Replacement Tyres

Looking like I need to change my front tyres after 11.5 months ownership and only 7k miles.
The car (S4 Avant) came with the Pirelli P Zero 245/35/ZR19 93.

Thinking the Michelin Pilot Sports sound good.

Also possibly looking at Nitrogen inflation to try and help extend durability/life in this set.

I think that the P Zero, at least Rossos are not the best tyre for down and out mileage, my 2011 S4 came with them on and I replaced them at 20K with the same as I found them okay, found them at a good price and don't do big mileages in the S4. For our higher mileage car I will get Michelins when the time comes, I always had done for the past almost 20 years, but just one issue, using Michelin summer use tyres in winter, in Northern areas is not the best plan, for winter use I have Michelin Alpins on the day to day car, and Pilot Alpins on 18" alloys for winter on my S4.

Don't think they are available for the S4 tyre size

Personally, I don't think that performance heavy cars should end up with all seasons tyres, they are aimed more at medium powered medium weight cars where they can give benefit though not as useful as using Summer tyres in Summer and Winter tyres in Winter.

After 20,000 miles just changed from Hankooks to Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (18 inch ) . Car seems to be more seated and less lighter which for me is a good thing. Can't hear any difference in noise. The only small negative is that the rim protection doesn't appear to be as pronounced as the Hankooks. Overall i am pleased and if they last the same in terms of mileage then i'll stick with the Michelins

Anyone replaced the 19in Hankooks with Hankooks yet? This is what I'm wanting to do, soon too, at 34k miles now on the original set, very happy with them so want the same. I'm reading that they are a special Audi fit and that if I go with non-Audi version, they don't have the rim protection?

34k miles?! That's pretty good going I'd say. Haha. Don't know about the Audi special fit though I'm afraid...

I've now got 20K and they're 4mm all round, so I'll be doing mine sooner rather than later and I'll be going with the Hankooks as I've found them to be a good tyre.

Interesting about the rim protection...

I don't know if my fronts will last as long, being front wheel drive and mostly urban and now with a tuning box I wouldn't expect them too. Having said that I am not noticing any increase of wheel spin since fitting the TCU tune..

The code for the 19in Hankooks with good rim protection is RO1. They are Audi RS specific apparently. Non Audi spec do indeed have NO rim protection.

I’m changing from the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 2 to Michelin Primacy 4s. Mine are 225/50R17Y 94.

Could have gone for the Primacy 3 AO fitment but thought I’d try the new compound. Primacy 3s are getting quite old now.

My S4 Avant came ex-factory with RO1 Hankooks.
Why aren't I surprised at this!! ;-) .....a S4 picked up from Audi AG and Hankooks are the official tyre for the DTM.
RO1's appear to be unavailable in this part of the world, so off the menu.

As I posted elsewhere, I did an Audi-Sport track & training day (slalom, skidpan & trackwork) 2 days ago. What I didn't say was that not impressed at all with the OEM P Zeros. They have done 19k & have still good tread, except for the front insides, which I initially put down to an unprofessional wheel alignment when the Eibach springs were installed. Now not so sure. Had another w/align done from a trusted shop & front tyres to the back.
Methinks a Xmas present to self of 4 x Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

Be good to get input - just got a nail in my tyre that Can't be repaired. Car done 10k tyres are continental and have 6mm on. Do I just replace the one rear or both rears?
I have checked black circles - anyone have any other sites that might be cheaper?

These the Conti's everyone else got on there's?

I haven’t found cheaper than Blackcircles for my Michelin’s. My local independent matched the price, they are a fitter for Blackcircles. Ended up going direct to them.

If it was me I’d just replace the one especially as you have loads of life left. Providing you can match the tire exactly.

My A4 came with the RO1 coded Hankooks and am pretty sure the Audi dealer said they could supply replacements but would have to order in.

Thank for that. Yes, we do have them in Oz, but I was enquiring here about RO1. My bad. I note initial reviews on this tyre are 3/2012.

Comparatively, PS4S are 2016 technology for improved wet & dry capabilities. I note a number of owner reviews, particularly of 4WD/AWD vehicles, that comment on the markedly improved turn-in. I think the instructor with me on the skidpan at the training day was genuinely surprised at the amount of understeer. Yes, I'm trying to justify this yearn to open the wallet, again!

