Absolutely fuming with admiral insurance. Received a letter today informing me my policy has been cancelled, no mention of why and I've checked the DD payments and all have been taken. Only took the policy out in march. This bit is amazing apparently my policy was cancelled from the 17th may which means as I use it every day I've been driving illegally and God knows what would have happened if I'd had a accident.
No letters or phone calls to advise any issues. Tried calling and they are not back in the office til the morning now got to find some insurance oh and they want to charge me £49 for admin aswell for the cancellation

how dangerous is that, cant actually believe never had anything like, 16years no claims, never been rejected before.

surely legally they should be stating in there letter the reason why, they make no mention of it

is there an administration error perhaps?

Never heard or not heard insurance companies cancelling existing policies. Its a cowardly way to treat (ex)customers but i've had some fun when I was them and told them my car was lowered as a suspension component and the guy on the end asked me ...."why do you want to do that...." and "please hold while I speak to my manager" lol

DD will always stay live, its like if you took a loan and finish paying it off - it is down to the customer to cancel it.

Content about the cancellation fee if they try to take it as they have 'cancelled' it from their end. Terms and Conditions are really sneeky these days and sometimes need a fine tooth-comb to read and understand it.

Best to call up and speak to someone in the right department and the front desk dont know much and only read what on their screen. See if you can speak to an underwriter to get a better indication why it was cancelled and yes you could have had an accident or been pulled over by the police for no insurance but as you were not informed and only waiting for a letter to be notified its a really crappy process how they do it but its in their own right to do such a thing. If you want to complain (you can write to them) but chances you'll be with another insurance company by then.

yeah just seems unlawful, if i havent paid or lied about something then fair enough but i havent done either and if they have a query i think a 7 days warning by letter but ive had nothing. very dangerous situation to be in could literally ruin someones life i cant believe how lucky ive been in that instance.

From previous experiences Admiral are an awful insurance company to deal with, lucky you never had to make a claim. I went with them for my first year of driving, all normal until it came to claiming when someone ran in the back of me, no witnesses and the other party was insured with Admiral too. 12 months later it dragged on until I was told they weren’t willing to take my case to court to settle liability and my option was to take 50/50 or find my own solicitor to go to court. Never would take a policy out with them again even though they usually come up with the best price.

Anyway back on track after my rant, I’m pretty sure if they’ve cancelled a policy they have to give you a reason as to why they’ve done so. Trying to charge the cancellation fee is pretty laughable though!

Should the worse have happened, I would think you would have had a good chance of fighting it as youve made the payments as agreed by the contract in place between you and Admiral. Id make as bigger issue of it as possible, there's too many people who dont bother with insurance which costs the rest of us. The fact you've paid and they have cancelled it is really not on.

Keep us posted

I can't believe they can just cancel your insurance without prior warning and without stating why, have they been trying to call you?
Do you have any mods on your car that you have advised them of, some insurance compananies won't touch a modded car. Maybe the underwriters knocked it back?
Good luck getting it sorted though, I'd be fuming too!

Let’s hope just an admin error that can be fixed with a call this morning, if they have still taken payments then I’m pretty sure that they will be obliged to provide you with cover as cancellation will require notice.

Maybe because it's an S3 ?

Given the tealeaf's cream over them , too much of a risk for an insurance company .

Terrible not to give notice .

True - but that should have been considered before entering the contract and taking money.

Rob - do you have a certificate of insurance and a policy document?

They'll take anyones money these insurance companies and make up what they want and treat you how they like .

Donkeys ago on a modified Nova with Performance Direct they cancelled after 6 months because it was modified !!!

I went with them because they were a modified insurance company and mods were declared.

Admiral recently offered renewal on my S3, I know lots of differing factors like postcode, own record etc but I doubt that they are ruling them out they’ll just up the premium.

I had some places just rule me out but I think that's because I'm under 25..

Admiral came out at half the price compared to other places and a third of the price compared to most.

As others have said. Hopefully this is an admin issue as surely they can't just cancel it via post!

