Best way to dechrome?

Hey guys,

What's your preferred approach to achieve a chrome delete? I'm looking to dechrome the windows and front grille. I would love to have a go myself, any advice?

I had my chrome trim wrapped. I think it cost about £80-100. I’m pleased with how it looks.

Not that long ago hen I was more enthusiastic about doing things on my cars myself, I bought some decrome tape. Spent the best part of a day stressed, angry, frustrated and decided then that I would only ever wrap a gift if the wife begged in the future. Anything else I would leave to the professionals. Lost a day of my life and could have paid someone £60-70 to do the work.


To paraphrase the above, don't do it yourself, let someone who does it for a living do it. It'll end up looking better and you wont lose a day

(dont ask me about window tinting, I mean how hard can that be... )

Thanks for the offer but I really don't fancy stripping the bumper off especially for some of the quotes I've received.

Thanks for the heads up, I have a feeling that's what it may end up like. Plasti-dip solutions looked easy and straight forward but I've heard of being very temporary.

On my car, I went with a black RS6 front grill, replaced the chrome SLine badges on the front wings and the A6 on the boot with black ones from eBay, had my roof rails and window trim wrapped in gloss black.

I had my chrome trim wrapped. I think it cost about £80-100. I’m pleased with how it looks.

Don't know if it's a common thing, or if it's a case of the sun is heating up the vinyl on the driverside, but I've noticed stretch marks on the vinyl wrapped window trim, where the top part of the door seal strikes it when you close the door, both the front and rear doors. It's only obvious when you are close to it.

I have used plastic dip on mine, front grill, rear badge and rear diffuser all matt black, and i am delighted with the results, peperation is the key here and a light first coat (60%) hope to do the window chrome surrounds next. will post picture when finnished.

I tri d to plastidip my window trim and it was a ball ache to peel off and took parts with it so ended up wrapping it myself. It takes ages and the rear window section is a nightmare but did it in the end.

Nearly finished the plastic dip on the window chrome, first attempt was a disaster and got the same problems as Jule5 described . re done it again this time not covering the rubber parts and using a scapel and it has turned out really well, am delighted with the finnish. should finnish the other side of the car tomorrow weather permitting, will post picture when completed

Finished the de chrome effort on the car with Plastic Dip. Really pleased with the results. the window trim is very tricky to do and as i only done one side at a time i learned a lot on the first go. You can separate the chrome from the rubber surround by inserting light cardboard paper between them and folding the cardboard and masking in to the window pulling the rubber a little away from the chrome to make the plastic easier to peel away. I also did the front grill and back rings and defuser

Looks absolutely top banana mate well done. I've just bought some plasti dip to do my wing mirrors. Any tips for spraying the stuff? How many coats did u do

When using the plastic dip keep agitating the can every few minutes and store in warm water before use. don't spray to close keep about a least a foot away and just do a light coat for the first coat. i used 4 coats in total. just make sure to area is really clean and dry.

I would avoid plasti cote / dip it will eventually peal off and then. its a whole different barrel of issues

If the plastic dip is applied properly its is very durable and should last for years, if you give enough coats in the first place it should peal away very easily if you have problems later, shouldn't be any barrel of issues if done correctly.

That video just backs up what i said. and the guy would use plastic dip again. also he did the whole car, i am only talking about plastic dipping the chrome trim, i found this out when i had to peel all of the first effort on the chrome on one side after the peeling process also took some off the chrome and looked tacky. no bother peeling it all off and then redoing it properly
