Hi all,

I am currently considering purchasing a 2017 1.4 TFSI A3 S-line saloon s tronic. It's a great looking car, but I recently narrowly avoided getting stung when I almost went for a 1.6 Diesel without knowing the full facts about Dieselgate, so I am a little hesitant to complete the purchase without getting some feedback from users of that engine.

I have found online some reports of excessive oil consumption with some 1.4 and 2.0 litre TFSIs. Some disappointed drivers and mechanics are pretty strong in their advice that the TFSI engine should be avoided as a result. I understand this problem is not that widespread, but when it occurs can be a real pain to resolve.

I'd be really grateful if drivers of the 1.4l TFSI could let me how they have found the engine to perform, particularly regarding oil consumption?

Is this a problem I need to worry about?

The is the 8L forum, so a moderator will probably move it for you. My work colleague has a 2.0 tsi Passat and that uses a lot of oil. 1 lite every 1500 miles or similar.

And no excessive oil usage, if we are talking the 140/150ps version, I've ever heard of and mine required only one top up in the three and a bit years I had it for...

Is a 2017 car not the 1.5 rather than 1.4?

Hi Ken,

It's definitely a 1.4, (1,395 CCs to be precise), meaning it's the older engine, probably manufactured in 2016 but placed in a 2017 registered car. I've read that the newer 1.5 TFSI that was introduced in 2017 is marginally more efficient, but most of the stats for the performance of both are identical. Would be interested to know if anyone has any views how the 1.4 and 1.5 TFSIs compare and if there is any noticeable difference?

My old 1.4COD engine didn't use a drop of oil.

I suspect the ones that do weren't run in properly.

funnily enough I have just put my first top up of oil in mine (I was previously misreading the dipstick somehow!) - I used approx. 500ml after 18 months and approx. 7-8000 miles from new which I feel is quite reasonable
