Facelift Speed camera/Radar Detectors

CamSam on Android seems ok (apart from the Bedfordshire stretch of the M1 where it flags a camera on almost every gantry).

Oh forgot . I recently got thinkware dash cam that has speed cam alerts built in . So far quite accurate , haven’t tried an upload yet of new data so can’t comment on that . But if getting dash cam maybe u can kill 2 birds . I use the app I mentioned in previous post as I can tf between my other cars .

TomTom Speed Cameras or Waze apps on Google Play. Both are GPS based, i think detectors are illegal.

I have Waze running too - it is useful though to get audible alerts from CamSam too.

Waze is great to get a heads up of camera and/or Police ahead.
Dedicated radars are best I think for picking up a radar gun from furthest distance...but only if its being fired.
Technology always changing....if you are a serial speeder then do research on what's best available and maybe have it professional installed so its not so easily visible.

Detectors are pretty much useless in the UK and they're only really good for countries like the US that still use old radar tech.

If I remember correctly, 99.9% of UK police will use laser detectors and by the time you get a notification for those then it's already too late and they'll have your speed clocked. There's also a lot of false positives from the sensors picking up other vehicles on the road, shop doors, etc which will drive you crazy.

The only guaranteed way to avoid a mobile speed camera is a laser jammer which can easily be bought online for cheap, but they're very much illegal and will land you with a very very hefty fine if plod catches you with one fitted.

In my experience, Waze has always been the most accurate when it comes to speed cameras.

UK Police don't use Radar, I'm fairly certain that most forces are using the LTI20/20 or the newer model (can't remember the name)
The detector won't pick anything up until the trigger is pulled and if they are aiming at you, you've been caught.
My mates Dad had one years ago and it was annoying more than it was useful, would beep at every set of traffic lights

UK Plod all use lasers (even though slippage across the bodywork produces wild results). Thankfully, very few officers carrying this out now - all dependent on cameras or Talivan operators which are private contractors.

I would recommend a separate system not using your phone because even if your using Waze if you turn off the audio you won’t get alerts; if your using your phone on the dash then it could crash etc. Obviously it depends how concerned you are about them. I do lots of driving in areas I don’t know and have a road angel gem + which is great - I actually today ordered their new detector the road angel pure.

I prefer to have that separate detector there that’s clear and easy to see at all times; even if the beeps are annoying they are keeping me from points and fines.

I believe you used to be able to get 'scatterers' for laser detectors but I think the illegal !

When I had my Ghost fitted they tried to sell me a jammer for over a grand!!! I was intrigued until I heard the price.

I just added the speed camera POI then they come up on the VC.

Sorry @T-800 I'm being thick this early in the morning, but what have you added? Looks very hand to have.

Added speed camera locations to the My Audi POI.

Then downloaded them to the car.

Once in the car I updated it and added them to POI.

Once ticked they come up on Nav / VC

Do you have to pay for the files from pocketgpsworld?

Yes.

Been working with @DJAlix on an audible and visual prompt when approaching a camera site.

We have it working on the FL car and it works well.

@DJAlix will be starting a thread on this shortly explaining all.......

Great stuff, will hold off on buying a subscription for pocketgpsworld just yet then.

Got any sneak peaks @DJAlix? :sm4:

Anyone using one, any recommendations
I have a Snooper 4zero. Love it. They were selling them cheap on Amazon. You can update the static speed cameras and it covers all mobile ones

This was EXTREMELY helpful. I just coughed up to get the GPS data and uploaded to myAudi. Which is a terrible website and equally painful to log into in the car. But still, after I ran the import in the vehicle, all the cameras now show up on my MMI. Awesome. Thanks.

Did someone say there was a means of getting audible alerts? Any update there?

Posted in the A3 section last week...mcaddy app to speed up installing poi to the car. Just enter your pocketgpsworld credentials and it downloads the cameras and sorts out the formatting so you don't need to mess around uploading them to the Audi site..

----
This application downloads the latest Camera Database from PocketGPSWorld and builds a POI database, if present it will retain the database already on the target drive, replacing the Camera categories if present.

Currently the app will group cameras into 5 categories:-

  • Fixed - Gatso, Truvelo, Monitorn, RedSpeed
  • Mobile - Verified Mobile camera (safty camera partnersip) sites
  • Specs - Average Speed cameras
  • RedLight - Traffic Light cameras (some of which double up as speed cameras)
Latest version - v0.9.1 - https://github.com/mcaddy/audipoi/blob/master/Releases/SpeedCameraToPoi/v0.9.1.zip?raw=true

To install unpack the contents of the zip file into a folder of your choice and run SpeedCameraToPoi.exe

Once you’ve added them into your POI in my Audi then click send to car.

Once in your car select updates in the mmi and it will be downloaded into the car.

See #19 above.

Oh, so no easier than downloading .ov2 files directly from pocketgpsworld then if you still have to add them via myaudi website

Atleast on my PFL s3 I have to copy the files onto USB and plug into car. So for me process is..

Download csv or similar files from GPSworld
Upload each individually to Audi site
Run the Java app for it to create the files in audi format
Copy files to USB, plug into car and update.

Mcaddy app reduces the first 3 steps. So at least for PFL it helps :)

Ok I can now see how it would work for a USB update, for an update via Audi connect it's easier to download .ov2 and a .bmp, add them to the Audi tool and send them to the car as in post #19
