My wonderful wife has recently undergone back surgery and is now struggling to get in and out of the A3 with the seats being quite low. As much as it pains me I may have to look into something more suitable to her needs and was thinking along the lines of a Q3 1.4 Tfsi. I have this engine in the A3 and it is an absolute peach but I’m not overly confident how it will perform in a much heavier car.
Have any of you guys any experience of the Q3 with this engine and if so I’d very much appreciate your thoughts.
I have considered going back to the black stuff but I’d rather not if possible.
My only other option is to pop into Argos and buy a booster seat or possibly P/X the wife. This would be a last resort though as I am quite fond of her.

Sorry to hear of your problems. If short term I would go down the booster seat option. If longer term PX. I really do not get SUVs!

P/X the wife for a younger model with less miles on the clock lol.

My missus doesn't have a bad back, yet she struggles to get out of mine. I've lost count of the times I've had to push her a$$ out the door:wink:

I don't have experience of the Q3 but I would have thought it would be fine with the 1.4 engine (actually, are the new ones 1.5 now?)
As you say it is a lovely engine.
I'm not looking to change my A3 but if I was I would definitely look at a Q3 with that engine.

This made me laugh! Some of you will know that my wife died after a short illness at the end of 2015. One of our final conversations was about finding myself a younger more reliable model, playing to my car obsession. Having had a few test drives over the last year or so I can honestly say stick with the original if you can and make adaptations. Younger more agile models may be easy to get in and out of and can be great fun ...but if I could have the original back I would!

I'd say a younger model would be a tighter fit but it can be quite random that theory, and could disappoint, have a test drive first !

Definitely lots of test drives. Need to ensure they corner well and don't have problems with their big end.

Cant comment on the 1.4 / 1.5 petrol specifically in the Q3. But I have driven the same engine in the Q2 and in the Seat Ateca and its a great little unit. It performs well with 1-2 people in the car and has a decent turn of speed for motorway driving etc. We tried to order a Seat Ateca with the 1.4 but the build / wait time was too long for our needs. We actually ended up buying the 2.0 Petrol DSG Q3 as it has a bit more torque and are very happy with it. For a 2.0 4X4 petrol it doesnt drink too much petrol and continues to surprise me just how quick it is, even when compared to my S3. If you are used to the 1.4 I would think you would be very happy with the same engine in the Q3 as its not that much heavier, just taller and mm longer and wider.

Its a lovely car, large enough, and tall enough to give you good visibilitty and very practical. Yet small enough to drive and park safely in town without over hanging any parking bay lines which leaves cars prone to dings and dents etc. Good driving position in the Q3 and a pleasant place to be. The wife loves it very much.

You will find a lot more info on the Q3 owners forum not necessarily on the Audi Sport pages.

Enjoy.

Sorry I just don't get SUVs. They are slower, less fuel efficient, arguably less good looking. They have however become very popular with 'yummy mummies ' and the elderly. Part of the difficulty getting out of Audis are the sports seats, maybe the OP could try getting his 'strife' to sit in the back temporarily? My old Mum finds this much easier.

Not had a Q3, but had a VW Tiguan (Same car) for 3 years. They are really nice cars TBH. Mine was the R-Line 170 TDI with manual gearbox.

With the R-Line you got sporty suspension, which to be fair felt quite sporty and chuckable. I'd still attack roundabouts with commitment.

Being quite heavy (compared to the A3) you will feel the engine struggle compared to the same unit in a lighter car. It never returned great mpg, but averaged around 40mpg on long easy runs.

I have a bad back, and the higher seating position an getting in and out was great. Plus, you do get a better view while driving. I'd deffo have another one, but maybe go for the 240TDI, which will be far better.

Looked at the Tiguan and frankly a Passat Estate is a far better proposition IMHO. Having to climb up in an SUV is not good with a bad back. You just reverse the problem with a saloon. Easy to get out of SUV harder to get in ??? Wtf . As for space, check the numbers, Tiguan has less boot space, less legroom just more unnecessary headroom!

Sorry still don't get it!

I’m 100% with you on this one but needs must I’m afraid.
At least the “strife” meets both the SUV stipulations in that she’s an elderly yummy mummy (well in my eyes anyway).
As for her sitting in the back, it’d take a braver man than me to suggest that to her, if you’re up to the challenge, please feel free....I’ll be down the pub though.:scared2:

The Tiguan isn't as high as some SUV, so you don't have to climb into them. The seats are at bum level when stood up, so you generally just slide over into them. And as I do have a bad back, it made getting in and out of much easier than it is my current S3. It was literally a right pain in the back at times getting in and out of my old R8.

Yes a Passat Estate would be more practical. Faster for the same engine. More luggage space etc. But people need different cars for different reasons. I do a lot of walking over the lakes, so going back to a small SUV would make sense as I could take it places (pot holed tracks) that I won't take my S3. Some need an SUV for back issues. Some prefer the higher driving position. While others see them as a fashion accessory

Not saying I'm going to run out and buy one, but to the OP who's wife has a bad back. The Q3/Tiguan would be ideal for `their` situation.

I have a better solution. I used to have A/S5 cabriolets. It's easy to fold roof down to allow people with back problems to walk in and out of the car. Actually works superbly well. Worth a try and far better than an SUV. A hoist and a Pano Roof is another option although less practical.

We’ve had a look at an R-Line Tiguan and they are very impressive but a big car on the whole. The Q3 would be better but the interior is now a bit dated compared to the Tiguan.
In all honesty I’m loathed to get rid of the A3, it’s such a pretty, well proportioned car and I still give it an admiring glance every time I walk up to it.
The more I think about it the more I’m coming round to the idea of just sticking her in the boot....!

Not quite so practical when she needs to get in and out when is tipping it down though. Great though if the OP is about to move to Spain.

Yeah, the current Q3 is based on the old Tiguan chassis. The new Q3 coming out will be the same size as the current Tiguan.

Once you get used to them, they are really nice cars. Just make sure you get one with a decent sized engine in. Being under powered in a much heavier car will make driving one a right pain.

My wife just bought a new Q3 Black edition. 2litre TFSI engine. Cracking looking thing (Blue with black alloys), much easier to get in and out of than my old S3 Saloon, and lovely interior and seats etc. Well worth a trial run. Not as fuel economic as people have said, but does look the business, more head space, inside and high driving position that the missus loves

You’re absolutely right, the Black Edition is a cracking looking car. We’ve seen one in camouflage green and it is stunning. Didn’t take it for a test drive at the time because it was an automatic and I was really after a manual box but after a few words of wisdom from some fellow forum members I might just have a change of heart.
Do you mind me asking how your wife is getting along with the S-Tronic?
I’m open to all opinions and advice.

lol. I had the RSQ3 for a day and it was one of the worst cars I've ever driven. I really think Beemer wins in this market. The X3 looks and feels better in every single way.

that single oval pipe is such a let down though, we regularly do work for someone who has one...and every time I see it....
the black edition Q3s that have recently come about are real head turners imo, especially on the 20"s

It felt a lot slower than my S3, and probably is (haven't looked at book figures) due to the weight. But it wasn't really the performance as to why I didn't like it. The interior was just uninspiring, the exterior looked like a deformed turtle, and the ride was uncomfortable. The only thing it really had going for it was it was higher up, but you could get a Hyundai 4x4 or a Volvo XC40/60/90 which would give you exactly the same bonus.

As with most us men we have our ways and means of getting the result we really want.
