I have had Audi UTR front and rear cameras fitted to my S4. The system seems pretty good with clear pictures and the link to the phone straight forward. This is the first tome I have had dash cams so don’t have anything else to compare it too. have two queries?

How do you get the parking location to work automatically? It is turned on but doesn’t seem to,automatically record where you have parked.

When parked the cameras start working when ever something moves near the car, great to prove dameage in a car park when people just drive off. If the car is parked up for a week or two at an airport won’t this simply flatten the starter battery?

I think I may have just answered on of my own questions.

As the cameras know when you start the engine I assume that they are wired to a fuse that only has power when the ignition s on and the cameras have rechargeable batteries in them.

I also have the UTR in my S4. I like it, my only gripe is that I wish it supported sd cards greater than 8gb.

The parking location only seems to work if you are connected to the camera with WiFi and have the utr app running when you park. Personally I don't bother with it because Mmi connect tells you your parking location anyway.

The utr is powered from the car in parking mode but has a battery saver circuit which will will turn it off if the car battery drops too low.

Thanks,

That makes sense with the battery.
I am not bothered about the parking location, I can normally remember wher I leave my car, I just like to know how things work. Hopefully if my car gets hit when parked it won’t be after the battery has dropped!
I am pretty impressed with the cameras but I haven’t anything else to compare it to. I have two other vehicles that I want cameras for and won’t be spending anywhere near as much on their kit so it will be interesting to see what the comparison is like.

I'm currently contemplating the Audi camera
So glad to hear it's good.
I just assumed you could put a large capacity sd card in so I'm glad this has been clarified above, 8gb is a bit poor.
Where did you all have this fitted? Main dealer or specialist??

Any pics would be helpful

Thanks
K

I should point out that I haven't tried a larger sd card but there's several posts on other forums saying they don't work. They appear to, but all videos saved past the 8gb point are unreadable. Hopefully a firmware update will fix this.

My camera was fitted by the dealer on delivery. Expensive, but came with 3 years warranty and the dealer can't quibble over any warranty claims on anything electrical!

Is the dealer install cost in the region of the hazy dayz cost or way more? Does this include power magic or similar to stop battery drain?

Thanks

Dealer RRP is £635 fitted, which includes everything.

As far as I know the battery cutoff is a standard part of the kit. I certainly haven't had any issues and my car was parked for a while over Christmas.

Another option is to get the UTR from TPS which is where I got mine from. Front & rear camera was £274.96 +VAT Then had the Audi dealer fit it for me. Which is where I got very lucky as they only charged me £75. I did have to take the car in twice as they thought it was an hours job, but after waiting 30 minutes they came back to me and said it was an all day job and would need to book the car in, but they honored the original quote of £75. Couple of weeks later they did the just + a recall action.

My car has been unused for almost 5 weeks and the battery on the car is fine.

Forgive me if I appear silly but who is TPS's?

£75? You did very well!

Whoever thought it would take an hour was way off the mark - there's lots of cable routing to do!

Yer, I went into the dealer and they had no idea what I was talking about and after 20 minutes of waiting they came up with the price so I booked it in for the following week. I knew it was more that 1 hour, but was happy to pay the price and sit in the waiting room until the inevitable service adviser came out to say they could not do the camera in one hour, however they were good enough to honer the quote. In the end it cost me more in time as there was two trips to the Audi dealer.

They did however a first class job as I cold not tell what parts they had removed and no rattles afterwards so overall very happy with the camera & service. My only complaint about the UTR setup is that there are smaller units on the market, but it works and not had any issues with it. Also it does not affect any warranty which was the number one reason for going with the Audi system.

I've just been out to check this as I fitted a 64GB card just after purchasing the system. I got this card
Upload 2018 1 26 18 4 19

and so far it's recorded 46GB of videos and all play fine, and the config file is also not corrupt. So I wonder if it's down to the SD card type/speed etc.

That's good to know as limitations to 8gb is putting me off this. My local dealers have quoted me £495 to supply & install the front camera only - when I asked for a discount on parts or labour they said they couldn't as they already make a loss on fitting!? Said 2-3 hours.

Interesting! Will try a larger card.

I’ve just had a UTR fitted by an Audi dealer, nice neat job and pleased with the camera (front only). Just wondering if anyone else has had a problem with parking mode. The radar should detect movement near the vehicle and record a 20 second clip to the sd card. When another movement is detected it should record another 20 second clip and so forth until that partition of the card is filled. I’m finding that when the camera goes into parking mode the camera keeps recording from the time it’s parked until the partition is full and then stops, without any movement for the radar to pick up. In effect, the camera keeps recording, stops when the parking partition is full which means the radar function is not doing its job, could it be a faulty unit??Any help would be appreciated from you all, thanks.

hey thanks for the info, could you provide a picture please how does it fit with the existing rear view mirror etc and rain sensor unit.

much appreciated

Cheers

Hi zippster, thanks for the reply, as you can see it’s fitted below the rain sensor unit so it doesn’t affect that.

Hi zippster here’s a photo from inside the car, I wasn’t over impressed with the video quality at first, then I found they left the protective film on the lens haha. The camera is not obtrusive at all, you hardly notice it when driving.

Audi fitted mine just to the passenger side of the mirror, it makes ait a bit less visible from the drivers view and you cant se any cables at all.

How much did they sting you for that if you don't mind me asking? My local dealership said something like £500 just for the front camera but it seemed pretty steep versus some of the prices people were saying on here.

I believe the install costs are fixed prices dependant on Model.
I was quoted £495 to supply & install the front camera only - when I asked for a discount on parts or wiggle space I was told no!
My concern is how this unit sits, a specific RHD version would look neater

I had an RS4 loan car this week and that had the front and rear camera fitted. I thought it was fitted too low as I could see it below the mirror. The rear camera is quite big as well, its all I could see in the rear view mirror!
I have the front and rear blackvue in my car and it is much smaller and not so noticeable.

Hi Daggerit, I shopped around with different dealerships, one locally quoted £565 for just the front, supplied and fitted. I had it done at Milton Keynes Audi for £356. Big difference.

I've got one of these, love it except

-the 1 minute intervals - annoying when trying to find a particular video, especially with a large SD card - any ideas how to change this
- my rear camera is much darker than the front - number plate difficult to read - anyone else have this?

Hi sks,
I don’t think you can alter the one minute clips, it’s just a case of remembering a time when an incident occurred and finding that on the timeline. I only have a front camera fitted but I’m guessing that your rear camera is probably filming through tinted or privacy glass so the image would be dark. I believe the rear cameras are also a lower resolution so that may explain things. Have you had any problems with the radar in parking mode at all( see my previous post)? I have had a replacement UTR fitted by Audi and things were fine, everything worked ok. The app instructed me to update the firmware, which I did and now the radar has failed again with the same problem. Just wondering if yours is the same.

Why would they be lower resolution? Stupid especially if you know it’s going through privacy glass.

Not had a problem with the radar tbh. If anything it is too sensitive. Starts with rain, sometimes can’t see anything it’s reacted too. The app is rubbish. It said upgrade firmware but crashed when I tried. Never asked me again lol

It may be wiser to purchase a "high endurance" micro SD card rather than the Sandisk Ultra. The "high endurance" type are available from Sandisk and are specifically designed for long term use with Dashcams etc. Transcend also manufacture high endurance micro SD cards and have a better reputation for reliability, though they are more expensive. Both Sandisk and Transcend "high endurance" micro SD cards are available from Amazon.

There are compatibility issue with some cards with the UTR, they appear to get corruption after around 8Gb of recorded video. I tested a couple of cards found this one to be fully compatible, and have been using it in the camera for the last 10 months without any issues. In a couple of years time I will just replace it with another card of the same type.

Likewise. I too have been using an identical Sandisk ultra 64GB as posted in your #16 without problems for a couple of weeks now.

B5NUT's success at running a 64Gb card prompted me to phone Audi Customer Service to see what they had to say. They advised that 64Gb is the largest micro SD card that should be used in the Audi UTR. I have only today received a Transcend 64Gb High Endurance Micro SD card. I put it straight from the package into the UTR and it was operating immediately as soon at it was powered up. I will post again once the drive is full and has been overwiting. Both the Sandisk and Transcend web sites specify High Endurance cards for Dashcams. I can only assume from this that anything else may prove unreliable in the long term

I find that strange as you only get a 2 year warranty yet the SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC memory card has a lifetime warranty. Either way if it fails after 2 years I could send it away and buy another card as a backup until I get the replacement back. Even if I replaced the card every two year for a new one that works out at £12 a year which is nothing these days.

It's a good question. Sandisk High Endurance are the same as Transcend with respect to the warranty. They also only have a 2 year warranty. I tried a web chat with Sandisk and was transferred to a Supervisor when my questions got too hot for them. I am still none the wiser on the actual technical difference (as opposed to the design criteria) between Ultra and High Endurance. They did state that if the Ultra was used in a dashcam that the warranty would be void. So I guess you won't tell them if you make a claim on the warranty!
