Poor MPG 1.4 auto Avant

So my cars done around 3000 miles now, 5 months old and I’m getting 275 miles out of a tank. I’m usually getting around 27mpg on a 30mile run. Highest I’ve seen is 40 on a 250 mile round trip. I drive in comfort to try and help and I’m certainly not ‘lead footed’.

My stop/start rarely comes on and when it does I can’t get my head around how it works. I could use the car heavily for 3 days and not see it come on once. I could not use the car for a week and it will put stop start on when I get to my first junction.

I thought I had cracked it the other day when I switched the air con off completely (always in a/c eco) as it seemed to work straight away.

I did get around to checking my tyre pressure the other day and they were 42psi front 40psi rear so I’ve corrected that. I also don’t drive with my windows open and my boots always empty.

I wasn’t expecting great figures just better than my 8 year old 330i I changed it in for, which coincidently also used to do 275 miles a tank.

What’s other owners getting to a tank?
 
I'm getting roughly 500 miles on a full tank on my 2.0 TFSI 190 auto, however I'm always filling it up with Tesco Momentum fuel. Have you tried premium unleaded fuel (Momentum or Shell V power)? I use 'Auto' setting in Drive Select and very rarely give it the beans which i'm sure helps with the MPG.
 
Manual, usually around 400 miles. Can be quite variable, 37 Mpg to 45 Mpg dependant on mix of driving. I think you should get yours checked.

What size of tank is in the 2.0?
 
For a 500 mile range I’d either be playing chicken with the red light or driving down a very big hill.

One thing to definitely check is that the climate control is sync'd up so that the rear isn't a different temperature from the front. I had this for a while and couldn't figure out why the stop start wasn't working and noticed lower mpg. Once it was all sync'd up there wasn't a problem and mpg improved. :)

You get about the same out of a tank as I do in my S4! I notice a significant increase in economy by putting the car in efficiency mode though (15-20%), so it would be worth trying that on your next long run to see if it makes a difference. You just have to put up with the more sluggish throttle response is the downside.

Nope, I really do get ~ 500 miles to the full tank. Like I said I don't drive around like a boy racer and its mostly a mixture of A/B roads and city centre driving.

Out of interest, at what point do you re-fuel? When the warning light comes on or before that?
 
That doesn't seem right for the 1.4, I get better than that in a 2.0TFSI quattro. Unless you live in a particularly hilly area or you have the gearbox in S all the time I'm not sure how you are using so much. Have you checked what the "top consumers" are in your DIS?
 
Another thing to keep in mind is the car has only got 3k miles on the clock. It’ll get better and loosen up. You’re also driving a less powerful car than you used to have and possibly revving it out further. Smaller doesn’t always mean better economy. You also haven’t mentioned what type of traffic you drive in which will dent the mpg in your Avant. It’s also interesting that Audi have decided to drop the 1.4 for the 2.0 engine with the new emissions legislation on the B9

MPG should not be judged by how much you get from a tank unless the cars are exactly the same and driven in the same manner on the same journey. Unless I am mistaken the fuel tanks are a different size and on the BMW it is 60 litres for a start.

As far as the issue of mpg is concerned, if other owners of the exact same model and engine have varying experiences then this can usually be put down to the different driving conditions and the manner in which the car is driven...

I always fill up (completely) when the gauge is in the red and range is down to roughly 50 miles - that way I know my car will mostly be using fresh fuel once I fill up.

On my 2005 B7 2.0 TDI (140 PS) I often used to get nearly 800 miles to a tank of fuel. That was using Shell V Power diesel and again, not driving like a ****. Though that car was remapped by Shark Performance so I'm pretty sure that played a huge part in the impressive fuel economy.

Yeah the 2.0 TFSI (190) is an impressive & slick engine, I especially love the low hum it emits when cruising at a constant speed. However coming from a diesel I do miss the extra torque you get on the diesels but you get used to it after a while. Best of all, no more smelly hands when filling up!! lol

Don't think I've noticed any rattles from my engine or vibration just silky smooth v6..when I tested the 2.0 190 tdi I also found that smooth :) I have had plenty of rattles from trim in the past tho

I have driven the 190 tdi for a week with a manual gearbox and compared to my own A4 the diesel rattle and a vibration through the controls was very apparent. Can't speak for the v6 though.
In my time I have driven many petrol and diesel angined cars but I would never go back to a diesel again...
 
Range displayed after completely filling up my 2.0 TFSI (190) today with Tesco Momentum unleaded....and yes i do actually get that in real life (more or less):

Here 1.4 avant manual user.
I am getting 30-35 mpg city driving and 50-55 mpg on motorway at 70 mph.
Today i just cruise at 56mph for 25 miles on m25 and got 80.7 mpg:footy: I m very happy with the engine.

Mine just hit 5k today and overall my long term average is 42.2. I drove to Aberdeen yesterday and the average for the trip was 48.7mpg. Do find driving in town it will dip a fair bit though. Climate Control on auto and the stop start kicks in very frequently. Overall really pleased with the car it is so quiet and refined on a long journey. Glad I added the driver assistance pack - the adaptive cruise and traffic jam assist is just brilliant. My only worry is that I forget I don't have it when I'm driving my defender.
 
