Looking at a 3.0 TDI but is the bitdi better?

Hi guys.
I currently have a 2.7tdi A4 b8 avant.
I am looking a A6 but would appreciate some advice on which engine spec is more favourable.
I really want a 3.0 TDI with quattro but have seen you can get 245bhp then 313 in the bitdi.
Has anyone got opinions on these options?
I have around 20k to spend

Have experience of the 245ps was very economical and mapped to 290, still economical. But the biturbo is quicker depends what you want

I've got a 233bhp 3.0tdi b7 mapped to 270/550nm and a standard 340bhp/700nm bitdi SQ5 plus and both are very good. Fuel consumption is similar, the SQ is quicker - not massively (although it's a slightly heavier car), SQ sounds a lot better with the trick exhaust, even better if you add a kufatec modulator.
Once out of warranty the SQ will probably be getting remapped, around 380/800 at stage 1 for all bitdi's, which should make quite a difference. If you can track down a nice bitdi in budget that's the I'd go for.

I found mine at just over your budget off a 14 plate, S line with Tech pack. So shop about & you should find one.

Another plus for the bitdi is the tiptronic box, some of the later single turbos had stronic - I think!!!

Sport diff is great, standard on the SQ5 plus but not available on the SQ5, are you sure all A6 bitdis have it?

Sports diff is not standard on the BiTDI.

I have owned a 2.0 Ultra, had a 272 for an afternoon test drive and have owned a BiTDI A6 for 6 months. The extra grunt in the BiTDI imo is not that noticeable, maybe once you get over 100+ mph you see a difference but in my own experience driving 0-60 the acceleration of both cars is great and you'll love either. BiTDIs have a ZF 8 speed torque converter gearbox and the 272s have an Audi 7-speed DSG. Again in my experience both a great boxes to drive with, I don't really have a preference for driving but side with the ZF box in terms of reliability, not that there are many issues documented with the A6/7 S-Tronic, but the ZF8 speed has been shown to be a very durable box in lots of other cars.

Other than that, the big difference is the active sound in the BiTDI i.e. fake sound. It's something some will love, some hate and some couldn't care less. I like it personally as it gives the car a sound which matches the performance. Accelerations sound great and it gives the BiTDI a sense of theatre which you don't get in a 272.

That's pretty much it in terms of difference. I was faced with this choice when buying new and chose to stump up an extra £2500 or so for the BiTDI and I don't regret it. If buying second hand I wouldn't hesitate to choose a 272 if it had a much better spec than a similar BiTDI. In short the BiTDI is a nice upgrade but not essential over the 272 imo.

Happy to stand corrected - looked again at the Audi bumpff & you fellas are right, it's not standard, but yet another optional extra The car I chose has it fortunately.

As above post, day to day driving experience between the the 272 & BiTDI would be negligible I suspect. I just fancied the extra bit of woosh for pressing on - if our congested roads ever give the chance.

Good luck with the search. Best bet is to get down to a couple of dealers & drive as many of the cars as you can to get an idea of spec/options you can live with/without.

If you go for the bitdi I'd recommend getting one with ADS, that way you can set the sound to be on all of the time, not just when gearbox is in 'sport'. Kufatec make a small gizmo which plugs into the control unit under the boot floor which lets you adjust the sound to how you like it - a bit like a graphic equalizer.

Alternatively, fit a catback exhaust. There are numerous youtube offerings that show what can be achieved. At the end of the day it is V6 engine and a catback is enough to hear the engine warble over the diesel chitter chatter.

The problem is finding a off the shelf catback

I had a 3.0 TDI as a courtesy car a while back - very disappointing. No grunt, poor mpg and sounded like an old massey 135!
Fast forward 6 months and I bought the 3.0 BiTdi - really nice to drive, oodles of power and sounds great.

I needed the fuel consumption otherwise I would have bought an S4 - I get around 30mpg on short trips - 40mpg on long trips.

I have an A7 245 bhp mapped to around 290bhp..

I've had the rear boxes deleted and straight pipes added in there place, & theres zero difference in engine noise.

I still have my Dpf in place and a cat if the Tdi's have one???

The only advantage to deleting the back boxes is you can put some nice fat tail pipes on to fill out the diffuser cut outs and the back boxes are heavy as!!! So your saving fuel

I wanted a BITDI A7 mainly for the Active exhaust but all in my budget ( under £20000 ) where poverty spec, where as my 245bhp A7 is a mega Hi spec'd one so i went for toys instead of power and active exhaust..

Im still researching exhaust upgrades to achive better sound, you can retro fit the Audi Active exhaust system using a mix of 2nd exhaust and new switches and so forth, total cost around £1000..thats to run the Active exhaust Via ADS on your dash..

You can go aftermarket active but that works off a key fob...

Unfortunately 23k is my limit
The one I have seen is not the facelift and is a 14 plate. I'm just concerned the maintenance bills and repair bills will be massive.
Looking at 2.0 190ps avants now but they don't have quattro and will probs be rather sluggish but will return good mpg.
I'm very undecided. As you can tell lol

I’m just over 50k now and touch wood the tip tronic works great, still very smooth.
I’m not aware of any major work that’s needed on these bar the usual servicing, brakes, the auxiliary belt looks quite complex on the front so Imagine that could be costly.
I wouldn’t worry over the mileage, everything should wear well.

Doesn't have pan roof or memory seats or climate in the rear

And the other has covered 62k but is £24k
Has everything I want but is more money and more miles

No, has long as you have full service history these engines are good for 200k plus and with the ZF auto box.... would look at the ZF website for service intervals (Audi say its maintenance free)??

Costs about £800 Or you can fit for 350 to 400 ish.

The oil is expensive and there' 9 ltrs of it. Think loads don't get the oil changed.

It is expensive, but compared with a replacement box it’s cheap and I wouldn’t use AUDI I would go to a ZF agent cos it has to be cycled ( the oil) via a computer Programme

Not sure about the Audi will never have done one bit, my A7 ( 7 speed S Tronic ) is on 88ooo milies, and has had two gearbox oil services, one @ 38K and one @ 79K both times done @ Audi main dealers, i bought it on 85000 miles..

The s + multi-tronic have service schedules - 38k iirc. The Tiptronic is sealed for life according to Audi. Hence the comment above about Audi techs being clueless.

Confusingly, Tiptronics in the hybrids, according to the general service schedules in my handbook shows service intervals of 58k !?! I'll grab a photo of the page later & post it. Makes no sense.

My BiTDI is at 52k, I'm considering getting the box serviced at 58k, but suspect it will invalidate my extended warranty as Audi don't see the need to service the box for my model. Will have to do some further research in the coming months.

the sound, the speed, it's a beast.
The wife also fell madly in love with it so we deafo going that way.
The one we drove was a saloon but there isn't any avants locally.
May be a trip south to go see one next week.

BiTdis when I was looking were a rare beast, took me 9months to find one with the Diff and ACC but had to compromise on colour.

Glad the drive was good, the thrust they’ve got is addictive, both my boys have a saying for it “daddy goooo”

Adaptive cruise control, parts of the tech plus pack, expensive option at £2700 originally, acc is rather good once you use it, it’s hard going back, especially in traffic where it will stop and go for you. Easy to spot option on the adverts as it will look like it has front fog lamps, those are infact radar domes, fogs are built into the headlamps on the C7

I love my bitdi allroad and wouldn’t have any smaller engine. I’ve only looked at the s6 because I don’t do many miles anymore so I don’t need the diesel.
Mine has most extras except night vision and lane assist.
Great cars and won’t be changing anytime soon.
