So I was thinking as I cycling (I know I hate cyclists too lol) the other day and started to compile a list of cars that you see regularly on British roads which will be faster than an a6 bitdi. and I struggled to think of many.

My bosses wife has a BMW 240i and is slighly faster 0-60 and has 335bhp.
I know BMW 335 wont get close but what else do you think will be quicker?

I think all hot hatches will be embarrassed by the Bitdi with exception of the Golf R
Latest Civic type r looks fast

You need to look at power to weight too. The A6 is not a lean machine. If you go by the gross weight on your V5 I think you you'll be surprised at just how poor the power-to-weight-ratio is.....!

http://www.launchtech.co.uk/bhp-calculator/

I put mine in at 300bhp and 2400kg (I think its around that on the V5) and I get a whopping 125bhp per tonne!!

My single turbo 3.0 with approx 300bhp can out run a Mk2 TTS (265bhp) but not a MK3 TTS (296?)

Obviously you're running far more torque but then you need to in order to overcome the mass!

Choose your victims wisely lol

Once dusted my boss in his Golf GTI performance pack (manual though so he didnt have launch control!)

Gotta have to say a 335d on paper looks to be a couple of 10ths quicker. . .

yeah I just looked at the 335 again and looks like 5.1 to 60

Stage 1 S7 :racer:

I was kind of meaning normal everyday cars like c and e class mercs or BMW's. Cars before you get to the s cars level.
Hot hatches so fast saloons. I think the bitdi is a fantastic all round package and it looks like any other A6 so when a young hoon in a Corsa vxr tries to be Lewis Hamilton he gets embarrassed lol

Lad a work just bought a JCW mini s and was surprised that I was quicker than him for instance. Any lad has an older tyre r and thinks his car will be faster!

How can you say a Honda Type R and Corsa VXR are normal everyday cars and the S7 isn’t? All three are fast versions of the standard model.

To answer your question, there are a lot of cars on the road that as fast or faster than 5.1secs to 62 and similar speeds to the BiTdi when rolling. It’s certainly a fast diesel but it doesn’t have the segment all to itself.

Because an s7 costs £50-60k and a vxr or type r around £20-25 so they are hardly in the same league. Yes they are fast versions of the standard car but I see far more of the latter 2 than I see any of the s Audi cars.

I just thought it would be fun to see what people think might be quicker than a bitdi with it being the quickest a6

Thing is, even though it's quick & big the A6 BiTDI is & was ****** expensive. Think mine was circa £50k+from new, but not to me fortunately! So really you do have to compare it to similarly priced offerings from the other marques - not the cheaper hot hatches.

Plus, it's not really a sprinter. More an 800m runner. Quite frankly no car as comfortable, practical & yes, heavy, should be able to tear up the road from a standing start like it does (god bless quatro & oodles of torque) whilst returning 40mpg combined. But on a (private)motorway, stick it into sport, short shift it down & floor it. Not much will live with you. And they'll definitely be running on fumes long before you.

It's a great car, proper sleeper, but don't be too disappointed if the odd Boy Racer does you off the lights. Remember the wine in the boot will only crush the truffles if you give it too much welly - he only has to worry about a few discarded cans of redbull :)

Also, the 335 is definitely faster. I drove several in my car hunt before I settled on the BiTDI.

It's much more of a drivers car - lighter, more nimble & brutally fast when pushed. Similar power plant. ****** loved it. (Which was a surprise as I've always loathed BMW's for some reason)

However you'd be lucky to get much more than a gym bag in the boot of the 3 series - let alone 2 dogs & the paraphernalia that a family of 4 require. Life is compromise. Hence the big A6 won out. But on practicality, not speed.

The a6 bitdi is a all rounder for sure. I'm happy with it as a replacement for my 2002 s3 of 13 years.

For a bit more speed I have a manual scirocco type r. The wife's run about. I used to think it was slower but it not. By quite a bit.

I love my bitdi and have played with selling up and getting an S6 instead as I don’t do the miles. But I ended up buying a kitcar instead and kept the a6!

Not to sure many boy racers would really be concerned when an oil burning barge smokes them. They will just shrug it off and look for someone else to bug. I'd guess if I were in your shoes and didn't 'win' then I'd be more embarrassed out of the 2.

Use the oomph for overtaking not racing :racer: It's an executive saloon all said and done.

I’ve tried to look into some of the 0-62 times online, as I was curious about this too. Maybe if I changed how I searched for it, it would be easier, but the 0-62 websites I found are a nightmare to read, as they give you every variant of every model since the 20th century - there’s thousands of them.

It’s only a bit of fun, Next Car. If people weren’t interested in this subject, there would never be any S6, RS6, or sports cars sold except for track days. Each to their own, my friend.

Too true if thats what people want then go for it. It's just an opinion, since this is a forum for that sort of thing.

Suffice to say stg3 on the BITDI definitely requires the RS6 caliper upgrade and I have had few good road races. Not as fast as my R8 but I still love my BITDI - a lot ;-) 0-60 mph I have times for but im no longer posting them up here as everyone thinks I was making them up and they were impossible. So sad to see this engine frame dropped from the C8 and not augmented & introduced with the electric turbo as in the RS5 TDI concept Audi developed.

