Key Fob Battery

About a month ago my car started telling me my key fob needs it's battery changing. Not sure if that's normal enough after 18 months from new but thought I'll just start using the 2nd key as it's never been used and my lease ends in May so I'll just use it till then. However after one month of using the 2nd key the same thing now, it apparently needs a new battery. Surely there's something else going on here, how could it run out of battery after a month?

Our fiesta seems to eat fob batteries, yet my a4 is fine. Are you sure you aren't accidently pressing on one of the buttons when the car is out of range?

I don't think so, I'm fairly careful ever since coming back to an open boot in Sainsbury's carpark not long after getting the car!!

Mine went the other day after 17 months but at £1.50 to fix no worries.

I'm assuming you just did it yourself and also assume it's easy to do? I've no issues doing it, just hoping it isn't something else wrong considering the 2nd key only seemed to last 1 month.

I think If you've got keyless entry or keyless start, the fob is always giving off a signal so even if not used, your 2nd key will have been discharging the whole time.

Dead easy just followed YouTube video, took only a few minutes to do.

Mine complained at 14 months / 40k.
Exclusively use same key because of MMI customisation but does not seem unreasonable to me?

same for me I had to change my battery in key fob 1 after 18 months then within a month I had to change the battery in key fob 2,as said the fob would be giving off a signal regardless if you use it or not.

Thank you everybody for the replies. I've ordered the batteries off eBay and will replace then, good to know it's normal.

One problem with the A4 keyfob I find (and my friend who also has an A4) is the buttons are easily pressed whilst in your pocket. I've had a few times where I've left the car, put my keys in my pocket, and the car has opened or the boot opened etc.

I seem to recall that at my first service the batteries were changed in my keys as a standard part of the service so not had any low battery issues but worth noting that even if the battery goes completely flat then it won't lose the coding. I've got 3 keys for mine and after a year and a half without a battery in my spare third one, it worked fine today once I put a fresh battery in it - including remembering the seat position and heater settings that were stored on the key.

Blimey that's a first, never once had fob batteries changed as part of a service...
