Good evening all,

Hope your all well

I want/need to change the gearbox oil/filter on my S4 auto.

Is this a job that can be done by myself or is it a job that needs to go into a garage?

How much would the oil and filter likely cost, I've only had a single quote at moment for £400, seems alot to me?

Many thanks in advance
Karl

Hi there
Was actually looking into this and was told by a few folk that changing the gearbox oil at a higher mileage has risks if not done earlier on
So I left mine as it was

I read loads about this and decided the best opinions were to change the oil ASAP ...... my own tiptronic has about 140,000 kms on it (90,000 miles) and i had the oil changed by my local Audi-dealer ....... as surprisingly, they were by far the cheapest quote I received as specialist tools are needed to do the job (which the audi dealers will already have) and the only oil recommended is only available via Audi dealers at a reasonable cost (although still not cheap) ...... total cost for my own A4 Cabrio 2.5tdi tiptronic was about €240 inclusive of the oil itself which accounted for a major part of this amount. It is NOT a simple case of dropping the oil and then emptying the new stuff in > as first the old stuff has to be sucked out using the correct tool, then has to be pumped back in using another correct tool - but if you do this, then make sure the filter is changed at the same time as that part is very important and isnt actually very expensive.

I think it is the multitronic that must have regular services. The Quattro is not scheduled by audi to need one but they did mine 3years ago at 100k cost about 150 with ATF but no filter. The bill says multitronic service cos they have no provision for the tiptronic in their menu.Seems better and worth doing at that price

when at the Audi dealer, they informed me that mine had a TIPTRONIC gearbox rather than the MULTITRONIC ????? he was insistent that my own gearbox will last very well (especially with the new oil change), but that the multitronics have been a bit of a nightmare to keep going. My own 2.5tdi cabriolet has been re-mapped as well and goes like a scalded cat ! ..... standard was 163hp, but im reliably informed it is now close to 220hp and the gearbox has not had any problems with the extra power at all (& I get loads of miles per gallon as the main bonus ;) )

Tiptronic means its a Quattro and the box is stronger and many wouldnt bother .Mines standard 180 but seems they can handle a lot more. The multi is 163.My son is looking for an S4 and says the boxes are still suspect until the later B8s

Thank you all for the info/replies, been very busy and I'm now looking at getting gear box oil/filter done at end of this month, prob get rear axle oil done at same time depending on quotes, will ring a few dealers and indys for quotes over next few week's,
many thanks
Karl
