Wheel Bearing issue I think

Probably been discussed a lot but just want to confirm my suspicion.

Noticed a whirling noise yesterday at around 60mph which gets faster with speed.
kind of sounds like a mini plane driving along side me.

Doesn't do it straight away when everything is cold but after 5 mins on the motorway it starts up.
I'm thinking wheel bearing and have booked the car in with Mini where i bought it from as i have a 12 month warranty and i think it will be covered.

Anyone else had this and is there definite way to check?
I'm thinking of jacking the car up on that side and spinning the wheel by hand to see if its noisy.

any ideas?

Jack the car up, hold the wheel at six and twelve o clock, try and feel play in the bearing by pushing and pulling at these positions then repeat with hands at three and nine o clock. There should be no discernible play.

I have tried that and doesn't seem to be any play. But the noise is definitely there. Has just started last 2 days so no other be the start of it failing. It's booked in for a week on Wednesday anyway. Driving down. To derby net week so I might get worse during that 300 mile round trip

Mine did the same, use a mechanics stethoscope to identify it. Mine started about 30mph drivers side.

Got new bearing from Audi approx. £125 but without hub. ECP do one with a hub for £175 iirc don`t know if that was before or after their many discount codes.

Seems to be a common fault - see the other thread that's knocking around.

Mine tend to be worst at around 40mph and the noise gets quieter bit more high pitched at higher speeds.

Definitely sounds like a bearing though!

Driving a lot at the weekend and as soon as the bearings are warm it starts with the aeroplane sounds and as you say Slackworth, it gets quieter at high speed and more high pitched.
Most noticeable when coasting down from 50mph down to 20mph its really loud.
Its going in next week, i just hope they pick it up as there is no play when trying to move the wheel.

So I've just heard back from the garage they said have listened to both front wheel bearings with a stethoscope and picked up some rumbling of the passenger side wheel bearing.
they have also noted that both front wheels are buckled apparently although i have just had 2 screws took out of the drivers side tyre on 2 separate occasions and the tyre fitter didn't notice this and balanced the wheel no problem.
£2100 for 2 new wheels which i kindly declined.

They have said they cant guarantee the noise will go away as might be the buckled wheel causing it lol

I've told them to just fix the wheel bearing under the warranty and i will get in touch with the garage i bought the car from to complain about the wheels being buckled, see how far i get

just swap the wheels to the back see if the noise moves the cheeky blighters

I’m driving in France at the moment and with no radio on at 70mph there is a whirring noise

I checked the tyre pressures and all ok.

It doesn’t come from anywhere in particular

56k miles.

I ordered two new complete bearings with hubs and going to have them fitted next week.

Does anyone have any idea how far you can drive with the whirring sound going?

Will it get it worse and louder etc?

A worn bearing could last ages or fail tomorrow. At least the bearing is a double race one so you would be unlucky for both to collapse.
