Best 4k TV's

I'm on the look out for a good 4k TV. Having read all the reviews etc, it seems that the decent 4k tv's start at around £2k.

The LG OLED 55C7 and newly released Sony A1 OLED seem to be the best TV's according to every review I have read.

The LG has just been halved in price from £3k to £1499 in Currys. Does anybody have this TV and can comment on any pros or cons?
 
Yup. Have the LG C7 and it’s awesome.

Con is screen burn. I had a ex display B6 and it had major screen burn. Was dealing with LG to get it repaired over the last 4months and in the end just returned it for a refund and bought a C7 as the deals meant it was now cheaper.

As long as you don’t have a static image on the screen for hours and make sure you let the panel do a refresh when you switch it off (every time the TV is on for 4hr, it will do a refresh when you switch it off), you should be golden. If you plan on using it to game a lot then you might want to reconsider...

Richer sounds is pretty good for deals. They have excellent extended warranties on the tellys as well. The mother in law had an LG 32 inch telly that gave up after 4 years. They gave her a loan set and after 2 weeks when it was determined hers could not be fixed cost effectively she got a new LG 32 inch LG with a slightly better spec than the last one and another 5 year warranty.
Seems they come with 6 year warranties now.

I am still on my many years old 42 inch Panasonic Plasma. As I don't have sky Q and no 4K content to watch I haven't pushed the boat out on a new TV.
When I do will probably get last years discounted half price model from Richer sounds. Unless you are a real anorak you can't tell the difference in picture quality and with a set that's been around for 12-18 months you may start to see some early life failures.

No it should be fine, but the nature of games means that it can have a static HUD on screen that *could* lead to screen burn. But we’re talking like constantly playing 8hrs straight with really bright yellow/orange HUD elements. Just make sure you leave the TV on at the mains and let it do the panel refresh when you turn it off after 4hrs of accumulated on time.

The other thing to consider is that input lag is quite high. LG do have a gaming mode that turns off a lot of the image processing to reduce input lag though, so doubt it would be hugely noticeable on a PS4 that is restricted to about 30FPS anyway.

I chased a repair of the old unit since July before I just gave up.

They replaced some parts and was still faulty so said they would order a new panel.

Then got told a new panel would take 6weeks. Told them I would wait and it only took a week.

New panel arrived and once it was on the wall again noticed it was completely bent on one corner. Had to redo all the work and send it back.

Waited 2 weeks and chased to find no one was doing anything and was told it would be 6weeks for another panel.

Waited 7 weeks and chased and no one placed the order!! Told it was now going to be another 7weeks!!!

Hence I just told them to stuff it and thankfully there were good deals on this week to enable me to get the same TV for the same price....

Shame other OLEDs aren’t around for the same price as I was loathed to buy another LG product....
 
So the LG seems the best TV....but....they seem to have terrible customer service?

Are they poorly made?

I’ve had Sony TVs in the past and currently have a Samsung TV and never had a problem. The LG and Sony TVs trump the Samsung TVs in all tests. Can’t quite justify £3k for the new Sony A1 though, so was seriously considering LG OLED.

Not as such. Screen burn is just something you get with OLED technology. Every technology will have its pros and cons. Nearly anything with an OLED panel will have some instance of screen burn if it's been abused. As long as you're not stupid with it, you shouldn't have any problems though.

Samsung's have nice bright backlit LCD TVs, but the QLED is just marketing to try and jump on the back of the OLED bandwagon. It's a very nice bright screen, but it will never have the contrast or deep blacks of an OLED.

As you say, the Sony OLED is great, but a high price.
For the money, you really cant get better than the LG OLED.

Only options I was considering were the Sony 9000 series, as it's a direct lit backlight, not edge lit:

But it's not a true 10bit panel, and the OS isn't as nice as LG's WebOS.

Or the Toshiba 900 series, or the Samsung KS9/8000, but they don't stock those models anymore.
 
