272bhp tdi A7

Hi all!

I’m thinking of swapping my 15 plate RS3 for a 272 A7 tdi, in terms of speed obviously I know not much can compare to a RS3 but are they still quick enough?

I need more fuel economy and a bigger car for the family, never driven a A7 before so Iv not got a clue how they drive also.

Any advice is much appreciated

Well, first off there is no comparison between the 3 and 7 series models.

The RS3 is loud, brash, in your face fast. And fun.

The A7 is supremely comfortable, weighs more than 2 tons, and is like marmite. People either love the shape or hate it. I’m on my second, and love them. It’s not a fun car in the way the RS3 is, but it still brings a smile to my face when l drive it.

The oil burners are fine cars, the biturbo is the best of the bunch though. It’s a big car, both in size and weight, so make sure if you have a garage it will fit in. It’s a l o n g car as well, so l highly recommend one with a rear parking cam!

Why don’t you try and arrange a test drive of tha same model at your local dealer?

Trouble is the standardised car parking space dimensions are from the 80's or 90's .

I regularly see small and medium cars in car parks and I'd be puzzled how a driver gets back in .

An A7 would be a boot job .

Is it that much of a issue parking?

Test drove one today, I do like them. As you say though can’t compare it to the RS3, speed seems fine I never hammer the RS3 or I would be getting 12mpg lol this is part of the reason I want the A7. I just want to make sure I make the right decision.

No this is what we did with our A4 mate

Some **** opened their car door and left a small dent right on the contour line of our White car, which, after asking some dent specialist, they couldn't pull it out. Even though it was a small dent it REALLY peed me off because I'd paid good money for the car and the person had just drove off!

This is why I park a mile away, and I will be doing it in the A7 regardless if it was a small or large car, there is no way I want anyone doing the same and being careless!

Honestly don't know what goes through peoples heads, when I park close to someone, and don't have an option, I always try my dam hardest to squeeze myself out without touching their car, its to do with respect.

Can anyone tell me if the 17 plates have apple car play on the A7? Also does the Bose system have a subwoofer?

Yes I absolutely loved the Test Drive....and that's as far as it went haha

I am now Offshore in Holland (get home Wed after working 2 weeks) and my other half had the lucky day for picking the car up (grrrr), ever since then I've looked at pictures and dreamed of the day I get home haha

But...I can tell you the car is an absolute beast! it also looks absolutely fantastic and has some pick up but then you already had that with the RS

As you can see from my profile photo, it looks amazing and I cant wait to get home to play like a kid on Xmas day

Still trying to decide had my RS3 for 9 weeks but I realise I made a mistake, need a much bigger car and it’s costing me nearly £70 a week for on average 200 miles and that’s not spanking it around everywhere....

Does anyone have a idea on service costs? Again my RS3 is £1200 for 2 services from Audi!! Even independents want £470 for one service.

The only killer is road tax is £450 a year which is stupid!! It was registered in June 17!

I made the mistake a good few years ago and traded a car for a 2003 Silver Ford Focus ST and it’s the worst thing I’ve ever done! For a £60 tank I was getting around 300 miles and thought that was really bad. It was also a lemon, there was always something wrong with it.

Needless to say we will NEVER buy another Silver car and have never looked back when we purchased our first Ibis Audi A4, then came the A7 and it gave us the Wow which the A4 never. Best thing to do is go test drive and stick it in Dynamic

I’ve had my tornado grey 272 TDI A7 black edition from new in March 2016 and it is unusual in that it has the air suspension option plus quite a few other extras including advanced parking, active cruise and high nav.

The car will really shift in dynamic mode (the initial throttle response in auto mode is dozy) and I’ve averaged just under 38 mpg over 32000 miles, I often see mid 40s on a long run. From what I’ve heard the bi-turbo is significantly thirstier than the 272 engine.

It is a big car so all the comments are spot on about parking well away from everyone else (and deliberately avoiding many multi storey car parks). It’s also a bit big to carve through urban / city traffic, doesn’t often stop me doing so though.

I have the steering in dynamic mode all the time and even then I’d prefer it to be heavier and offer more feedback. I recently replaced the original P zeros with Vredestein Ultrac Vorti R tyres and they need highish pressures to achieve a tolerable ride over rougher roads - that exaggerates the light steering issue.

Overall I’m very happy with the looks and performance, plus I still love the interior which is really practical with the big thatch, but the tyre change has created some ride and handling issues that I need to sort. Also I’m about to switch to all black badges as I think they’ll suit the tornado grey better than the standard chrome.

I’d be surprised if you didn’t like the 272 after a test drive...

Ooooh avoid the Multi Storey car parks?

Don’t think that will happen with us, we like to park up in the Union Street car park in Aberdeen but then we park in the kids spaces when up with them so we do have space in between each cars

Moral of the story, have kids or loan one for each day to park in the wider spaces haha

Yeah it’s a fantastic car the RS3 and quite easily the best car I have ever owned, I just think it’s down to the traffic conditions when I go to work. I just can’t justify having a car this quick and thirsty.

I've had my 272 A7 for around 5 weeks now, it is quick but is deceptive due to the smooth way it delivers it, it's also very quiet (quieter than my prev F11 530d) so it's a great motorway cruiser. I do c25k per year so comfort and refinement were top of my list and opted for the A7 as I had an itch for awd and the A7 was the cheapest way to get into a decent sized awd.

My Mrs works for VAG and i looked @ Golf R estates but I was put off by the ride and power delivery (I'm only 50) in retrospect I'm glad I did as they are everywhere now and often driven by hoodie wearing car modders round here.

Go for it you'll love it.

What is it like for parking the one I am getting has no camera on there, I used to have a 3 series before the RS3 and that felt like a small car anyway.

I’m looking forward to it, RS3 is a unreal car just can’t justify the costs even on servicing Audi quoted me £1246 for 2 services, even independent was coming in around £480. It’s mental for what u actually use it for it’s not worth it.

I want the A7 because I hardly see any and it looks much smarter then a A6 imo.

Deffo needs a camera, my BMW had surround view so I was spoiled, this has front and rear and to be fair the quality of the camera's is poor ime. In the BMW I could read a number plate @ 20 meters, in this I struggle to see what type of car it is, they are really poor quality and look like the film has been left on the lens.

On the BMW it was handy having the bumper mounted camera's for pulling out of junctions, really clear, but although the front and rear on this have a split view mimicing 2 camera's (software I guess) I wouldn't trust it.

Be interested if there was an upgrade to be had so let us know if you buy one without and go down the aftermarket route.

Nah I don’t think il bother with aftermarket to be honest I’m not too worried about parking to he honest on the test drive it seemed fine moving into tight spaces etc.

In Dynamic mode you can forget anything north of 25 Love the car but the fuel consumption is concerning me esp after reading this. I bought from Audi Used and have a warranty with them so should i ask for it to be checked ??? or would a remap sort it out ??? ]

I've done 15k miles in my BiTdi and have got 32mpg average over that period (I reset the long term gauge when I bought it, not touched it since). I generally get around 40 on the motorway cruising around 80mph in eco but nothing much over 25 on a day to day basis around town and faster A roads in dynamic mode.

I’ve just checked mine again, the trip computer shows 37 over the last 20k but only 31 over my regular 9 mile commute this morning. You’ll see my car is at nearly 53k now so we’ll loosened up.
