Facelift New style interior

Experienced the new A8L interior yesterday.. looks fab, very luxurious.. but all that glossy black touch screen for everything nonsense.. the finger prints literally everywhere looked hideous.. really hope they tone it down on lower model cars!

I'll give them this - it looks modern. But it's horrible for people with a slight OCD like me, especially because I use hand cream (dry skin).

On the upside, I'll never have the money to buy it so I'm not really bothered. :shrug:

You get a microfibre cloth with the car to clean the dirty paw prints on the screens

Yeh me either but the concern is that style filtering down to A3 level cars!!

It is definitely filtering down, the new A1 even has touch screens.

I was in a friends 18 plate golf yesterday and to be fair the system in that worked really well and didn’t look to be overly distracting but the screen was covered in finger prints.

Massive screens and Huge Ipads stuck to dashboards seem to be the car manufacturers interior choice for cars these days. The stupid pads stuck to the dash on the new A-Class just look ridiculous

Like you say, grubby finger prints will show up on everything. But they're pandering to the Yoof, and future car buyers. Why anyone wants to configure a car to within an inch of it's life is beyond me. It just means the car is not set-up to be the best it can be when it rolls out of the factory.

I would suspect once sunlight is beaming through the windows, these Pad will be hard to see. Plus, with everything no doubt within a sub-menu to change something, people will be taking their eyes off the road. Crash !!!!!
Must easier to move your hand to where you know the dial or button is, and keep your eyes on the road. But I'm just a Fossil, so what do I know?

Personally I can't see an issue with the screens and finger prints myself however what is of a concern is that manufacturers are using them to bypass the laws on the use of mobile phones. Sooner or later I can see all, or elements, of the touchscreens to be legislated and controlled so that they cannot be used whilst the vehicle has its engine running.
Sooner than later really..

It does make you wonder .. with all these "connected" services, being able to read the news etc... it is just as dangerous being able to use the MMI (or similar) to using a phone..
But then even keying in a sat nav destination could become dangerous if you aren't very proficient at it.

Not a huge fan of touch screens as car display units. Buttons work well, use android auto and voice commands when want to navigate somewhere, message someone. A lot easier and quicker than faffing about with a touch screen.

Must admit at first I really liked the new A-class with its high-tech interior thought it stood out, but then sat in one and honestly the standard screens aren't all that and I worry it will become so tacky and outdated in a few years (unless it becomes and industry standard of course). Not to mention what happens if it breaks....it all just seems like a big headache to me for what will be a short lived gimmick.
 
In terms of car design / build costs touch screens are far cheaper than buttons in that you can add endless functionality by simply adding lines of software code.

Physical buttons = costs as they have often have to be placed depending on whether LH or RH drive. The more variations there are per car the more sub component stock the manufacturer has to design / procure and hold in the supply chain.

Touch screens are here to stay unfortunately.
 
I'll say it, I like buttons. Nothing better than well damped button. You know where it is and pushing it is better than stabbing at a touchscreen whilst your eyes are off the road.

I realise this is the way things are going but I'm not a fan.

Best button ever for me was the headlight adjustment in the B7 A4. Lovely feel and the damping was quality.

(I think I'm getting old, sound like like my dad).

I'm 20. Give me a button in the car any day, like you said you know where everything is and don't need to take your eyes off the road.

Touchscreens finger prints not a issue what is a issue is having used my Mrs touchscreen in her car is, apart from the potential dangers involved by using it whilst driving are they ain't great for right handed people i struggle to hit smaller icons on the screen okay with the larger icons but delve into sub menus and your asking for trouble .. The only saving grace l see for car manufacturers is installing a more advanced voice command system which can cover most of the cars systems and functions

Absolutely agree, voice command would get rid of so much of the 'safety' issues I have with them, on a side note not too unrelated. An Audi dealer told me yesterday that the reason they are pushing these car SIMs with Audi carplay etc.. is because in the not to distant future all cars will be spec'd with them and all will have the same functionality i.e. heated seats which will be unlocked via the SIM. Much like you would have in your digital TV boxes when subscribing to channels etc...

All getting far too electric based for me.

To have the heated seat control within the IPad seams ****** crazy. Where it take about a second to stab a button, you'll have to, no doubt, go to car settings. Interior settings. Then scroll down till you get to heated seats. Then select to heat seats. a pain in the backside (which is yet to be warmed), but chances are you will not be moving at this point, as you may have just got into your cold car.

But 5 minutes later when you are probably moving, and your bum is getting to the point where it's gone from nice and warm, to `Christ I'm sweating my B0ll0x off`, you'll have to go through all the menu, and sub menus again to switch the damn things off again. Ridiculous !

Haha sorry my mistake, I think he was saying there would still be a button but it wouldn't work unless you unlocked the feature so to speak. Im skeptical of it even happening to be honest, I can just imagine loads of people driving around in chipped Audis haha...reminiscent of the old chipped sky boxes.

The more electrics packed into these cars, the more things there are to go wrong. Can't help but imagine the various issues that potentially could happen with an "iPad" controlling all the car features. Google assistant works beautifully, as Jassy said, that functionality for the whole car would be ideal.

But if they drop the dial and buttons what would they put in that space? It would look daft without anything. Hope they dont move the cup holders to in front of the arm rest like say in the A6. Not very comfortable with a bottle in and reaching there for a cup ain't natural.

As far as enabling the likes of heated seats over the internet. Nice idea but how many cars would get built with this in them which would never get paid for? Not very cost saving. Yeah they do it with sat nav but if you think of all the options that's a lot of kit.
 
Whilst I appreciate where car technology is going, I can't help but feel that it's going to get outdated very quickly and appear slow, especially at the rate technology is evolving. Also repairing a touchscreen unit would be a bit of a headache compared to just popping in a new button, etc.
 
This interior just blew me away never been in car with this kind of interior nor seen a car driving itself via the key fob very surreal to this with your own eyes

I like a dull interior without all those flashy lights as it’s distracting driving long distance in the dark.

Besides it was spectacular and the photos don't do it justice to be honest here's the car the interior belongs.. . Too or can you guess .. . Lol
 
What they didn’t mention in the pictures is there’s like £20k worth of options to make it look like that. Lighting pack, media pack, tech pack etc...

It comes with most of the options if not all of them and it's not a Audi A8 and some of the screens can be interfaced without touching them ie every screen in the Cockpit

Wow, that would be such a distraction whist driving. Few things though.

  • If you can turn them off, I'm sure you would (if it's distracting) but you're still left with a huge Ipad stuck to the dashboard glowing back at you
  • Some people, even if distracted will leave everything on as to show off. May cause road crashes.
  • All these lights glowing as you drive around, will make using your mobile while driving easier, as the police (at a glance) will just see a big Blue / Red glow coming down the road, and not see the separate glow from the iPhone etc.
  • What happens if all these VC / ipad screens fail? No speedo, so you can't actually see how fast you're driving.
  • At least with the current A3, if the screen is distracting you, you can send it back into the dashboard. All these big ipads don't, so you're stuck with it.
But, I guess as cars advance, it'll all become academic anyway. The new A-Class can scan the road, and will actually apply the brake and steer for you when it sees a corner coming. Autonomous here we come.

Two words for ya ... Dimmer switch
 
At a guess the new A3 interior will be very close to the new Q3 interior. An article in this weeks Auto Express shows a new A3 with the swirly paint scheme and in the article is says the new A3 will be available in the UK in 2020. I thought it was being released in Germany later this year and to other markets in 2019.