We have always had Sony TVs and recently changed to a Panasonic, we went for the 50DX802B, very impressed with it and its a really good TV with excellent picture quality and very good reviews too, only qualm i have with it is the screen has a gloss finish to it, so if we are watching it on a bright day, it can have reflection on it, so can make it difficult to watch sometimes.

No, so rather than a traditional edge lit LCD, this is a direct lit one. It's basically as close as you will get to OLED with backlit technology.

I don't think the contrast, viewing angles or black levels will still be as good as the LG OLED, but the motion processor is meant to be the best. I've read that the LG OLED will handle standard definition better too, although most of what I watch is either 4K or HD. Sony will have lower input lag and no worries about screen burn/image retention.

Would see if you can see them both in person, although be aware that stores will crank the settings up on display models with tailored demos running to make them look their best, and will rarely be representative of what you will see at home....

Personally at ~£300 between them, my money is still on the LG OLED...

Some good advice there guys.

I have heard about the display models not showing representative pictures.

I can'tell find a currys with the LG C7 OLED on display anywhere near me unfortunately.
 
Have you checked whether there is much stock left for the B7/C7...?

When the B6/C6 when down to £1499 it was bought up pretty quick. I know as the best I could get was that ex-display model...!

There was a voucher couple of weeks back that meant I got the C7 for £1349, and I snapped it up....
 
I've no experience of the TVs mentioned but I would say that if you're planning to spend a fair bit John Lewis are excellent for customer support. It wouldn't matter what brand you bought as you'll never have to deal directly with the manufacturer, any issues are dealt with by JL in the 5 yr warranty period.
They won't price match Costco but will most other dealers.

I was looking at finding a Curry's that has an LG C7 on display this weekend. Just noticed that Currys have increased the price by £100 to £1599 now!!!

Well I’ve seen an ex display Sony A1 55” for £1200 on eBay.

Mind you I can get the LG OLED 55” B7 for £1350 in argos. My friends wife can get me discount. Is that a good deal?

LG only have a standard 12 month warranty on their TVs: http://www.lg.com/uk/support/warranty
Lots of shops now give 5 years free, or have periods where they give 5 years as a free promotion, including Currys, John Lewis, Richer Sounds (6 years) and Amazon.
 
Well I waited for argos to get the TV back in stock and they have upped the price to £1799!!!! Raging!!!
 
It will be back down again in the new year sales. Keep your money in your pocket for a few more weeks and save a couple of hundred pounds.

The TV is back down to £1499 in Curry’s. I can get it for £1350 with my discount. Just wondering whether to take the plunge or not.

Not yet. Can’t really fit it in my car for my journey home! (Visiting family in Scotland for the holiday period)

I had a LG 4K and and if I am honest it’s not as good as the Panasonic one I have just changed it for it's the 750 model and blows the LG away.

Unfortunately not all 4K TV's are created equal...

A lot of the budget LG 4K TV's are poorly reviewed, and most don't even have true 4K panels (Google RGBW panels if you're geeky about this stuff...). There is really nothing on the market at it's price point that can beat the LG OLED range though....

For the lower price point, Panasonic, Sony and Samsung produce much better TV's though.
 
My friend bought a top of the range Panasonic 4K tv recently and he hates it. Loads of motion blur and he’s wishing he had bought an OLED. The new Panasonic and Sony OLED TV’s have LG panels.

I have heard the cheaper LG 4K UHD TV’s aren’t very good.

To be fair, the first thing I did on my LG OLED was turn off the motion stuff....! Makes it really weird! Apparently the Sony has amazing motion processing.

I dont blame you it's a fair chunk of cash.

If it helps, I have no regrets and love watching 4K content on it. Stranger Things, Black Mirror and Narcos have been great with Dolby Vision on Netflix, Blue Planet in 4k on BBC iPlayer was astonishing, 4K movies on Sky are great and I can't get enough of 4K premier league games on Sky either.

My dad also recently got a more budget LG 4k, and while he really doesn't care for the tech as much as me, he's even commented on how he's a little disappointed with the screen 'blooming' around the edges. Came and watched mine and realised what I got for that extra money (although he still thinks its stupid :p).
