Hi all,

A few weeks ago I discovered my steering rack was leaking massively on the passenger side. Gushing out. I then bought a second hand rack from a breaker which was in good condition, no leaks previously (checked behind gaiters) however less than 500 miles later it is leaking again, passenger side is gushing out again and drivers side shows leakage.

The first week after replacing the rack, I kept a close eye on fluid level and retightened everything and it all seemed fine.

As soon as I fill the reservoir up it empties pretty much instantly.

Am I missing something that would be causing this to keep ruining them or just a case of bad luck on the 2nd rack?

It’s a bam engine for reference.

Thanks

Stacey

I think it’s a bad luck and second hand things not the best option, especially when you looking for a steering rack. I know the new rack is not the cheapest but worth it.

You can get them reconditioned fairly cheaper than new ones

Hi, I've had a reconditioned steering rack fitted to my AMK in June 2017 (£235 + fitting + vat), no problems yet. There was obviously a problem with my origional one that was fitted, as the steering wheel was never quite spot on after numerous wheel alignments. It is now!!

And I spent about double that replacing all mine with original/TPS set over a year/2 ago - I think that was with labour or maybe not, I cannot remember. The receipts are buried away somewhere.

too much steering fluid? full quantity is between 0.7-0.9 litres
also old gaskets, if been dry long, might blow out
or your pump puts too much pressure to rack but Im not certain if this is possible at all on a3/s3

I had replace mine at 55k, the reconditioned one from Euro Car Parts failed suddenly about 8k later, just after the two-year warranty expired!

I think they’re just not very good racks.

I sold the car as spares or repairs. Had enough of the issues :thumbs up:
