Black Edition 1.4 TFSI or 2.0 TFSI

Be interesting to see how this recent trend of putting small heavily turbocharged engines in (relatively) big cars progresses longer term. The engine is obviously being worked pretty hard in this configuration - are cars like this likely to last 100k+ miles?

The size of the car is not as relevant as its weight and the current A4 is relatively light compared to previous generations. The A3 / A4 difference may be due to due to longer gearing too. I don't feel the 1 4 is very stressed in the Avant but time will tell. It's on a 24 month lease so not a big issue for me!

I'd agree - I don't think it's stressed, it never feels/sounds/gives the impression it's stressed - it just needs to be in the right gear and lets you know when it isn't...

Thanks for all the replies on here. It’s been great reading them through and listening to people’s different options and thoughts, all been very helpful.

I’ve decided to go for the 1.4T and have now placed an order on the following, really hope it’s as good as I’m expecting it to be... roll on September.

Efficiency is pretty poor at the moment as well, struggling to break 30mpg, but to be fair it's mainly stop start London driving, with one London - Gloucestershire run. In the next couple of months got another London - Gloucestershire, a London - Gloucestershire - Woolacombe - Gloucestershire - London run, and a London - Glasgow - Leeds - Broadstairs - London run, so hoping it'll loosen up and get less thirsty after that little lot.

Max it does is about 600 miles on motorway runs with cruise control 60-65... ive done something similar and that was the most i could squeeze out of the tank. Struggled to hit anything over 55mpg.

Yeah, just did a trip to the South Coast from London - few miles of stop start at either end, 60 miles or so at 70-80 on the motorway and the DIS reckoned 41.4 mpg which I'm happy with.

Thanks mate. Looking at a September delivery, which actually works fine as that’s when I plan on handing my Merc back that is on PCP.

This one will be on a lease which I’ve never done before, but seen as I always seem to hand my car back at the end of a PCP deal i thought lease would be a better most cost effective way to go.

Can’t wait to get it though, read so much on here about them and looked at so many photos too... slightly unsure about going from 2.0 diesel in my Merc to a 1.4T petrol but based on what I’ve read it’s like a second slower to 60 (does that matter) and won’t go as fast, but hey we have speed limits haha. So I’m sure it will be fine.

Thanks again

Its very much the same, except PCP allows you the option to purchase car at the given price whereas lease doesnt.. thats about it tbh.

Its not much slower than a C220d and will keep up with it (tried and tested).
Ofcourse on a straight road its different otherwise there isnt much imo. So it should do the job sufficiently

Ah okay on the PCP and Lease. Would never buy at the end, the money involved would bankrupt me haha!

Awesome info on the 1.4T v the C220d, always good to hear from someone with experience. Happy to hear it’s not much different generally... would never worry about straight line speeds just more getting going and if needing to pickup speed say to overtake or on motorway. Like you said I’m sure will be great.

I've got 660 miles on a new 1.4 manual, and came from a MY15 A3 1.4 Sportback. The A4 does need working a lot more, the A3 you could basically stay in second from 2mph to almost 30 if you really wanted to, anything below 10mph in 2nd and the A4 starts to complain a little. Hoping this may still loosen up a bit. Also needs to be dropped a gear (or two) for overtaking a lot more than the A3. It's not a problem, just takes getting used to.

Quick update - another 200 miles on it and it's loosened up a lot more, and economy has got a lot better - did South London to Camber and back last weekend, 42 mpg, and don't need to drop back to 1st in traffic nearly as much.

Camber, don't get me started, spent many a day flying kites from the sand bank as a lad when you could go on it. Sand used to get everywhere, in your food etc. We stay away from the place now though...

Yeah, you have to time it right or you sit in traffic for hours. The 4yo and 2yo love it though...

Has been that way ever since I can remember, sometimes the queues nearly got to Rye...
