Had my s3 over a year now and has just passed over 100k. I had to replaxe the rear diff last year at some expense! I was wondering if there would be any more expected expensive parts that could go on me. I believe the rear diff is probably the most expensive part to go bar the engine. I don' want to sell but couldn't afford another part to go costing a bomb. Or do I spend and replace the clutch and rempap and hope all will be well haha

Most things on an Audi are very expensive as you know but i would say good maintance is crucial and the parts that are classed as wear n tear should be changed out on a regularly. There is a good post on maintance on top off the S3 section might be worth a look

What was wrong with your rear diff if you don't mind me asking? And did you replace it a new or a second hand diff?

Just asking as mine is whining and I'm looking at options to repair/replace it.

I had to do my diff at 60k so 100k is not bad
Rob
My thinking was with the expense of changing it and the amount of people that have had trouble it wasnt worth the risk of putting another duff one in , new was £3600 inc VAT so not cheap, Labour was a couple of hundred.
You can partially strip them down but not completely, i sent mine off to a LR specialist and he said you cant tell if its gears or bearings by looking at it and as its not possible to completely strip them it wasnt worth messing about. you could shop about, depending on the age of your car the diff in a Ford Kuga, Volvo X60 and a skoda of some sort were all the same if i remember correctly.

Well done on passing 100k

Mines gone through that as well but realistically very little of the car other than the diff, body shell and crank have done that mileage.

Milage is funny thing, we sort of base the life of the car on it but really it's immaterial. In days gone buy when cars died of rust after 5 years and exhausts lasted 2 years, clutch 50k and and engine 75k your average Morris marina or ford cortina had a pretty accurate life span mapped out.
Today a car is likely to be scrapped because A/someone paid you to do it or B/its owner just thought it was out of date.
Times change, my car is coming up to 70k and i was thinking its time to chop it in........but then i thought why ? OK so its cost me £4k this year, to chop it in for a new one would cost me £25k, TBH if i had to put a new engine, gearbox, another dif, wheels brakes and dozen other bits on it.it's still cheaper than chopping it in and the fact is i will not have to do any of that anyway.

My main interest is bikes, they don't have this milage stigma that cars have, my Laverda Jota will do 140mph, its 38 years old and god knows what the mileage is, who cares ? I did 100k miles on My Yamaha R1 and in that time it had a clutch....and 50 oil changes ( ever 2k miles)
Look after your car and it will last as long as you want it too, don't skimp on the oil, tackle problems head on as soon as poss, don't let them develop and don't try and chase the latest thing.....you will never get it because it's built in out of date from the day you bought it.

my car is past 100k and i had to replace the prop-shaft last year after blowing it up on track.
being a face lift model you can't buy any parts separately so had to buy the whole thing at some big expense!
Just keep on top of regular servicing

Audi told me i needed a prop shaft at £1200 because the rubber drive coupling had split, bought one from Germany for £130.00 Just because Audi UK don't import things dont assume they are not available. Bottom line is Audi dont make much , they just assemble other peoples bits so all these bits are available from the individual manufacturers.

Did you get a part number for it? or where did you purchase it from?
I didn't mind paying it as both donuts were goosed and the centre bearing was so bad you could bend the prop shaft 120 degrees so was proper goosed.

It came from "All german parts" in Leeds by mail order. Guys name was Jason and knew exactly what i wanted as he sells loads.

Mines done 105K. Had a new Steering Rack (common fault), top mounts and clutch at about 95K.

In which case its not going to reach 50k let alone 100k.

Drive it till it blows up then worry about it :)

Mine did just that... injector started dribbling @ 110k and put a hole through piston number one. Probably worth while people having injectors tested at 100k or replaced - I have heard a few S3's that have died due to injector failure now.
