Smoking on startup...

Hi,

i have and S3 with smoking problem...
On startup there is a big blow of smoke coming out of exhaust, its the blue smoke (oil), its there only for a second or two, then the car runs normal, no sign of any smoke while driving hard or slow.

Oil level is not droping, turbo has 5k km on it, genuine BorgWarner...

Im thinking about changing valve seals as first.

Check all the usual stuff like oil drain routing from the turbo, the presence of a flow restrictor in your oil feed line etc first before tearing the head off to examine valve stem seals...

Thanks for advice, does oil feed has something to do with this? or just oil drain route? will take a look!

I'm guessing you've replaced the turbo recently,if so,has the problem occurred since then?

If it has,it may be from oil left in the intercoolers,if they wren't cleaned out when the turbo was changed.

If it’s only on start up, and everything was cleaned and fitted correctly with the new turbo, then I’d suspect valve stem seals.

Turbo was replaced half a year ago, since then i had fited an FMIC, brand new one.

Nope with valve stem seals you usually see a blue puff of smoke on cold start up or if you’re sitting at lights etc. Reason being oil is pumped up into the head during running, and when it’s turned off for a long period, say overnight, the seal cools and contracts, keeping the oil sitting there, then opens up when you start it up, dropping the oil into the cylinders. When sitting idling the engine vaccum causes oil to congregate around the seals, and then drop in when you move again.

If there’s blue smoke pouring out whilst accelerating then it’s going to be turbo or piston rings. If you’re completely certain the turbo was fitted correctly and you’re smoking under load then I’d want to do a leak down and compression test to check your rings.

I watched an video recently explaining most turbo / oil issues are because the feed line back to the sump is ineffective or too much blow by gases dont allow the feed to return to the sump then the oil lubrication / cooling overfills as it's being pumped in with nowhere to go. that's probably not your problem but hey

Under load there is absolutely no smoke!

So i hope its the steam seals then, thnk for advices will report back when i change them