"I love them, btw." The myriad of selection. Each to their own. =-)

On having my car serviced the front tyres are down to 2.6mm front left and 3.4 front right, so not long now before I will have to replace them. The left one is the wheel I can easily spin, and do so occasionlly in the wet, up at a certain junction. Only do around 450 miles a month so I will have them done before the winter trip to our holiday lodge.
Blackcircles seem to competitive with the Pilot Sport 4's. But then I would be mixing diferent tyres front from the rears, I guess not so much of a big deal with front wheel drive.

Both those listings are AO, not RO1. AO do have the rim protector but it is smaller. I think that's the only difference though. A colleague has both flavours on his Avant.

Ring Hankook themselves. A Sales Rep will tell you where to get them, as opposed to an Audi stealer.

I was under the impression that the service department would price match and one time I was in getting a quote on some accessories I watched one of the technicians preparing a wheel for a tyre change and applying tape all around the rim of the wheel to stop it getting scratched by the tyre lever. I've never seen anywhere else take that sort of care so I was pretty impressed with that. Most places seem happy to bounce the ugga dugga wrench all over the wheel.

Tyre levers should not be used, so no tape will be required, with profession tyre fitters using the correct equipment. Nothing should be touching the area of rim where the tyre makes contact...

Well, this pretty much matches how I've seen most tyres get changed and there looks to be plenty of potential for scratching from the tyre lever

Amature's, never take your car to any tyre shop that releases the bead with levers. A profession setup will have a machine that has special bead releasing tool by putting pressure on it from above...

The UK is different (OH! what a surprise!!!), but as an example of Audi's international policy, if one looks at the Audi sites for accessories, UK appears to say nothing, but US site says "Please select a dealer to view local pricing. Starting MSRP excludes taxes, installation, shipping, and dealer charges. Dealer sets actual price. Contact dealer for limited warranty, inventory level, and return policy details." Audi Aust site says *MSRP=manufacturer’s suggested retail price incl. GST. Prices from the partner can vary." These have been changed, because both used to clearly say "Prices can vary between Dealers".
In Oz, at least, dealers make little profit on new vehicle sales. Their profitability stems from Parts & Service $$s, hopefully from their new sales, at least.
Dealers will not simply price match another dealer, let alone with aftermarket companies, and find it difficult to believe the same ideology doesn't exist elsewhere.

As to the tape, no doubt the dealer would be adding the mechanic's time, and the cost of the tape into consumables, to load the price. Tyre dealers will take extra care(= time), if requested, but, of course, that adds to the cost. Also depends on the tyre dealers equipment. Most old equipment can not take off tyres with the deep rim protection. The dealer I went to had to send the alloy rim away for costly repair.

Costco have an offer on Michelin tyres for whatever reason the XL tyres 97Y are cheaper than the 93Y (which is the load rating on my car at the moment)
the 97Y is about £20 odd cheaper each tyre. i'm guessing the extra load has a tougher sidewall?

A certain Audi Dealership in the South West badly gouged/scratched my 18 month old front N/S wheel. I’ve got the 19” titanium V Spoke, like so many owners on this group.

I was devastated after going there to ‘safeguard’ my wheels.

Luckily I filmed every wheel (OCD I know) before fitting and showered the garage tech this. They had zero come back and took an identical alloy off a demonstrator and put it straight onto my car, almost quibble free.

not sure whether to use my audi dealer or ATS as my audi dealer are only £5 extra per tyre
maybe try negotiating with them see if they will match or reduce it by £10?

They will be slightly heavier but will give better handling in corners as it’ll keep its shape better.

Just to revive this thread, my car is booked in to have two new front tyres this week. Having the same Hankooks as I do not wish to mix front to rears and to keep the car original as possible. Cheapest place happened to be Kwik-Fit as they were over £7 per tyre cheaper than Blackcircles, plus I get a alignment check free. I will pop in and speak to them first though

Thanks, with mytyres they only list two fitting stations and I wouldn't use either. Pmeus don't have any near enough. Kwik-Fit have the Hunter Hawkeye four wheel alignment equipment at my branch, which is on my way home. I don't know much about this system http://www.hunter.com/alignment-systems/hawkeye and how accurate the system is but I'll give it a go.
I am also well aware of Kwik-Fit's reputation, but, like Audi dealerships, there is always good and bad ones.
I have dealt with upselling tatics before...
