CMWheels RS5 Alloys on RS3 and TPMS?

These look great - someone on the VWROC asked about these.

Any thoughts on quality and how I would get them to work with TPMS as for £350 I wouldn’t mind them!

Does your car have tpms - I believe from other posts that some did not have it as standard. If yes, then just fit a thingymajig sender in each wheel - either new or taken from your existing wheels - and away you go.

Your first question on quality. I have no direct experience with these wheels, but (my opinion) if they are discounted to that price for the set, and someone is still making a profit on them, I cannot see quality being that great. I'd certainly be expecting to pay £350 for an individual wheel, but if you take it carefully with no hard cornering I guess you will be fine.

They look as if they will fit over the front calipers, but maybe ask first because at an offset of 35, there is not much more room to play with spacers.

A lot of people on the s3 and golf R forum/fb page/mqb owners fb page swear by CM wheels. Some go as far to say the replica Pretoria alloys that they do are stronger and less prone to buckling than the OEM wheels, albeit heavier than oem as they aren’t flow formed, they’re all cast

Can't comment on the quality of the wheels, but I thought that the TPMS uses the ABS system on the RS3. I've just switched to aftermarket wheels and TPMS seems to works ok without swapping over any kit from my old wheels.

They do use ABS, but if you have the advanced tyre pressure system then you get live pressures / temperatures on the dash from sensors in the wheels.

If you have passive TPMS then you can change to any wheels without issue as the system uses rolling circumference to calculate the speed of the wheels to work out if there is any pressure loss. A tyre with less air inside will spin faster.

If you have the active TPMS, with the option to display actual pressures and temperatures, then you have sensors within your air valves assembly. You would need to move these valves on to your new wheels or, as most people do, buy a 2nd set to install.

I run these LDPrestige wheels during the winter.

They are fine and last winter whilst on our way back from a Wales holiday I hit a pothole on them, to say the impact felt like the car had been damaged let alone the alloy, was an understatement

I was fully expecting the tyre wheel to be shot, however everything was fine no flat tyre/damage etc.

Upon arriving home I removed the front wheel to inspect it and nothing, no damage at all.

Audi oem Rotors though, there seemed to be a time they would buckle by just showing them a pothole

I want to change my alloys - or get them redone to look like the diamond cut alloys but I don’t want to be without my car for 2 days.

And I quite like the RS5 wheels - if they fit then it seems like a good solution.

My TPMS is active - with the temps and pressure for each wheel - where do I get a second set of sensors and how much? How easy are they to fit?
I assume that if I purchased these wheels then went to a tyre place/ or wheel repair to do my existing alloys they could swap the tyres over?

A good tyre place will be able to swap your rubber and fit the sensors.

I think the question is - would you chose to be without your car if you had the option? Also do you trust some wheel company with your car for 2 days?

Will these CM wheels fit? There is no mention of the width of the wheel? 235 is the standard rear and front RS3 size assuming not a staggered set up right?

Decent wheel places have loan wheel sets to borrow. 2 days without the car to basically a new set of wheels seems like a no brainer to me!

RS5 wheels will be wider all around. Look up an RS5 spec to find out.

I spoke to the guys at CM wheels - they said it will fit but stick out a bit more - same with the Pretoria replicas. 15mm on the RS5 and 10mm on the Prets.

He said the TPMS sensor is in the valve and the tyre place can swap them - takes about 10 minutes. I just need to check how much a local tyre place will charge to move the rubber over and sensors.

What you say about spare wheels sounds logical - but can’t find anywhere in London or Brighton that does. If someone knows a place that can diamond cut my existing wheels and provide temp alloys please let me know!

You shouldn’t be paying much more than £10 a tyre to switch them over. It’s standard practice to change a valve with new tyres, this valve is no different to fit.

Posh Wash don’t offer it do they?

The Audi OEM TPMS sensors are not a straightforward fit on some aftermarket alloys, they could need either an extra rubber washer inside to ‘seal’ them to the thinner aftermarket valve hole or a different TPMS sensor that’s compatible with thinner alloy wheels.

I know someone who has 19” S3 blade wheels who went to have the OEM sensors fitted and the tyre place couldn’t get them to seal properly because the Audi S3 alloy was slightly thinner around the valve hole.
