DSG Stronic Oil leak - Audi A4 b9

£10k is eye watering. Were did you see the price? Was asking Re the clutch pack because I’m no familiar with the DSG architecture. That price basically makes this car worthless at the 5 year mark if someone went wrong with the DSG. Scary thought for long term ownership.

When I needed a new one...£12.5k fitted...managed to repair at a specialist replacing the clutch packs instead.
There’s a whole load of my posts out there on the matter :)

Ta. I’ll have a look. Once I get the photos of the clutch pack I’ll post them up. Have you got a link to your thread talking about your issues.

Tried to find it. Couldn’t. If you had a S4 b8 it wouldn’t be the Stronic because the S4 has the torque converter box.

The B8 S4 had s-tronic, it only swapped to the slush box for the B9 S4.

Thanks cuke, I’m going to have a good read. In the case of gearbox issues with the b8 many have brought up the clutch packs so I asked for Audi to give me a update on its condition yesterday and to send detailed pictures. I want peace of mind especially when Audi has reported to me that the gearbox is not within tolerances and the shudder I reported to them.

If I remember rightly the main issue with the s-tronic boxes on the B8 cars was mostly on the S4's? They were nearing the limits of the amount of torque they could handle so with spirited driving or launches you could fry the clutch packs. Also, once you remapped them it made the problem worse. I don't know if it affected them throughout the lifetime of the car or if there was some fix put in place though.

Not correct, was across all ranges with the box, Q3, Q5, A4, A5, S5 etc. The specialist has seen them all come in. Problem is even with an auto box they wouldn’t cover clutches as considered wear and tear??!

Fair enough, the only major issued I'd heard of were for the S4/5 was all. Related to the clutches anyway. Didn't think that there were that may issues with other versions to be honest, never had any issues with mine and it was tuned and launched plenty times. Haha.

Mainly mech units I believe tbh

That was my thinking too. I've heard of a decent number of them going but when it came to the actual clutches I'd not heard that much to be honest. Not that I have facts and figures or anything, obviously. Just from reports back from owners on here mainly. :)

The DL-382 has a wet clutch, as opposed to the dry ones as fitted to earlier stronic gearboxes, thus they 'should' have less issues.

The video is well worth a watch...

Definitely worth the watch. The amount of parts and complexity is something. I’m also having a read on wet clutch vs dry.

Is the mechatronic part of the gearbox? Well, what I’m trying to say is does it come as a bundle when replacing the DSG gearbox.

Don't quote me but I believe that it's the control unit for the clutch control? Essentially turning the control unit signals into some sort of mechanical motion. I'm pretty sure that it can be changed out independent of the entire gearbox but is still a substantial job.

This is the detail I read in my research into DSG boxes before I screwed up my courage and opted for s-tronic. This thread has brought back all my worst fears about s-tronic but so far, so good in my case - apart from a little inconsequential hiccup a couple of weeks back. For what it’s worth, though, I drove a manual B9 loaner for a week or so and the gear shift was awful. Not a patch on my A3 sportback which was silky smooth

I was in a similar situation but opted for the stronic in the end as I felt the traffic jam assist would work better with that gearbox, which it does. Also having driven a A4 with both gearboxes you are correct as the A4 longitude gearbox is nowhere as good as the one as was fitted to my 1.4 A3 saloon. So glad I made the change..

Wasn't there a recall here for faulty mechatronic units? A friend has an A3 with s-tronic that had the mechatronic replaced in Australia due to a recall although it had not caused them any problems. There was an issue with the circuit board becoming loose that could cause loss of drive. The only other widespread issue I was aware of was for the dry clutch dsg where they were prone to overheating and stop start traffic could exacerbate this. Wet clutch shouldn't be as susceptible

Edit: also, didn't VW extend the warranty on affected DSG transmissions to something like 5 or 10 years globally? Don't know if that was just for VW as a brand and just for certain years.

I was actually quietly hoping it would go down this route with the new gearbox. This may be a silly question but is the clutch pack bundled with the DSG? I’ve asked for some photos of the clutch pack to see the condition. I’m so glad I caught this early. Gearbox is something like £6k

See below - clutches are on the right. As you can see they are fully within the gearbox case so to replace them the gearbox has to be removed and partly disassembled.

For reference the 0B5 s-tronic gearbox used in the B8 A4/A5 range 2008-2016 is "wet-clutch". "dry-clutch" S-tronic boxes have been used on the A3 range.

Only extended in certain markets, Australia and Canada from memory, and when queried at the time told they were different markets and different conditions, so not a given in all countries.

The mech unit can be changed independently but you can’t get a box without one with it. Ie if the issue wasn’t the mech (as turned out in mine), you still had to get the full unit, and not the box without the mech.

That's a cool picture to see actually. Looks more like an R-Tronic than S-Tronic though?

I am, of course, referring to the gearbox as fitted to mine and Wes's car, which is the DL-382 and a brand new stronic version for the A4 built in China, as I have linked to in my thread. Yes other Audi's might still have dry clutches..

I agree - when I first saw it I was confused because the clutches do look a lot different from the DL501 which has concentric packs, the smaller inner for the even gears and the larger outer for the odd (and especially 1st). Looking closely at this diagram it looks like side-to-side packs with the one on the left for the outer (even) shaft and the one on the right for the inner (odd) shaft?

Sounds good. That’s what I wanted to know. Now I just need to know if they replace the clutch pack. Waiting on the
Response. Especially while the whole thing is out.

Yes - you do realise that the diagram I posted above is for the DL-382???

Yes I assumed it would have been and your knowledge of all that is stronic is far greater than mine...

or to translate from VW corporate speak - a PR disaster was occurring that was having an impact on sales.

Cars are tested in a range of climates and conditions for the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of miles and are engineered accordingly.

Good news. The whole unit is being replaced. So a new clutch pack.

“Just reference your point. I wouldn’t have photos of gearbox and clutches within, The gearbox hasn’t been split on this occasion. Given what has went on we replacing the full unit

It will arrive to us as full unit for fitment”

That is good news. A real shame you've had to go through all that with your new car. Really hope that once this gets sorted that it will be the last your car will see of the inside of a service centre other than for routine servicing.
