Brake lights

A quick question for you guys.
I was driving in traffic earlier and noticed the brake lights stay on when the auto handbrake is on and it doesn’t switch off till I pull away.

Is this the same in all a3/s3?
In the A6 the brake lights switches off as soon as I let go the pedal not when I pull away.
Any thoughts?

Normal for the auto handbrake on the A/S3.
If the handbrake symbol on the dash is green the brake lights are on, if it’s red the brake lights are off.
If you’re sitting at traffic lights with auto handbrake applied you can flick up the handbrake switch to activate full handbrake and the brake lights will turn off.

Strange how they program/configure these things differently between the cars. I can’t even think why they would do this.
Just not a fan of my brake lights burning someone’s retinas out.

This is the reason why I never use the auto brake feature, this is my second car to be fitted with it.
It can be very annoying for whoever is immediately behind if my brake lights are constantly lit while stopped at traffic lights etc.....especially at night when it is raining. It is exactly the same as sitting with your foot on the brake for minutes on end.
Of course if you don't care about anybody else but yourself it can genuinely be quite a useful feature.

I like the way the auto handbrake works. In an automatic it makes sense and works as should. I just don’t understand why it needs to keep the lights on till I take off. Audi didn’t think it was necessary for the A6 so why make it necessary for the a3.

It is very curious why brake lights are not illuminated when using the brake hold function on another model from the same manufacturer......are you 100% sure this is the case?
I first experienced Brake Hold on my previous car a current model Honda Civic, and the brake lights were illuminated for the duration of the stop.

Had 3 A6 c7 pre fl and facelifts. The brake lights went off as soon as your foot was off the pedal.
Very sure it was like that on all 3. I would have noticed if it wasn’t. Took me a couple of weeks to see it in the s3 and I did over 100k across the 3 of them.

The brake hold function is intended for use in stop/start traffic but if you’re concerned about people behind just flick the handbrake switch, no dramas.
If you sit long enough with auto hold enabled the car will switch over to full handbrake, takes quite a few minutes though.

It takes 10 minutes I believe....or if you take off your seatbelt/open the door.
Brake hold is a feature that's been designed along with others to make things idiot proof. Many people do not bother using the handbrake so here is a wonderful feature that does it for them. The thing now is that these same people will use it as a substitute for the handbrake not to compliment it, and they certainly wont be bothered about people behind them.

Think that’s my problem I do care about the person behind me as I curse and moan about people holding the foot brake at traffic lights and burning my eyeballs out and now it looks like I’m doing it even though I’m not.
Just don’t understand why audi does it differently between the models.

I’ve never been bothered by people in front of me with their brake lights on. Some people do seem to be quite sensitive to it as I’ve noticed a few people on here complain about it but not outside ASN.
I’m curious, is it possibly an age related thing?

As someone who gets fairly common severe headaches, if I'm driving home from somewhere in the dark and get stuck behind a car with brake lights on.. I would rather they turn them off if I have a bad headache

I'm somewhat considerable about turning mine off.. (I'm 24 btw...). One "use case" atleast..

It's never bothered me either and didn't even think about it being a problem until I read it on here but being behind someone with rear fog lights on when there's no fog really hurts my eyes. So I guess brake lights can be like that for some people.
