Hi, I've just bought a 2010 S5 sportback 3.0t. it's happened just once where it over heated but it's been fine since. When it over heated I wasn't far from home so drove back with heaters on full and the temp stayed at 90. I thint it's a common problem that the thermostat sticks. It's booked in to Audi specialist in 2 weeks, should I for peace of mind get the waterpump and thermostat replaced? If it stuck once it will probably happen again. Does anyone know if there is a revised thermostat? Do you think it's thermostat or something different?
Any help would be great.
Thanks Kev

I read on here very recently, on our particular engine the thermostats get stuck shut, whereas on every other car i have had (3 of which had thermostats get stuck) they got stuck open. strange.
How overheated did it get? hopefully not too much that it caused any long term damage

Problem fixed now, changed thermostat and water pump at the same time. The temp did shoot up but for about 2 minutes until I could pull over so no long term damage thank goodness.
The new thermostat I was told is a revised item so hopefully shouldn't happen again. Thanks for the input

I don’t even think the thermostat was that bad. Check my recent post on the A7 section “3.0tfsi coolant failure”
