Notice local dealer, Highland Audi, advertising UTR set up for £299. I'm kinda tempted as considered it when the car arrived but the cost was just too high. Bit wary that maybe this is old tech - anyone any experience of the kit? or seen similar offers elsewhere.

Is that front and back, or just front? I'd be interested in that price, but it's a bit of a trek from South London...

Installed cost or just the kit? Front only or Front + Rear?

I got F+R installed in my SQ5 and apart from some issues with not being able to reset the WiFi password the actual cameras perform well in both driving and parking modes. The front camera has a simple one touch button to enable disable audio recording. Front camera also easily slides off windscreen mount if you need to clean your windscreen. Rear camera is smaller but fixed.

I installed a 32GB SD card (came with a 8 GB card) to increase driving recording time over that standard 30 minutes up to over 2 hours. Driving mode videos are 1 minute each. The parking mode snapshots are 20 seconds each and based on front camera radar and physical movement of the car (pray that doesn’t happen!).

The .avi video files produced have two video streams and can be viewed in VLC on a Mac/PC. As I said I’ve not been able to export to my phone as the WiFi on the device is not working, am pending some tech support from my dealer.

Thought the front camera would distract as it’s below the rear view mirror, but it’s actually not too bad.

Yes, it’s taken some adjustment but I’m OK with them. The main thing is that they are not noticeable from outside the car. I know that privacy laws are stopping this but with all the cameras built into the car, we have to be close to a factory dash-cam solution soon?

@mxnrg here is a tip from another member re the Wi-fi etc. Did you do the update. He explains it helped the clunky app.

“ The App. In a word 'clunky' as others have said. Initially I couldn't achieve a wifi connection (Iphone 5s). I found the answer was to set the wifi in iphone settings to the UTR signal THEN start the app. If you have the app already started it just never gets to the first step which is to prompt a change from the generic password. So, having changed the camera SSID and password and the security protocol to that prompted by iphone I was in! Changed a couple of other settings to my requirements (not essential) and then was prompted to do a firmware update by the UTR app. Takes about 5 mins but all went through OK. The App then became far more responsive which probably explains the initial clunkiness. All cameras and initial recordings checked and OK for position / picture quality”

I have come across anything with the new privacy laws and dashcams, although it might be different in other countries. What have you found out?

I just meant the manufacturers are staying clear of factory fit cameras that record. In theory the 5 cameras on my SQ5 could all do the job of the UTR, but this would i introduce issues in some countries. Allowing dealer fit accessories is down to each country...

Thanks for the tip. My issues wasn’t initial connection to the app, it was accidentally setting the WiFi password to 7 characters and not being able to reconnect. Still waiting for the dealer to get back to me...

It was I that posted the UTR set up experience. I must confess I'm usually pretty adept with stuff like this but the UTR set up was shall I say less than slick based on the information manual contained in the APP*. I too was puzzled what the UTR wi-fi was up to when initially I couldn't connect to it to set the App parameters up. Only resolved once I'd selected the UTR wi-fi in iphone settings then opened the UTR App. It seemed to spring into life then. Of course, no such tips or instruction are contained in the UTR manual. For what it's worth the password I now use having changed from the default is 9 characters (default is 10). Can't see why 7 characters should work.

*So if the manual is contained in the App, how did I work around setting the Iphone with the App closed (my memory for unfamiliar details isn't as sharp as it one was to assimilate the manual and recall it). Simple, I used an Ipad with UTR App to display the manual while I fiddled with the coupling the Iphone to the UTR. Once I'd cracked that and addressed the prompted firmware update repeating the same for the Ipad was a snip. I figure that maybe the ipad will be better for viewing video if ever I have cause to see details before downloading from the SD card.

Did you have any issues with the 32GB SD card, formatting and recording etc? I plan to put a 64GB in mine.

That's damn good tbh. Beats the price offered for front supply and fit by my dealer by some margin (£495 all in). I presume the price includes labour and VAT?

