I have owned my S3 for coming up to a year now. It's completely standard and I have never been overly impressed with the sound (especially as where I love there are 3 RS3 around!). I want to give it a bit more of a noise but I don't want to spend a fortune.

Looking online I have noticed people unplug the exhaust valve sensor which I will do, I have also noticed people seem to get a Res delete, only problem is I can't really make out if it's a good sound or not from YouTube videos, last thing I want is to sound like I'm driving around in a Corsa with a huge backbox exhaust!

Just hoping to get some advice on what people would suggest I do, res delete, something or just keep it standard and wish I could afford the RS3!

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Res delete is a good mod, little cost and improves the sound. At the end of the day its never going to be an RS3.

2 of my videos (pre-facelift .. so FL sounds better).. obviously its more youtube videos andvideos don't do justice.. but what i would say is it doesn't sound like a corsa with a huge backbox
Also got to remember for the sound it makes... it is a 300hp car, not some some slow Corsa making a racket going 5mph ;) As Starry said though... will never be an RS3 ;)

This one is just me "farting" around in a car park haha

res delete is the best option without going overboard moneywise?

and dont worry, as oli says, it doesnt sound like a corsa, if it did there wouldn't be as many people on here with the delete done!

Thanks for all the replies, I'm convinced, I'm going to go with it!

One last question, I have heard the powervalve is the best one to get as they have the extra part for drone. I looked on their website but can't find it!

Thanks

I've always had problems with getting on their website...

I just gave @BCS Nige a call to book mine in to be fitted

Res delete is the best mod for the price. Some places do it for as cheap as £60. Everything is at least 30% louder. It all sounds the same as stock but just louder.

Not to hijack the thread but wanted to ask the guys who have the BCS Anti Drone Res Delete fitted how is the tone / cabin noise at 70/80 mph? I’d imagine that removing the resonator would increase this some what regardless of the anti drone features but is this bearable if you’re doing more frequent motorway miles, big different compared to stock?

I’ve been looking into a res delete for a while now but have just had a change in my work which will require a big increase in the mileage I’ll be doing, which will mean covering quite a bit of motorway on a daily basis, car currently is pretty silent at cruising speeds which I quite like and wouldn’t necessarily want to change. But a little more noise around town and when accelerating I wouldn’t mind :grinning:

honestly, none existent.

Where you do get drone is when your are in manual mode, in a higher gear than you need to be and you pull all the way through that gear, it drones a bit then.
But to me, if im on the mway with cruise on at 70mph upwards it sounds just like it did with the res in.

I just had my res delete done the next day after buying my S3, and honestly the feedback i have had from everybody i could not be happier. For the effect it has and the difference it makes it is a very cheap mod. I paid £140 supplied and fitted from Progressive Parts in Manchester, they are based in Fallow-field at VAGManchester. Great service too!

Oh and i shall also add, i did not chose to go for permanently open valves as i have heard this is what creates the drone at cruising speeds. When i cruise now in any mode, light acceleration or cruise control, there is no drone and car is quiet as you expect.

I would 110% recommend.

With mine yes, valves open at motorway speeds (70/80) not those who cruise along at 65.. But yeah, bit of drone.. Especially if you put the foot down. Or depends if you want to call it drown but just generally a deeper tone. Hence I have the awe system to shut the valves when on the motorway. It does make quite a noticeable different at those speeds.

Yes, and majority of my miles are motorway so don't think i can hack that. But if you have the system to open and close them then thats actually quite cool! is that a separate system? or can the option to open/close be coded in when coding the permanent open

I'm in the same position as you, Been thinking about this for a month now.

One of my worries is the warranty as anyone who as had there Resonator delete had any problems with the dealer when taking in??
Also do people in general still have there valves permanently open or in auto mode?

Do you have your valves permanently open?

If i was to go ahead and have it done it will be with Powervalve as they are not to far from me.

I just waiting on someone to give me that finally push!!!

No my valves are how they are stock

You could alway test them when open to see if it's too loud for you.

Yeah it's awe SwitchPath system. Unfortunately it costs quite a bit!

If you code them open though, they are just 100% open. Yup.