Either an admin issue or else something has come to light that wasn’t declared.

well i spoke to them this morning, heres goes.
They cancelled my policy as i didnt send a copy of the front and back of my driving licence. Apparently they have sent several emails and even a text message which i havent received until I got the letter yesterday. The guy i spoke to said its is my fault as when i signed up i chose email as the method of communication (i assumed it was marketing and id rather emails that them giving my mobile numbe rout to all sorts and i have to keep fielding calls) I asked why they need it and they said DVLA had flagged a discrepency on the details but they didnt know what. They told me to go on the DVLA website and you can check driving history using driving licence and NI number , which i have done now i'm at work, no points or claims on the screen and driving licence number is correct etc so i have no idea what any of it is about.
If i wanted to reinstate the insurance they wanted me to send through the pictures there and then it takes 48hours for verification. I needed to drive to work this morning so needed insurance asap so said it would be quicker getting cover elsehwere to which he replied of course that descision is yours. So i've had to get new insurance this morning. the most important point to note is that this is the only letter i have received and i wanted to complain i think they should change their policy and actually call or send a letter with a warning for 7 days to which he replied we sent a email.
As he was checking the dates he noticed that it said portal instead of postal. So he said ''i will check with our IT department if he has been sent to the portal i will refund the admin cost to you as thats not following procedure''. But other than that he didnt really seem to bothered. so as a lessen to anyone i would say dont chose email as communication preferences and be very careful who you use for insurance as it seems quite common I consider myself very lucky after hearing the stories of people being banned or huge fines and there is nothing you can do.
On a different note the insurance ive just gone with literally gave you a link to upload the NCB and driving licence which i did straight away which is a much better way that asking for it after the policy has started plus i had confirmation back that its been done so no confusion

That's ridiculous ....
crazy isnt it. never had any issues with insurance before. Cant believe i have been so lucky, one i didnt have a accident and two i didnt get the car impounded and crushed for no insurance. Will never go with them again, there the same compnay as elephant and diamond i've put a complaint in and a reques that they change the way they deal with it, bearing in mind im driving around with no insurance and have paid by DD so i think im covered.

I had an issue with a licence discrepancy a few years back when collecting a loan car.
I had my licence, but when they called up the dvla they said there was a discrepancy - but wouldn’t say what it was!
Long story short - the dvla had changed my address (I had not moved) It was a completely different house up the road with the same postcode.
I had to get a new photo licence - my previous licence was one of the old ones. I refused to pay though, and they did waive that in the end.

I know you’ve found a new insurer but I’d be sending a formal complaint to Admiral and consider cc’ing the ombudsman. If you would have had an accident you could have ended up in all kinds of trouble, the police would have looked at it in black and white only I.e. driving without insurance.

I left admiral to go to esure, they have the doc upload portal, much more efficient.

im hoping as a goodwill gesture they will do the same with me, its possible they havent followe dthey own procedures in notifying me eg via post

im waiting for a call back as i went via their FB page and said i want to formally complain and they said they will call me back, stuck in a meeting at work and missed the call but they have left a message to say they will call me tomorrow. I would say its very dangerous to do such a thing over a picture of my license, fo rme im going to suggest that in the event the DVLA query something they should at the stage of applying for your polciy and have tick box that says you confirm they can obtain driver licence details from DVLA in the event of a query, prety much what i did for the new insurance comapny. if they need to they can use it and if not then they havent wasted money or time.

I hate to be the bad guy here, but if they can prove they have sent the emails to you then they have done nothing wrong. Its the method of communication you chose so you have to stick by that. Did you check your spam inbox to see if anything is there? As I say, sorry to be the bad guy and im not on their side at all! Also as for anyone commenting on no claims bonus certificates, isnt it all central? iv never had to send one through and when I have asked if I had to they replied by saying they could already see who my insurer was just by giving the old company I was with. Pretty sure its all on a central database. My brother had insurance cancelled as he accidentally put down he had more no claims bonus than he really had. They found out sharpish without him even letting them know.

I do know where your coming from I just think with something as serious as that then maybe a few more safeguards. I did tick correspondance and thats my fault as i thought it meant they would use those details to give out or sell and im going to be spammed to a inch of my life so i will check the mailbox but its a copy of my licence which i think it deserves my policy being cancelled, the consquencies of that if i had a accident makes me shudder thinking what if. and im lukcy they decided to let me know it was cancelled by letter as i could have still been driving round like it. the trouble with emails is they do end up in spam folders i just think a recorded letter (make the customer pay for it advising they have 7 days or the policy would be cancelled and extra £3.00 on my £49.00 admin fee isnt really going to make much difference but woudl have given me a chance to sort the problem out)

I have never had an insurance company ask for my (or my wife's) driving licence number. Even when I have used go compare etc I had not entered the number.