35.4mpg over 3k miles. 1.4 manual, mixture of short 3-10 Mike inner London runs, and long motorway journeys at about 75-80.

I have the same concerns although I do understand driving conditions and style play a big part in this. From filling up on the red with a range of 50 my car takes approx 52litres of fuel and shows a range of 475miles. My commute to work is only short: approx 3miles each way and I get 28/29mpg. However, my car just about makes it to 300miles before it’s on the red again. I’m not heavy on the pedal. Automatic and driven in Auto mode. 1.4
 
I have been very pleased with my A4 2.0 TFSI (190) Automatic S Line saloon, with extra urban driving average of 44 - 46 mpg, and maximum economy up to 53 mpg on longer motorway or cruising type journeys. I use Super unleaded (Tesco Momentum), Auto Mode Drive Select and Eco Air Con mostly. My driving style is mainly conservative with ocaisional moments of flair and excitement. I have only completed 4K miles in 12 months, but I am really pleased with what seems to be an improving fuel economy over that time, good engine power and very satisfying overall performance.
 
I've got the same (1.4 S-Tronic), but saloon, so a little lighter. I average about 42mpg over a full tank. Auto seems to give better economy than Comfort, but I've even found that Dynamic gives better mpg than Auto (as fair comparisons as I can do, e.g. full tank in each mode, usual commuting, etc. nothing wildly different).

Individual mode for me (Dynamic engine/box, Comfort Suspension, and Dynamic steering).

Interesting I haven’t tested Dynamic engine mode on drive Select for economy purposes, as have found Auto mode very economical, so will try it now on Dynamic on my 2.0 TFSI.
 
I’ve done around 3500 miles in my saloon, a bit lighter, from new all in auto and use standard petrol. Normally just me in the car. My long term average on the computer is 38.2 and it’s not shifted in the last two weeks. Around town, urban, hilly/incline I get low 30s. On dual carriage way/ motorway between 75 and 80mph get low 40s. I can get near 50s down hill with few revs. Drive the same as I did in my 2.0d blue tec merc where my long term average was 49.5 over 37000 miles. I’m fine with what I’m getting mpg wise, it might improve slightly.

By way of comparison I've the Avant 2.0 TFSI 190 auto and my average is 29.8 MPG after nearly 13K miles. I do a lot of very short local journeys and slow moving/stationary journeys in rush hour along with occasional motorway journeys around Ireland (which are generally nice and quiet) so I'd be in cruise control at the 120 km per hour speed limit for most of the drive. Most i've ever got out of the tank was just under 400 miles so don't think i'd ever get anywhere near 500 doing the sort of driving I do....

My previous A3 Saloon 1.4 TFSI auto averaged 33.9 MPG over roughly the same distance so the 2.0 Avant seems about right I guess given the size and engine difference.

39.8 long term average over first 5k miles - mainly 25 miles commute, A/B roads with a bit of town/village driving. If I can be bothered I get 45mpg.

250 miles trip last week yielded 49mpg at 75/80 mph cruise (private road only of course).

Very impressed - that kills of 4-pot diesels totally for me.

I've just recently change from a 2016 A4 B9 Avant 1.4 Sport to a 2018 A4 B9 Avant 1.4 BE, both manual. The way the car drives, and the fuel economy, are both quite different, even though it's the same engine.

First 1k in new car I'm long term averaging approx 36.5, made up mainly of a 14 mile town commuting a day. This morning I got 37.9 for the 7 miles in town. The 2016 was normally in high 20s during the commute, only occasionally hitting low 30s, and that was after 15k miles on the car.

Also have noticed that the below 1500rpm dead spot is nowhere near as bad in the new car as it was in the old. Still wouldn't want to be caught in it when trying to pull out, but there's at least something there compared to the old one.

Definitely feels like they've made changes to the engine over last couple of years.

Interesting. I assumed that at some stage the 1.4 would be replaced with the 1.5 litre Evo. I didn't expect them to ditch the EA211 altogether. 150 BHP from a 2.0 petrol seems rather old school these days, is it naturally aspirated?
 
It's a turbo, I assume it's a detuned version of the 190ps unit?

Ive gone past 10k in under 8 months in my 1.4Tfsi. Ive been seeing figures along the lines of 25mpg on a good local run but normally its around the 22-23mpg mark. Long motorway though i struggle to hit under 50 tbh. On a 250 mile run on motorway at 70ish i get 54mpg with not much bother..

My avg over 10.5k miles is about 35.6mpg

I’m getting 480 from a tank in my 2.0 TFSI, I use Tesco 95, I have used momentum but found no difference, I’m usually in auto.
 
Hamilton to Kirkintilloch today: 57.6 MPG. Good mileage is possible but I had to drive like I was resitting my driving test. Life’s too short man.