On a good day sub 4.0 secs is achievable on a STG 3 - que the flame war.

That would be frightening and awesome in equal measure. No way my missis would sign off on me doing the work necessary to achieve that sort of speed :frown new:.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if the 0-62 on the standard BiTDI was less than the manufacturer’s quoted 5.2 seconds anyway. When I had my A6 C6 remapped when the car was 6 or 7 years old, it was 150bhp before being mapped. The car was only supposed to be 140bhp from new.

My 3.0 supercharged A6 C6 hits 60 in a measured 4.4 and I was disappointed that it wasn't quicker, then I found out that the RS6 did it 4.7. That put the smile back.
It is stage 1+.
Next car will be the c7 s6.

I think I'm qualified to answer this having ran my BiTdi for a good few years with over stock power and I have a couple of hatchbacks in the form of a mk2 Golf GTI 16v and an 8L S3.

First of all, I think the numbers on paper doesn't really translate as well to 'real world' driving, and anyone purchasing an A6 isn't really going to 'race' a hot hatch anytime soon, it really isn't that type of a machine. My A6 does 0-60 in around 4.9s, but you can only get this time with the gearbox in dynamic mode, ESP off and a hard launch with your left foot on the brake! So in the 'real' world, you're not going to achieve 4.9s on the ball unfortunately. Then once you are upto speed, I reckon 95% of hothatches will be right up your **** along a twisty road... as you will be holding them up! lol

So to answer the question of what is faster than a BiTdi? In a straight line, nothing much if it's anticipated, but throw in a few corners, you might aswell just chill out, and enjoy it for what it is, a cruiser with huge overtaking ability.

Depends how you define "quicker"?

It's got a lot of torque and reasonable power, but there's a lot lost through the drivetrain and it's a big heavy car, so don't expect too much and stick to your strengths*: big open roads, gently sweeping high-speed corners, etc. I'd expand on @Rhyso 's comment "choose your victims wisely".... I'd say "choose your victims carefully!"....

What are you after for comparison?

Total bhp?

BHP/ton?

0-62mph?

Mid range acceleration? (e.g. 50-90mph)

Top speed?

Around a track?

The BiTDI's main strength is within-gear acceleration and then also after that, there's the quattro drivetrain, but it shares that with any other Audi A4 upwards...

As @Roadrunner146 mentioned: The most immediate competitor would be a tweaked/remapped A6 TFSI (3.0 supercharged)... it's got levels of torque comparable to regular single turbo 3.0TDI , but N/A level of throttle response and pulls to ~7000rpm, so you're looking at ~400-450whp with a pulley change (£500) + remap (£300-£500)... plus it is lighter than a BiTDI, so even a mildly fettled one like mine would be a fair bit quicker: despite less torque, I've got ~100whp more already... and in a lighter car... 0-62's usually around the mid-4's with a just the remap and at least the low 4's with a pulley+remap. Best I've heard of was a pulley, exhaust and extensive custom remap getting a dyno-confirmed 490whp, which I believe equated to a 0-62mph in ~3.7sec, although I don't know if that was ever tested with timing gear, but that sounds easily viable given that it's sitting between a S6 and RS6 in terms of power (420PS / 560PS, so probably 350whp / 450whp ballpark?)

In terms of top-speed - you'd need to stick mostly to remapped and de-restricted cars: an A6 TFSI will get ~175mph-190mph with most pulley + remap setups... probably more for my friend's one with the custom remap.

*All that said, the other cars I tinker with are WAY fast than any A6 (or RS6!) around a tight track: something like a turbo-charged MR2 Spyder is 210-240whp and weighs <900kg wet (in track spec) and it leaves people gob-smacked when feel them go around corners... once you put decent tyres and suspension on them, you need specialised baffled oil sumps otherwise the lateral G's mean the oil can't get to the bottom of the sump to be drained... but I wouldn't want to drive one at a high-end A6 cruising speed! Like I said - let each car stick to their strengths :)

I was comparing to other big executive estate/saloons and fast hatchbacks. Like the kind of knobheads who get up your **** on the motorway in their focus st or polo gti and then u just downshift and say bye bye to them.

Lol. Careful with the name calling mind. Alot of the knob heads i come across drive audis and mercs. Not so many bmw's though.

There's lots out there that would show a BiTDI a clean pair of heels especially if the BiTDI didn't have time to shift down and spool up, etc: it's less laggy than a single turbo TDI, but no match for a DSG + supercharged petrol. so in terms of what is faster: I'd start with a mildly remapped A6 TFSI, but there's plenty else out there - such as a 540i, E55 (or higher) AMG, etc... but the BiTDI would stand more of a chance as those are also ZF auto's and also turbo-charged. The one thing that a BiTDI has in it's favour is that it would probably do it with the least drama (revs)...

On an almost related note, I’d love to know what the top speed of the 3.0 BiTDI would be without the limited. Couldn’t find it after a Google search. Sometimes car reviews tell you this, but I guess only when the manufacturer reveals it, which maybe they haven’t in this case.
