The Golf R vs Audi S3 debate is so old now it's getting a bit tedious.

The R handles better but the S3 is a nicer place to be. That's pretty much the crux of it and R owners who claim their interior and tech is just as good or S3 owners who claim their car handles just as well are both in denial :p

Itchy feet.....mate, maybe the start of a new Voyage for another Audi....per chance.....

Ha ha not quite.
I’m always looking though (window shopping) lol :)
Any S3 I price up goes over £40k
I ‘could’ get a great spec Golf R well below £40k
I do really like the Golf R and I think it looks really sharp.
But I like the ‘AUDI’ S3 too.
But there is no denying the VW us excellent value for money - and available in a manual :)

I think I’ve gotta wait it out.
I would love a new platform S3 as soon as they come out in ‘maybe’ 2019 but that is a long time to wait.

A current S3 from a PFL RS3 could be a wrong move though.
I can’t bring myself to order another RS3 though as they still have $hi7e brakes & the price hike is a bitter pill to swallow - think I’d sooner have an S4.

In Australia the price is still fair way apart. The Golf R is pretty much fully loaded stock, most just get Drivers assist and possibly sunroof and with bit of negotiation car get drive away for about $55-60K but if you spec a S3 up here with Performance pack, mirrors, DA etc then you do well to get price of low 70-75K.

Roughly 15K difference is quite significant. In saying that though we got amazing price thorough lease for the FL s3 so went that path was barely any more than the R.

The 7.5R has caught up a LOT to the s3 though here. Tech is almost the same now whereas before the S3 was significantly better equipped. If I was not leasing the R would be the obvious choice now on cost but having both the FLs3 and Stage 2 MK7R I get best of both worlds, absolutely love the way my R drives and absolutely love the Tech in the S3. Wife and I are very happy and either car is fantastic.

After 2 1/2 years in my S3 I’m pleasantly surprised with the quality of the interior of my 7.5R it’s really not bad at all. Tech is great BTW.

Electric mirrors, adaptive cruise and digital dash standard also help with the price gap.

Would love an RS4 mate, but can't really justify one for the low miles I do.
Where is yours in the build cycle ?

Cheers pal - I know you had one for a short period of time.
I REALLY dig those alloys too :sunglasses:
Like I say, I could be tempted - the R makes a LOT of sense on a lot of levels and financially ticks a lot of boxes.
Rock solid VW build quality too.

That's unusual. My S3 spec was 37K, and my Golf R spec was £40k even though I work at Volkswagen.

£50k is a tad OTT @jassyo06 lad for a Golf R lol :)

If I did get one I would purposely keep the options low - so as to make it a bargain.

I would go with standard Nav & I would even run with the cloth seats, just to save £1700 on leather.
I would also happily have a manual saving more £'s.

In fact I think the only extras I would add are the fancy 19" jagged look alloys & blue / white or white silver paint.
Negotiate circa 15% off and jobs a good un

There is a lot of standard kit on the Golf R though that is a cost extra on the S3.

Digital screen on the S3 is tech pack only @ £1300
Folding mirrors @ £300
For 19" alloys you HAVE TO spec mag ride etc

5 door Golf R manual in pure white non metallic plus 19" spielberg alloys (the only extra) = Total £34,175

Less circa 15% = £30k

That is a lot of car for the money

Golf r

It is indeed Snake.......

My one and ONLY gripe.... no five cylinder engine.

Other than that fantastic car (especially with Res Delete and a few choice mods).

Pano-roof would set the white paint off perfectly mate but gotta go dsg lol

Hmmm yeah pano roof would look good against the white paint but that would add another £grand.
DSG is around £1500 and like I say I like manual and DSG so would go manual to make it cheap as chips.
Keep it cheap and could trade in for a brand new spanker new platform S3 in 2 years and not lose too much I reckon.
And tick the Golf R itch :)
Not saying I would do it, but for the money, it certanly makes you think.

Yeah I know its never gonna match the amazing 5 pot of the RS3, but that is where the HUGE difference in cost would justify it.
Just speculation at the moment but you never know lol :)

Pano is a great addition as it makes it look that bit nicer, the DSG box I wouldn’t be without @Snake Pliskin

What I found was that if you found a new one that was your spec or close then the dealer was willing to discount to get a deal.

Audi are hard work by comparison.

Could be one of the last manuals though - as not available on the S3 now.
Pano would be nice, but as a 2 year flipper till the next S3 comes out, I would want to keep the price low as possible so as to limit the depreciation hit.
Yes Audi can have a take it or leave it attitude whereas VW are "up for a deal" lol :)

I would weigh up all options if I did change cars.

It’s just “thinking” at the moment & the ultra cheap price of the R got me pondering. The most likely option is I stay put in the RS but then by August next year I will be twitching tonorder for March 19 and timing won’t be great then (in the Audi range) for a replacement. New platform A3 will be on the horizon but new S3 could be ?
If I then that the new S3 will be out September 19 I could probably wait for that as that would be just 6 months after I would usually change (every 3 years) .... but do we think new S3’s will be out late 2019 ?

RS3 ......thought about it when I ordered my S3.....too much lolly for a souped up A3 and to be dead honest when am I going to release those extra ponies. I would go VW R and or wait for new S3

New S3 should be a superb car - it’s just knowing when it’s likely to be available.
