I lambasted my Councillor last week pointing out how much tax I am being raped for on the new car. Their inadequate response was -
'The harsh weather has affected road surfaces. However, in defence of the Borough, £50 million. is being spent over 5 years to repair and resurfaced roads and pavements in Barnet. We have perhaps the longest road network of any London Borough; to repair every one of these thorofares is a tough challenge. Neighbouring authorities’ roads are no better and often worse.
The tax/expenses you list in the purchase of your motor car are raised by HMG, not Barnet, and disappear into HM Treasury. Rate Support Grant, ie the funds provided by HM Treasury to local authorities are doled out in decreasing quotas annually. Barnet, considered a ‘rich’ authority, receives less than half per capita than, say, Camden, a ‘poor’ authority. The disparity with central boroughs is even starker. As it is, most Barnet’s income derives, nowadays, from council tax which we strive to spend thriftily.
Thank you for troubling to write in.'
Not adequate at all in my mind and, in any event, he is unlikely to be thanking me for my response any time soon........
