The engine is coming out....

Well then, to say I'm gutted is an understatement. . I took car in this morning to be hooked up to see if there were any updates to MMI etc after AudiCS said it was 'highly concerned' about the satnav trying to get me to go the wrong way down an entry sliproad and I should take it to my nearest dealer.
Anyway, i was beside a v6 diesel in a local carpark last week and i thought 'wow, that sounds way quieter than mine'. So, when I took it in this morning I thought i would mention this, that I had my car side by side with another and mine was far noisier and rattling. 4 hours later, my phone rings, yes sir, your car is in need of it's chain tensioners, and this is an engine out jobby. WTF iv'e only had it since may 26th ! So my question was, do I make use of Audi Approved used, and take it back for something else ( which may or may not have issues ) Or get the work done, with piece of mind that it's done, warranted etc with updated parts after a cooling down period (me not the car) So, iv'e gone with the latter, it goes in on the 16th for a full week ! I suppose in a way it's better, I get new oils etc but it's also annoying because i went after a car which I thought would be outside of the builds with somewhat 'dodgie' tensioners as I had read about some of them. On the initial reason for it going in, apparently my software in the MMI is the latest version so it's back onto AudiCS for their input. if it helps anyone here, here's a pic of my software

What model do you have?

Are the timing chain issues limited to a particular engine?

Mate of mine had the tensioners and chain replaced on his BiTdi at approx 80k.....

He had an aftermarket warranty so all he paid was £50. Total job cost was approx £4500 if I remember correctly

His was a bit of a Friday afternoon car mind.....!

@paultaylor A6 allroad 2015 65 plate 272 . the service guy said it was related to a build period, but never said what period exactly.

@Rhyso mines got 44k miles on it, audi warranty still has 3 months original warranty on it and 11 1/4 moths approved used audi warranty, i've read somewhere that when done at an audi center it's circa 6k

Thank God it surfaced now though, instead of just out of warranty. I think you've probably got to give them the chance to rectify it first have you? Or is straight up replacement an option with used approved with faults? Good thing is (you'd hope) that if it's a recognised fault with a certain build date, it means they know the cause & can put a permanent fix in, rather than replacing with like-for-like, which would be a ticking time bomb.

Audi won't upgrade the MMI system unless there is a specific fault that can be replicated during a test drive or while it's with the dealer. The way they look at it is, if it's not broken then don't fix it! As they have to charge Audi Germany for time to update the MMI system, and unless there is a fault they can reproduce and there is a valid TSB then the dealer cannot claim the costs back. Also as there are many versions of the MMI system, and each system could have dozens of software versions, so they need to put the correct one on the car, and the dealer system is quite inflexible (By design from Audi Germany) so the tech would have no idea what to put on the car unless the computer say's so.

thought i had covered this already, a few reboots for no reason, dropping BT devices, and sometimes non responsive or sticky volume ctrl
and AudiUK after seeing my evidence of the mentul satnav wanted my car in for diagnosis and update checks

My mates was done at an Audi dealership. I think he somehow negotiated a reduction in the labour as initially the warranty company were not going to pay for everything. They were only going to pay for the failed part but Audi recommend replacing all the parts associated with the chain

Lucky for you, you still have your original warranty! I did some searching last night and it does seem there is a certain batch affected as a few A7 owners were reporting the problem

With the warm weather we've had, I've started my 2015 272 a few times with the windows down and heard a slightly disconcerting rattle. Not only on start up, but also under acceleration at low speeds, but did wonder if it was just standard diesel rattle, as my previous 3.0tdi was mapped. Did bug me that my old 170k ' 09 A4 was quieter than my 50k '15 A6 though.
Spotted this thread and having read the above it concerned me more and this morning I mentioned it whilst dropping my car off for its last service before the warranty expires at the end of the month.
On collection tonight they've confirmed it's the chain, so I'm in the same situation. Thankfully, just in warranty so a £3k+ bill for Audi to pick up, but I'll be in a loaner for a week.
Just wanted to thank everyone for sharing the info above, otherwise I may not have mentioned this and then been picking the bill up myself in the months to come.

Would you be able to post a video of the engine bay when you start it from cold to highlight the sound you mentioned?

If you pop the bonnet open before you start it in the morning you will definitely hear it, its very distinctive and easy to tell where it comes from, back left or right or both

I've only heard it badly a couple of times on start up, the majority of cold starts are fine, so difficult to record the noise Im afraid.
For me, it's more common and noticible going down a narrow road/ against a wall etc at 15-20 mph and then accelerating - it's a rattly noise, louder but not dissimilar to pre-ignition/pinking on a petrol engine. Appreciate that there's likely a degree of diesel clatter that your bound to hear, but it's much more noticeable than my previous 170k miles 3.0tdi, although that was mapped. I had put some of the absence of diesel clatter on that down to a better fuel map until yesterday.