Everyone who had a Resonator delete have you told your insurance company? if so does it have any effect on your premium?

I haven’t, I don’t see why you need to. Firstly it’s a cheap mod, secondly they would never know. And also, i thought if you tell your insurance Audi would come to know if it incase insurance ever need to go through Audi through repair etc voiding your warranty.

I have told them, never changed me anymore.

For your valve question, try them open with res delete, and if it's too muchput the valves back to stock operating

I did, I think it was like £30 difference or something and 20 of that would have been the admin fee anyway!

Just spoken to my insurance AXA they basically told me if i take out the Resonator on my car my insurance would be invalid. So i'm guess going have to put the mod on hold until i'm up for renewal and trying find a different insurance company.

Which insurance company are you with??

When you all talk about having your valves open and getting this coded, can I ask what you mean by this?

I saw a YouTube video where the guy just unplugs a cable from the exhaust which then means they are permanently open, is this ok to do? It was so quick and easy I was going to do it tonight

I have FL and you can cruise at 100 before drone kicks in. My valves are fully open. Just keep engine revs below 3k and you won’t hear any drone.

Yes this is one way of doing it as it cost you nothing, but remember put some tape around the cable.

I personal did it through OBD11 as this won't throw up any faults.

Another +1 for Res Delete, but only because its a FL model. I wouldn't have done it if I had the PFL with just 6 gears as that is where a lot of the drone is heard.

I also told my insurance- it's a modification so needs to be done. Insurance companies will wriggle out of cover at any attempt and I have no doubt they would spot it if they looked hard enough. Given that so many people have done the mod and told their insurance, I suspect the savvy companies will have it on their radar. The hardest part in getting it added to the cover was trying to explain what it was, given that it's not an aftermarket exhaust etc. It upped mine by £50 I think.

I got mine down at TorqueFlow Exhausts in Birmingham, which is part of the well known MSL performance. Immy there was great to deal with and had it done in no time. I think I paid around £150 for the part supplied and fitted.

Worth every penny for when you floor it through a tunnel and time the upshift just right!

Admiral.

They seem to just consider it an exhaust modification. I feel like even if I changed the entire thing the mod cost would have been the same. I declare my AWE system and they didn't charge extra because I had already paid for the res delete. They did take note of it though.

Not and never will have res delete due to warranty issues but young @MattSedg car sounds ****** awesome better than my stock exhaust

Ok so this evening I unplugged the sensors for the exhaust valves and took the car for a spin... I didn't notice any difference at all, literally nothing!

Am I missing something here as videos I have seen on YouTube there is definitely a difference!

You probs did it wrong . Make sure valves are OPEN before unplugging. So turn on car... shift gearbox down to S1 and then you know its open. Then unplug.

Oh Ok, sounds like I did it wrong then as I did it with the engine off.

So if I plug them back in and then turn the engine on and unplug them?

Also, I have a manual so it's what do I do about the gearbox?

I've got a manual and what I found was that when I disconnected the valved in various states car on car off different drive modes nothing seems to keep them all open. With the car off having been in dynamic before shut off. I unplugged them. Went for a drive, but it seemed that the valves would shut the majority of the way maybe down to exhaust pressure. Some people have had success with YouTube instructions. I just went sod it and got a milltek system non res non valved with titanium tips. Little bit louder!

Turn car on then shift drive select to dynamic. You should audibly hear the exhaust slightly louder when valves open. Then unplug.

Has anyone else used the progressive parts res delete i'm thinking about getting that

I wouldn’t have thought the 7speed DSG vs the 6speed would make any noticeable difference to drone with the res delete. Pops and bangs maybe but not drone while cruising. Correct me if I’m wrong but both boxes sat at 70mph will be hitting a very similar pitch sound from the exhaust when in their top gear as they’re running a similar RPM. It’s the earlier gear ratios where you might hear a slightly different sound. But we’re talking 10ths of a second surely?

Not sure on numbers, but i do know the standard exhaust is very unrestricted and it seems silly to restrict it. I would say a restriction is a restriction where ever it sits in the pipe. The restriction would become even more of a problem if you were to map/tune your car. For another 50 quid you can have unrestricted pipe.
