I've got a 1.4tfsi 123bhp, just a stepping stone to get my insurance down before i get an S3 in a couple years time because as you know the insurance at 20 years old isn't the cheapest.. especially with no NCD, i have been quoted 173bhp and 180bhp form two separate tuners on a remap however this is quite higher than the majority of other places i have asked who have quoted around 145-150bhp does anybody have any idea if they think 173bhp or even 180bhp will be safe for my engine and components such as turbo, clutch ect?

(No previous performance mods)

Just for a stage one remap/tuning box, you’re probably looking at 140-150bhp.
Don’t go with the place that has the highest bhp for the cheapest price as it will most likely cause you problems in the future. Sort your exhaust and Intake out then go stage one. Also use v power!

Hmmm well they have excellent reviews and said they can get me 173bhp or anything less if i wish and the price is normal in comparison to other tuners, also tried to reassure me it will be fine for my components providing i am not redlining it all day every day which is reasonable, and when you say sort my exhaust do you mean get a dcat? what will this do to help? still kinda new to all this modding so im still figuring everything out.

so are you saying its a risk or its guaranteed to have negative results in the long haul?

Sorry I was thinking of the 120bhp version. The 173-180bhp you mentioned sounds about right for your engine. In terms of the exhaust. I think it’s better to reduce the restriction of the exhaust and intake when remapping as you’ll notice more gains and throttle response. If you have warranty then I’d say it isn’t worth it yet

Have you run these modifications past your insurer?
Most underwriters are not keen to take on the risk of a 20 year old with a performance modified car. Exhausts and fancy air filters are a give-away if you need to make a claim.

Right okay, what does that involve? Is it pricey? I’ll ask the tuners if they can do it and yeah I’m gonna get an intake aswell soon, any suggestions or links? Like I said this car is just a stepping stone to getting an s3 so I don’t want to spend a fortune on it so anything reasonably priced but good quality ?

Have a google or see what others have done on YouTube to get ideas. You could start by removing the snowgrate in the air box? All you have to do is undo the 4 screws, lift the filter out and remove the grate. I’m
Not sure how much you’re looking to spend but then look into cat backs. I’m not an expert on it all myself but do a bit of research and you’ll work it out

You might get away with a remap unless the accident is really serious, but if an insurance assessor sees an exhaust and air intake alarm bells will ring and they probably won't pay out.
They'll also cancel your insurance and you could have difficulties getting insured in the future.

You’ll be in breach of your policy if you don’t and as stated already your insurer has the right to cancel your policy and won’t pay out on a claim should they find out.

You may feel it’s a risk worth taking but trust me that S3 will be even less affordable if your record flags you have had insurance terminated.

As others have said, you definitely should mention to your insurer. I pay a small premium on top of my standard cost for a remap. Also bear in mind that some insurers will only insure you on the remap if it's within approx 20% gain of the stock engine power. When i called directline, they had 3 prices for within 10, 20 and 30% power increase.

Ill have a word with them once i finish my policy in a couple months and go to renew

Personally with the stuff I've done, I've let my insurance company know on the day I've done it. If I was to have a problem and need to claim, with obvious exhaust modifications and a tuning box connected, if someone with half a brain took a look at the car they know its been modified.

The cost of declaring the mods is miniscule compared to the cost of the insurance company not paying out. And having that risk from the day the mod is done to the day you tell them in a couple of months... For me... To risky.

I don't know how the insurance stuff works though to be honest.. Like, does someone from the insurance company have to come and see the car before they payout to check it? It's like when you declare your mileage on insurance forms.. How do they know its correct.

If the car is beyond repair it would have been inspected by an insurance assessor, they will look out for these things.

If it goes to an improved repairer for Work I think they may instruct the garage to report back and comment if adjustments have been made.

I have a friend with 1.4 tfsi 140 hp engine. With re-map / downpipe / full exhaust he has around 190-200 hp and no problem for 30k kilometers.