I think the maximum SD card size that I read has worked with the Audi UTR is 32GB. Specifically the Samsung EVO Plus Class 10 (95 MB/s Read 20 MB/s Write). So I got one of these, I need to double check the the recordings are working fine by removing the card and checking on my laptop.

I understand your setup issues with the WiFi, I heard earlier firmware for this device was problematic. I just wish I had set a longer WiFi password when I first managed to connect. Oh well, will call someone at Audi tomorrow as it's got to be simpler to reset the WiFi that than this!

I paid £565 for Front & Rear fitted on my SQ5. I think the price on the configurator is now £499, which is annoying.

Noted and thanks. If I have problems with the 64GB SD (went for a Scandisk class 10 similar read and write I'll try a 32GB one instead of losing sleep!
Now you mention the work 'reset' I forgot to add that during my tribulations I did reset the UTR using the pin hole next to the LED's. Maybe that helped as it was shortly after (can't be certain of precise events) I started getting some joy. Did you try that?

Yes I tried the reset button. It only restarted the UTR, so far it has not reset the SSID or the password of the WiFi...

There should be a way to reset the SSD and password but maybe they can be when the camera is connected by USB to a PC? I can understand the reset not clearing the SSD and password as this will be a security thing.

I'm running a SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC Memory Card A1 App Performance up to 100MB/s, Class 10, U1 - FFP.

The rest button does reset the password but you have to hold it down for 3-5 seconds (cannot remember which), that should set it back to factory defaults.

Hello @B5NUT I’d love to have you confirm exactly how this is done as I’ve tried this about 20 times with no change in SSID or password. I tried holding down the reset for a short press (5-10 seconds) or a longer press (20-30 seconds). None of these changed the SSID or password back to the default. Each time I have tried all the happens is that the device restarts but neither SSID or password change back to the factory default :(

Have you successfully changed the SSID/password and then reverted them with the reset button?

I’m losing my mind as to why this isn’t simple to fix!

I’m not aware of any software to interact with the UTR if I managed to connect it to a PC. The front camera slides onto a mount fixed to the windscreen, I didn’t check if that connector is USB or proprietary. There are no other sockets on the camera unit.

Thanks.

I was assuming it has as other dashcams, as far as I know, do. If not then its a lot of money for a single or two channel setup.
Does holding down the power button reset the wifi?

Nope, will make appointment to get dealer to fix it or replace the camera unit. Pity as otherwise the quality of the footage and dual feed is very good.

I did a quick search and you're not alone with this issue...

Thanks, will push dealer to replace the unit if it can’t be reset.

You got any links from your research?

Software just isn’t good enough. Think of most car markers. Except Tesla. Think we are spoilt with apple products, where it just works.

I reset my unit a few weeks after I got it installed using the rest button, but that was last year and I know they have upgraded the firmware since then. I would if the firmware upgrade has broken something, I know it's made the camera a little more sensitive to knocks, as it how beeps when you close the door, as states you have issues during parking even though you just shut the door..

Interesting @B5NUT, did you change just the password or the SSID as well? I noticed the beeps while going over speed bumps as well. Waiting for dealer to confirm how to resolve this.

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess because there is no software to connect to a pc, and I am assuming the app isn't capable, you cannot upgrade the firmware yourself unlike other webcams?

I know it rest the password back to factory default, as it was one of the first things I changed, then I got the car back from the dealer, well that and looking at the footage of the test drive and when it was in the dealers. Have to say it was 10 out of 10 for how they looked after the car and the quality of the installation not a single rattle or scratched bit of trim and they fitted front & rear camera

The firmware is part of the APP that you download (Android or Apple) There was a firmware update when they updated the App back in April this year, but the only thing I noticed was the increase in sensitivity mainly in parking mode.

yeah 299 fitted with VAT, was originally 499

bit the bullet and booked in for a front camera to be fitted, having to wait a few weeks for a slot as they need it all day. Did look at the blackvue and have just fitted one in the defender for the upcoming overseas trip but the quality of fitting I have seen at our local halfords put me right off letting them anywhere near my A4.

I am sure I have read of other owners having had cams fitted by halfords and been happy with it. Its the old saying you pays your money and make your choices....
