Hi all. Having owned my S4 Avant for over a month now. Love the car but I'm bit concerned on what I'm considering bad mpg. In half tank car does 78 miles. This just driving to work and back sticking to speed limits and not having any play while driving. I've owned several v6 / flat 6 3.0 engines in the past and never have seen that low mpg. Always managed get around 230-270 miles per tank.

I would like to ask if this is normal?
Is there anything I should look at?
Can faulty lambda sensor cause high fuel usage?

I ordered obd2 today and should be in tomorrow so I will scan to see for any faults

Hi @WOJ nice S4 you have got here buddy. If it is pure local trips in 30-50mph zones with start-stop traffic then I would say 78 miles sounds is just about right. Also, you have to consider the weather which doesn’t help as you probably stop the car before the engine is properly warmed up.

I would be disappointed to only get a little under 11mpg even around town.
 
If you haven't already, I think you need to conduct some precise, accurate fuel consumption checks. Brim the tank, run it in mixed driving conditions until the gauge is near empty, then go back to the same pump and brim the tank to exactly the same cut off point. Divide the number of litres put in by 4.545 to get the number of gallons used, then divide the number of miles covered by the gallons used. Then you' ll have an accurate mpg figure.

Do that, and run a Carista fault scan once the OBD dongle has arrived, then report both sets of result here. :)

Mine would do approx 120 miles to half a tank of town driving .average around 25 mpg

12h night shift today. Wonder what I will be doing

Would you recommend tourque app or carista?
Not familiar with any of those.

Would carista allow me to scan vehicle for errors without paying subscription?

Nice car. I had a6 c7 avant before that and nearly killed it on short journeys. Had to find petrol. And finding petrol with 2 litre engine in estate is a mission

Hi guys. This is my results of today's detailed ECU scan. Originally I've just run check for fault codes and it returned 0

I then tried with Tourque lite app and that returned 0 faults as well.

Decided to run detailed ECU scan and this are the results.

What I don't understand is why lights still are not levelling but there is no fault code below?

I'm bit of a noob still with this OBD2 scanning so to me looks like car is all good.

Or there is other way that this meant to be done?

Looks like a clean bill of health. ESP flashing up is normal when scanning.

Maybe you just need to adjust your driving style a little, do you have drive select? If you do try Efficiency or Comfort modes.

Cheers for your reply. Yup usually around city it's stays in Comfort all the time. I usually get up to speed and then release the throttle to the point in holds constant speed. All in all looks like it's drinks what it meant to drink.. needs join AA group. So why it's not throwing error for headlights? Maybe because they were off? Would scanning still work on engine running with lights on?

Just been thinking. What petrol u guys use. Do you go and put "premium" 95/97 or equivalent from your local supermarket.

I think on the next fill up I will put 97 premium brand fuel. Not sure if this will make difference

Going around town in start stop traffic I'll easily get 15mpg average and that's with me being heavy on the loud pedal and the box set to manual making the milltek sing as much as possible

If I stick it in D then it will usually just scrape low 20s

I use Shell VPower. Quite a few here use Tesco Momentum / Shell Regular however I have not used it myself. Personally, I would never use supermarket fuel. Supermarkets are to buy groceries . My wife put a tenner once (Sainsbury’s) and used bus the next day

As long as you have the ignition on the scan will work. Lights don’t have to be on for the scan.

Check your fuel filler lid. On the inside it gives a recommended octane. Mine is 95 RON but I have a B8.5. The B8 might be different.

In order to take advantage of a higher octane fuel, the ECU can advance the timing. If it does this under "normal" driving conditions then it can become more efficient. It has been my belief that the "stock" ECU does not do this, so there is no advantage in paying more for the super except for any other additives they might put in. However that belief is no longer 100% after I didn't get a clear answer to the question from a certain well-know tuner.

Yes. its just the App/program probing the ECU.. All normal ;-)

78miles journey

Speed 60-75mph

Fuel usage 28mpg based on trip computer (sorry but on the picture shows in litres/km

So all in all city is disaster but motorway is more than acceptable when you consider what's under the bonnet.

More than happy. Still waiting for phone call from dealer so will update as soon as I know something.

My plan for journey back when I collect the car is to drive all the way in dynamic sticking to the same speeds to see what will be the difference in fuel between them 2 modes.

So just received the phone call from them saying that they have run the scan and there is no errors etc. They inspected sensors but they look ok. Then they decided to lubricate "arms". They asked me if they could keep the car overnight and use it to see if it's going to do anything weird.

So at the moment they unable to find any faults with it. I showed them video I made so at least they seen it in doing this spastic movement.

Will see. Got gut feeling that they will be unable to diagnose and repair.

Which arms they lubricate ?

There are arms attached to the front and rear axle that move according to the load in the car, so if you have something heavy in the boot this pushes down at that axle and would point your headlights higher. To compensate the sensor registers the back end of the car being pushed down and adjusts the headlights accordingly so that they always stay at the same level if that makes sense... The arms that are attached to the front and rear axle have to be able to pivot on a little bearing or something I would guess so that's probably what they have lubricated.

I picked up the car today. They could not find any fault with it. They lubricated arms and seems that at them moment they working fine. We see in the week or so if this resolved the problem.

Hmm. Maybe I should have explained this better. :) Normally my S4 tramps the road to work and back which is part motorway. This regularly turns in 30+ mpg.

As I had some stop start town driving to do I thought I'd see what I got as I remembered @WOJ was asking about this.

Any better? :D

Hi, whilst I don’t (enviously!) have a S4 , my 2.0TFSI Quattro S-Tronic is a thirsty ****** as well. Especially about city where I do most of my driving which can be fairly short runs.
I see anything from 11mpg to 20mpg on a good quiet traffic day !

Plus the colder weather has made it take a dive.
I’ve recently being putting it in sport mode or M to let it rev more, stay in a gear longer , and importantly get up to temp much quicker .
This is working pretty well. Before I was struggling to get over 15mpg in daytime traffic , now I can get 17-20 if I don’t eat it change great as much.
I think cold weather and the s-Tronic in normal changing up early , really does not run the engine efficiently.

Been wanting to take a picture of my mpg for @WOJ but after reading @scotty76 ‘s post I thought it might be depressing for him. @WOJ here is my overall vs today’s mpg, you are not alone in this. And none of bought S4 for consumption.

179 miles on a tank which included one trip to Newbury (50 odd miles) and the rest were local.

Overall - ****** economical

Cruise control is what get the better MPG n a run.Boring as hell though :)
