This has just started happening to my A6. Any body else had this happen and if so can it be fixed without spending £££

Happened to mine after I'd had it a couple of weeks. Couldn't force it open (and didn't want to) but had to do something, as short of fuel a long way from home.
Took the trim off inside and found a pull cable which trips the latch - I think most cars with locking caps have a pull cable internally somewhere.
Solenoid switch had to be replaced. Obviously didn't cost me anything in the circs but I shouldn't think it's hard to change.

Have you tried a liberal dose of WD40

I've tried wd40 round the catch, which hasn't helped. It just seems that pushing the catch down when it's in the closed position doesn't cause it to release. I've also tried using the release cable that's behind the trim in the boot but that's not doing anything. I can live with it as I only refuel once a month and can see if the dealer will have a look when it goes in for it's service.

It's the fuel flap actuator. No amount of WD40 will fix it unfortunately... Part is only around £20 from Audi and takes about 20 minutes to replace...

Thanks, I think I've found the part number so I'll have a go at it myself.

It's tricky as you have to remove the interior of the flap surround! More fiddly than anything though...

It's not obvious how to remove it, I found a you tube clip of somone doing a passat, which looks similar and they punch through some holes with a flat head screwdriver. I see similar punch holes in the a6 but I'm a bit reluctant to do that.

Don't know if this helps you....

Sorry, took me a little while to find the section on removing the tank flap... Looks fairly simple. I think the general idea is that the replacement is actually done from outside the car, and not from the boot side.

This will be really helpful. Many thanks!

Just spotted it says to replace the tank flap unit as well.. I guess this is because I'll be punching holes in it to remove it... Why not just screw it in Audi???

Parts have arrived but I'm a little unsure how to the "lid for tank flap" off. It looks like it's clips holding it but I'd prefer not to just attack it with the screwdriver. Instructions for it say it's on page 85. Don't suppose you could help me with that page as well please? BTW Is this manual downloadable from somewhere? It looks rather useful.

Ok. It's done. Took me about 30 mins. I thought I was going to get away with using just my Swiss Army knife to do it but there are two screws that attach the actuator to the tank flap that need a star shaped screwdriver bit. Tricky bits were feeding the manual release cable through and popping out the actuators plug. I had to snap the plastic to do that.

Anyway big thank you RAF_S7 for the instructions.

Did you get the link l sent you?
If possible I'd also like to get the link posted for the removal of the fuel tank flap. I have the same issue with a stuck actuator and before I try and swap out the tank flap unit I want to make sure I know what I'm getting my self into. As mentioned previously what would be so wrong with Audi (and other manufacturers) using a few screws to hold it in place.

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately the link is no longer active - it was a link to an online copy of the A6/7 workshop manual.

John.

Thanks for coming back so prompty. Fingers crossed I don't break/scratch the flap getting it off

I had this on my A6 after a couple of months back, it's a 4yr old car, but under the Audi used warranty a VW group tech came out & changed it on the drive. Took him all of 5 mins.
Popped the tabs, exchanged the entire plastic housing Inc filler flap, bit of skullduggery with the colour coded fuel flap cover (didn't get to see this bit as I was making him a coffee - but it's bound to involve brittle plastic tabs etc..)

All in all seemed pretty straightforward - once you get over the thought of whacking a screwdriver into the side of your expensive Audi :)

This may help. Im not suggesting using quite such brute force, but it will give you an idea on whats required.

Its an A7, but the process is exactly the same. You only need to go inside to route the manual release cable.

I seem to recall that the flap can be unclipped and then slides off the housing so you can put it to one side.
