Hello guys! I am currently owning a 2014 a3 sedan 1.8tfsi and i am thinking to convert all my mechanical parts to 2017 s3! Got one coming as donor car which was for parts due to be recovered from stolen! What are your opinions on that? Has anyone done that before? I also got the supersport seats as bonus

Before anyone tells me to sell mine, i already considered it but like the looks and i got it brand new with my spec!

So you're putting an S3 engine and parts into an A3? Sounds like a lot of hassle and just asking for issues. In my unqualified opinion.

Every mechanical part not just the engine! Ecus, engine, gearbox, haldex, brakes etc.

I think there was a thread on here a while ago on this same topic.
Sounds a hassle to me.

Yeah that's what I meant. Sounds like a complete hassle to me, and just asking for issues when driving. Don't want to be messing with electronics and other parts in my opinion. Safest option is to just use the S3.

S3 cant be used because it can be used only for parts. They sliced the cabin so it will not be driveable!
My mechanic is the best around and i believe he can get over any issues! The car will be reprogrammed by revo!

He might be "the best around" but I personally still wouldn't risk it. If you want an S3, buy an S3.

Bad idea imo, espically if you want to sell the car later on down the line. Just buy an S3 - The only people putting an S3 together should be Audi imo.

If your 1.8 isn’t a Quattro the rear suspension is different. Might be cheaper spending the money on tuning your 1.8. Massive turbo and a good map surely will give you 300bhp.

Already around 300hp with revo! And no, is not quattro!!

That is why i want the quattro parts ;)

If rear suspension is different then it will be subframe and everything out and changed.
That’s if it’s possible to swap. Not a job for the faint hearted, might need some cutting and grinding in bits and who’s to say it can be done. Then the electronics would be a nightmare to code and get right. Think gone are the days where you can drop something like a vr6 into a mk2 golf and all you need is engine, gearbox and ecu. Today’s electronics are a pain.
I would sell the 1.8 and break the s3 and sell all the bits, engines and gearbox will go for a fortune.
Then You should have enough to buy a used S3. You will also have less problems going down this route.

It'd be safer and better just buying an S3. Imagine the insurance cost...an A3 with everything modified? Servicing etc. No end of issues.

The boot is a few inches deeper in the FWD compared to the quattro. Is the bodyshell different?

Most likely the boot floor is welded at different points so to accommodate the Quattro gubbins.
That’s what I was saying earlier there’s gonna be a lot of cutting and grinding to get it all in then a lot of pain to get it to work.

Hi.
If you needed any help with insurance at all for this type of conversion then please feel free to drop me a line.
Regards,
Dan.

Honestly, you are wasting your time. It might seem like a good and a fun project but it will go on forever, there will be a bucket load of issues. As others have said you would be better just breaking it for parts.

My old ford focus diesel (fwd, remapped to 165bhp / 300lbs foot) would spin the wheels up in 4th gear in the wet. A fwd car with 500bhp and not many less lbs foot would be totally undriveable. 4wd would be a must and to do that would be an awful lot of hassle to rework the chassis and shell to mount the 4wd system.

Mate. Its a crazy idea. Just buy a new s3.

I'd expect the cost to retrofit all those parts would exceed teh extra you'd need to just buy an S3 over the value you'd get for the scrapped S3 as parts.

The cost to do the swap is 6000euros. Completed.
I have also done my research and it apperas that all chassis are prepares for quattro. If you dont go for quattro, they just fit your car for fwd. it is cheaper for them than to create a new platform. So it appears that structure wise A3/S3/RS3 are the same!
I also spoke with a guy in poland who had an A4 2.0 fwd diesel and switched the mechanical parts with an 4.2 v8 s5! And was just plug and play as he said!

The Quattro cars have a shallower boot so that means the boot floor is in a different position.
The a4/a6 are all the same boot whatever you get so will be more plug and play and significantly bigger. On the a3 it needs to appeal to a wider market so boot space is more critical even an extra 10litres to maximise boot space. Most a3 are non Quattro so they can sell them with bigger boots by moving the boot floor lower and changing the suspension a bit to accommodate.

Check out this site. They did a Scirocco R conversion to 4wd from a Golf R. So it can be done, but it is a lot of cutting and welding, and those guys did not change the engine. Only added rear wheel drive and changed the ECU.

I'm sure that the value of your current 1.8 + 6000 euros + break value of all those parts will be more than enough to pay for a nice spec 2014 S3. But good luck if decide to go for it.
I know from experience that breaking a car is a lot of work but you would be surprised how much it all adds up to. A car that I could have sold for maybe £3000 (with a cracked engine block) I got back just over £6500 by breaking it.

I’ve done this on 8v and 8p, no big problems, as long as you’ve got other car, yes it’s hassle but if you want to do this, then it’s worth it, it’s ok saying sell your car and buy a gen s3, some people can’t afford to do this, it’s a fair job better doing it yourself as garage will charge a lot, if you do it your self, it’s only your time, how much is cat b car

Just a thought, if your changing so much, which it seems you will be, don’t this have to go through further checks and intimately be classed as a Q reg car?
If he's UK based , which based on the cost in euros I'd assume not. Although the country they're from may have similar rules.

Ah yes didn't register that part. What a waste of money anyway, each to their own, and I guess if you already have a damaged S3 then it could be a cool project, but surely in the back of your mind, your conscience will be saying " christ, I could have bought 911 997 for the same amount of money" and that's an appreciating asset. If not that then an old Elise etc etc.... Your A3 will be worth around 5 euros once you are finished and thats if you find someone to buy it, which you won't as most people wont touch modified cars.... Just my opinion, sorry for being harsh.

If you have already decided that it can be done and you’ve got a cost why ask the forum if it can be done

Bump!

Just came across this thread whilst searching for something else - just wondered how you got on with the conversion? would be nice to see some photos etc.
