2014 A3 8V Bluetooth music

Hi all, I have an A3 8V does not have the upgraded speakers but has the sub etc so think Audi plus system but not sure.
I can play my music from the phone through the Bluetooth system but I am wondering do you have to have it running in your phone before it will play through Bluetooth?
I have had the app running in the background and when connected will show the track but won't play, I need to play it on the phone first then it's fine. But sort of defeats the purpose of hands free.

Also what year was it you can mirror onto the mmi screen for apps etc?

As I recall it depends on your phone. If its an iPhone then I think it integrates fairly well, i.e. you can play / find tracks using the *** controls and its displayed all nicely on the screen. If its a samsung then I think you have to actually play it from the phone, or, the MMI play button will only kick off the last thing you were listening to on the phone. I would assume the same is true for all phones other than Apple (might be wrong).
Ive got a samsung and I agree that it defeats the object and is a clunky solution. IMO the audio quality isnt great via bluetooth anyway so I never bother with it. The kids use it when they get in the car and want to listen to their music (they both have iPhones).
For my listening pleasure I just copy anything I want to an SD card and play from that. The sound quality is a lot better and a tonne of music can fit onto the 32Gb card I bought. Fortunately my works laptop has an SDcard reader / writer for managing the music.

Using android, like Spotify so can play different playlists etc.
What about the Audi mmi connection, I have one of them to usb never really used it yet though not sure if it was just for stored music on the phone which I don't have.

Not sure as I havent tried the mmi. I too have a lead but only use it for charging the phone. I cant remember exactly what the sales guy said about it, although I think I was underwhelmed so didn't take it in.

I also just prefer using an sd card. Very convenient - does all you want.
Actually, I have wondered about all the folks streaming their music. What happens when you lose mobile signal x presumably your music stops.

I download my spotify playlists so they play offline so that's not an issue if signal lost.
May try the SD card but I must admit the sound quality seems good over Bluetooth.

Think from 2017 the A3/S3 supported Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. I find the volume and quality much better through Spotify on Android Auto then just the straight up Bluetooth. Max volume on just Bluetooth is equivalent to like 35% volume when on Android Auto.
