Hi,

Firstly i should tell you that my car is an Audi S3 8P 57 plate with 66000 on the clock, now down to business.
For the past couple of weeks i've had misfire's on my car, they were quite bad and really noticeable so i plugged my car into vagcom and got live data that it was misfiring on cylinder 3 just before the turbo kicked in pretty much in each gear, i took the bluefin off and tried it then, now it wasnt as bad as before with the bluefin but over time it was getting worse and more noticeable. After i came back from holiday i'd had enough so i went to euro car parts and bought some NGK laser platinum PFR7S8EG for £38 as i had NGK in the old S3 8L, i had read that for some people these don't work but thought id give it a go regardless. So on wednesday night me and my mate changed them, took the coil packs out to find cylinder 1 & 4 had dried water marks on them and cylinder 2 & 3 had oil marks on them. We looked inside the cylinder to find no trace of water in 1&4 and a drop of oil so in 2 & 4 (which i understand is a leak from the Cam Cage or something along those lines but one problem at a time please) after the cylinders were cleaned and i cleaned the coil packs with electrical cleaner we pulled out the plugs.
Now when i had my car serviced at Worcester Audi they told me that the plugs had not been changed according to their records and when my mate who i should mention is a mechanic took the plugs out, he seems to think they were the originals from the factory and was amazed.
They had V.W printed on the side and were bosch but they were very old from the looks. We replaced them with the NGK's and the difference was amazing on standard setup, the engine felt so smooth and revved really nice and actually felt better than when i purchased the car with 43000 on the clock.
So the next day i wanted to see what it would go like with the Bluefin installed and i was amazed it pulled so much better than it has ever done, i really was pleased and wondered how bad those plugs must have been for it to perform like this. Then the misfires started to come back so i kept driving but then the engine management light started to flash, now i had this before when it was misfiring prior to replacing the plugs but it had always gone off after 5 seconds, this time it stayed on even after turning off the engine and back on.

So today i have plugged it into Vagcom and cleared the fault code and went for a live data run and sure enough it was misfiring on cylinder 3 again but this time it was missing a lot more, before with the old plugs it would detect 6 or 7 misfires on cylinder 3 when accelerating and then refresh the counter back to zero. Today it was going from 0 to 27 misfires on the counter and then refreshing back to zero. I've now taken off the Bluefin and reverted it back to standard and there are no misfires at all now so all is good.

So my question to you fine people is, is my car misfiring with the Bluefin installed because it doesnt get on with the plugs and i should go buy the Bosch OEM ones, could it be the fact that now the plugs are fixed when i ask for more power from the Bluefin its showing up that the Coil packs are also weak and on there way out (i don't know if these have ever been changed from new), could it be the injectors which i would hope not as i always use the best super unleaded and use petrol cleaner occasionally or could it be the map is a bad map or had a bad install.

I do plan on going to Revo Stage 2+ next year as i already have a complete exhaust system, just need the CAI and HPFP but i want to get this sorted before i even look at that.

Thanks Guys & Girls

The usual cause of misfires is down to the plugs(which you've now changed),and the coilpacks.

A remap, will accentuate any issues with either.

I only ever use stock plugs on mine, changed every 10 000 miles or less.

Did the coils go back in the same cylinders or could they've got mixed up?
If you've changed the plugs then I'd of said coil packs next.
Seems very common when mapped for it to highlight misfires due to extra boost etc.

quick and easy way to check

change coil pack 3 for coil pack one

go for a drive get it to miss and then check what number is is missing on.
id say coil pack tho as you have flashing eml.

The easiest way of determining that if the fault lies with coil pack 3 is to move said coil pack to another cylinder.

If the miss fire/problem moves with it, you've found your answer.

Your plugs are the correct ones - no problem there.

edit* bez beat me to it... ah well.:meeting:

Thanks guys, to be honest i was gonna change that particular coil pack next, i know the spark plugs are the correct spec but certain peoples cars are apparently reacting different to NGK / Bosch so i'll change the coil packs next sometime this week but i'll check first to see if it makes a difference on any other cylinder.
I'll report back later in the week, thought id start this thread incase other people have issues like this, i know its an ignition fault but wanted to know your feedback on different spark plugs.

Oh yes and the coil packs did go pack into each cylinder they came from originally so it looks likely that could be a helping factor.

Cheers gents.

I'd change all coilpacks in one go tbh. Once one of them goes, the rest tend to follow soon after unless the 2.0 tfsi lump is vastly different from 1.8t. Its a pricy preventative measure, but worth doing if you never want to deal with coilpack issues while you own this car.

99.9% coil pack issue , I and many others have had this before,if you can afford it stick a full set on

Flip me s3's really like their coil packs and plugs! Happened to me as well! @Marshy gave me a great link for some upgraded coilpacks which I would recommend. They are a nice red colour as well lol.

From experience I wouldn't use the 8's again
Known for misfires and fouling up pretty easy.

Stick the Denso's in it as a lot are using them with no issues reported as far as i know

People say every 10k.
I will be going every 20k or 2 years unless I have misfire.

I’ve just replaced my standard sparks with ngk 7 on a stage 2 bluefin map, will monitor for misfires. Concerned to see I had oil in cylinder 2 and 3 and cylinder 1 has some sort of corrosion on the top (as attached)

Does anyone know if these actually improve the car or just look nice???

They look nice....even the shockingly expensive Okada coilpacks make only a tiny percentage gain at maximum rpm.

Good advice, looks like 90 quid wasted, just need good plugs, decent fuel and a good map, never done me no harm

If the OP needs coilpacks (based on the outcome of his testing), then the best advice I can give is to swap all 4 out at once and be done with it. The reason I was suggesting the R8 coilpacks is that they're actually cheaper than the OEM black ones ... https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-brand/ecs-tuning/oem-black-ignition-coil-pack-set-2-0tfsi-2-0tsi/

Also available at your local Eurocarparts for £117 over this weekend with Easter discount code.

Do you know what the corrosion is from on my previous post?

Well if they are cheaper ill get them but for now no misfires with a stage 2 bluefine map and ngk 7s and done 15,000km on them

If one of my coil packs fail, I replace all 4 but keep the 3 'good ones' as spares just in case I have one fail at a time where I can't get hold of 4 new ones in a hurry and a quick swap will keep me going.

Almost a year to reply to the thread. Impressive

Well it took a year for me to do the mileage to tell you how the plugs performed
