Windscreen smear? Rookie mistake ?

Morning every, I'm currently getting windscreen smear and I'm hoping you lot could help.

Basicly I washed my car on Thursday then done my windscreen like I normally do, soapy water on one of them squeegee then use the window vac to suck to water up.

I then sprayed g6 perfect glass onto half the screen, worked it around then buffed off with a cloth, and this is where I think I've gone wrong, the cloth I used has been used to apply my sonax bsd for about 6-7 months, I have 3 of thease cloths and always only use 2 so I decided to use of to buff the screen as I've been happy with the grip it has on the body

Thease cloths are washed with non bio after every wash and hung to dry. But I'm starting to think that when I've buffed it the cloth hasn't been 100% clear of sonax bsd even though it's been washed , fri sat sun and Monday I was up at 03:30 for work and with it being a damp night when I cleared the windscreen with the wipers it left a film that if I rubbed my finger on the screen you could see, if I turn the fans to the screen the film disappeared quite quickly So it's deffo on the outside. Now I'm on late shift if I use the washers you can see a film behind the wipe that vanishes quite quickly but I'd exspect that with the heat we've been having lately. 26 degree in may

I ran out of perfect glass so havnt been able to wash it with that again although I've tried wiping the blades. Washing the screen with soapy water and some malt vinegar.

I've ordered some new cloths and some g6 to try this weekend. If it stills smears I'll wash it again and fit some new blades. Then if I still smears I have no idea what I'll do


Anyone got any more tips on what I can try. I've heard G4 nano polish is quite good aswell and also to clay bar the screen but ideally I'd like to avoid the bar and leave it till last resort as the screen has a few scratches to start with and I don't want to add more

Clay the screen (don't if you really want to avoid this step) then clean it with Barkeepers Friend (costs a couple of quid from home bargains). Get the powder verison and mix into a paste and give the screen a good scrub.

Thanks for that, it's not that I don't want to clay it's the fact I've only ever used it once so havnt had much experience with clay and don't want to inflic any more scratches into the screen

If I do end up going down this route will plenty of soapy water do for lube??

Best window cleaner for me is Auto Finesse ''crystal'' glass cleaner.

Don't worry about claying the windscreen, it'd take quite a bit of effort to scratch the glass. When you have a new clay mitt they recommend you break it in on the windscreen first to take some of the edge of it so as not to damage the paint, so the glass is fine and pretty tough.

Depends on which clay bar you have, but the Bilt Hamber ones are fine with water. Other types then soapy water would be fine. Not tried it myself as yet but what about some cheap window cleaner like windowleen to act as a lube and cleaner at the same time.

The power glass cloth should get a lot of it off. Or try a glass polish like the G4 you mentioned as these have mild abrasives to properly get the rubbish off. I've got to say I hate cleaning glass as I find it to be one of the hardest things to get spot on.

Thanks for that. I'm gonna have a shot at cleaning the class and blades again. Hopfully it'll solve it. I'm still unsure weather the blades will be reuseable or not as they would have picked up some of the contamination from the screen but we shall see. If it doesn't solve it I'll pop up to halfrauds and get some clay and new blades.

Well I cleaned my windscreen again with the new towels then wiped the blades with some g6. Still the same. So off to halfords for some clay and new blades

Gtechniq glass polish will strip the bsd off easily isn't this QD full of silicon hence its strong hydrophobic properties

That's my next step. Done the clay bar. Seemed to help but still isn't back to normal. So I'll have to get some glass polish ordered

Thanks for the heads up. I've never used it.

It's the same as the g6 perfect glass. You don't really need to plaster the screen in fluid.

The clay bar has helped but it still smears a little so hopfull this will sort it, hopfully don't have to use my wipers untill it arrives as I don't want to contaminate new blades ( binned the old ones before trying as I though it would be solved lol )

Yeah Gtechniq glass polish is prone to dusting mate and it will clean far better than Gtechniq glass cleaner

I've had a look online and it recommends buffing off with a damp cloth. Maybe this will help reduce the dusting. If not I'm sure the dust will blow away or wash away.

Update on this. Hasn't driven in rain since but today I did and still smearing. Don't know weather to try another shot of polish or just go straight to bar keepers friend.

Or just get a new screen as it's scratched to hell and a lot of small chips. Although I don't really want too as we all know the seal will never be the same again