Suggest you flame Admiral on their Twitter account as other customers need to know what they are really like.

I always avoided them as they used to get a bad rep on MINI forums regarding factory fitted options on cars.

Does seem odd how you wouldn't receive the emails and text. Albeit. Admiral have promised me emails before and I don't get them.

Wouldn't they call though, regardless of what contact method you prefer.

What a bunce of w*****s, the guy you spoke to sounds a proper jobs worth as well. I'm so glad nothing happened to you/car whilst you had no insurance due to their stupid setup....it could have been nasty.

Glad you're sorted now ;)

You'll now have to declare that you've had a policy terminated now too, won't you?

I've been with esure for years, you get class 1 business cover as standard and each year they get close to cheaper quotes I get on comparison sites.

I was kind of thinking this same way while reading the OP posts. If you chose to only be contacted via email, then proceed to ignore said emails, you only have yourself to blame.

I'd be more angry with the DVLA rather than the insurance company. Admiral were only following procedure. They don't want to be legally insuring a car on the road, if the driver doesn't have a valid driving licence. In this case the OP did, but they weren't to know better as they tried contacting him, and he ignored their emails. Admiral have no choice really other than to cancel the policy.

If the OP didn't have a valid licence, then first time he went past an ANPR equipped traffic car, he'd be stopped and have the car seized. In this case, we'd all be saying `too right`, and `one less unlicensed driver off the road.

The DVLA are to blame. Take it up with them

Did they have your phone number?
yes had my phone number they apparently sent me a text (its a work phone so ive asked out BT department to check as they can see ingoing and outgoing) when i asked them they said to call every customer this happens too would be too costly and therefore that would ultimatley have to pass the cost onto the customer so thats why they dont do it.

It seems to me that they’ve met their obligations by contacting you through two separate channels - text and email. The emails reached you, but if you don’t check the content of your spam folder regularly that’s hardly Admiral’s fault.

take your point thats true, tbh honest i cant remember ticking a box to say only contact me via email and if i did ive assumed its for sales and marking bit like all the GDRP emails im getting at the moment. Hopefully they will offer me a goodwill gesture and not charge me the admin fee (thats all i want) its not as if i have lied or falsely declared anything to them its just a copy of the driving licence at the end of the day, my new insurer i sorted it out in literally 2 seconds so i havent been i ignoring or not wanting to it even though to the layman it may seem that way

I think you'll be lucky to get anything as a goodwill gesture from Admiral, as you've moved to another insurer. Maybe if you'd re-taken it out with them they might have waivered it.

Although you haven't lied, you didn't reply either. I know it went to your spam box, but that's not their fault.

Unless you can get to the bottom of why your licence keeps getting flagged, then there is not a great deal you can do. Maybe claim the costs against the DVLA if it's their error that has caused all this? If not, then you may just need to chalk it up as one of life's minor set-backs, and move on.

well im one lucky person, admiral have been on apologising for their behaviour and the way they have treated me, the lady said they have no followed their own procedures and they should called me and also she admitted that they didnt send a text or as many emails as the man said so they will sit with him for futher training. She also mentioned that i did not in fact tick a box that said email correspondance only.
All seems very strange i've said i had to go elsewhere and she said she will resintate the policy and that she will pay the other companies cancellation fees and offer £50 for putting me in that situation and 25% discount on next years policy as a way of apology, she did say thats not the way we treat customers and when i mentioned that he wouldnt reinstate it withou waiting 48hours she replied that shes looked at the policy and would have reinstated it straight away without waiting as this happens quite frequently. At least i guess they admitted to making a mistake and making me think i had done something i hadnt. She also said despite what the guy told me in event of an accident i would have been covered but I dont think i would have liked to have found out.

Good on them, I've never had to deal with Admiral when making a claim and whatnot but at least their call centre "sales" people are always extremely friendly and willing to help (with 4 cars, 5 drivers on a policy there can be quite a discussion!)
