Drive modes

Picked up my s4 today after a 8 hour round trip to Manchester so had the pleasure of driving it home. Wow what a machine

It made my m135 feel like it was made of tin

Anyway I have not yet read the manual and the weather was dreadful so was busy concentrating on road to worry too much about drive modes

I note that when pulling down the automatic drive lever you pop the car into s mode which I assume is dynamic However you can also have for example S individual or s auto

Can the car be put into full manual mode. I tried the padalls but car went back into automatic mode after a few seconds

Dynamic will respond to how fast you push the pedal. Most people use this drive mode I would say. Clue is in the name. Sport is sport. Full throttle response. Manual mode by flicking the gear lever left (full manual mode) . Put it back in drive mode just flick it right again. You can also use the paddles without moving the lever but if you are not changing gears and just cruising it’ll go back in the drive mode you had it. Useful for a quick downshift. Toggling from manual to drive will put it back into drive mode. There is also individual where you can set how you want steering, engine/gearbox/supspension etc to respond. You would benefit greatly from taking the time to read your manual.

Yes, just bear in mind that pulling the lever back to put it in ‘S’ drive mode doesn’t change any other settings such as suspension, diff, steering, etc so it’s not a full Dynamic mode. It’s just good for downshifting and pulling off well. I often drive in Efficiency unless I’m on it as it adds 10-20% to my mpg and then car drop the transmission into ‘S’ if I need more response.

Can I also make a suggestion, instead of creating all these threads just create one and call it by sunshinewelly's s4, then place all your questions in there, my ocd can't cope with multiple questions ;-)

The transmission mode and the Drive Select mode are separate. You can have the transmission in Drive, Manual or Sport regardless of which Drive Select mode the car is currently in. To go into full Manual on the transmission push the lever away from you sideways. The car will no longer automatically upshift in this mode. Hitting the paddles (or pushing the shifter up or down) is for when you want to temporarily over-ride D or S

I've just got my new S4,coming from and M135i. Only 790 miles in, but up and going I think the
M135i felt faster. You'll notice that in the S4, manual doesn't mean fully manual that your used to in the BMW.

I disagree S4 has far greater pull and grips the road in a way the m135 did not. I took my wife out for a spin who also drove both cars and she said s4 made the hair on her arms stand up..m135 never did that

How did I miss this thread as asked similar question.
Pulling stick back puts gearbox in sports (similar to stick to left on bmw)
When you put in dynamic it puts gearbox in sport for you where on the bmw you would set drive mode to sport and then push stick to left

...or floor it. Neither things in the BMW would cause it to change gear.

Yes if the car is in auto mode it'll switch to dynamic automatically if it detects large throttle movements...

RS4 doesn't change up, weird that the S4 does.

Mine bounced off the limiter when in manual and dynamic with the TC turned fully off when I did a launch. Found out you’re supposed to put the TC in ‘sport’ mode as a result.

I may have to give it a go tomorrow to see if I was actually in manual. I done my first launch with traction control fully off was a little scary as the road was the best for grip.

Not sure what you mean by doesn't mean fully manual. If you flick gear lever to the left (away from you) it is in full manula mode, unlike using paddles in pulling/pushing lever forward/back. as @cuke2u would say

Flick it to manual, stick it in 3rd at 30 and floor it, what happens, it kicks down to 2nd. Stretch it out to the rev limiter and it'll change for you, not fully manual in both cases. Seems to be a vag thing, the exact same logic was used in my Cupra DSG, I prefer the way bmw program the gearboxes in that respect. There are other aspects of the vag gearbox logic that I prefer though.

It only downshifts in manual mode if you push the pedal past the kickdown switch under the accelerator, otherwise it’ll stay in the same gear.

I don’t know about the upshifting, mine managed to bounce off the limiter for sure. Had it happen on launch and also while doing donuts in the snow.

It’s just the car telling you you’re not in the right gear for maximum acceleration, so stop complaining if you’re wanting to floor it!

RS4 not like that, holds gear hits limiter etc.

Tried that tonight and it still changed for me at the limiter. That was with TC off completely, long hold. Mine was built in May this year, maybe they've changed it.

I can’t see your signature on my mobile if it’s in there but what engine is it you have? Maybe it’s only the ‘performance’ S and RS models that they let hit the limiter? Don’t know.

Must just be something reserved for RS models. In full manual mode mine will bounce off the limiter regardless or traction or drive select modes. The rev counter also starts to go from green, Amber, red and then flashing red to tell you to change up.
