So I have been driving what I believe to be a CR140 a3 tdi manual for a while now and really impressed.

I have decided to buy a 3 door manual next based on this.

I am struggling to choose between CR140 vs CR170 vs 2.0T FSI EA888 in the same car however..

I want a Black Edition.

The car I am driving is a 2009 58 reg S-Line with 2 exhaust pipes. It is the 140hp model so I believe it is a CR140? I really like how it drives. It even makes a nice exhaust sound around 2000rpm.

But CR140 BE's come with a single tip which I hate and its gonna be quite expensive to swap to a double one (new exhaust, new diffuser or even new bumber depending on availability).

From what I have read a remapped cr140 is better than a cr170 however looking at the power and torque curves the 140 has a rather large flatspot, even when remapped. Is a cr170 that laggy?

Then I have the 2.0 TFSI engine. EA888. Is this better? I had an EA113 engined one before but dsg and it was very nice but gobbled fuel! Made a lovely exhaust note though, that a 4 cylinder diesel just cant keep up with.

I do about 300 miles a week but quite a lot of these are short journeys. In my diesels ive found myself going for longer drives than I should just to warm up the car properly so I don't get issues. In a petrol car I wouldn't have to do this?

However I also live near here:

Between spring and autumn I try to go there in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week, atleast 1-2x per week. Can't go at weekends too many cyclists / mad bikers / supercars.

Thanks

Exactly what I was thinking about I end up with a3 s line black edition same 3 door 2.0 TDi CR140 very cheap to run very cheap tax £30 per year, my plans for now are remap rs3 grill trc splitter etc etx paid £9,400 with 68k mileage

Go petrol, costs more for fuel but doesn't have problems like the diesels do in regards to dpf's on short journeys. Also the government is going to be hitting the diesel owners soon and I would assume car prices are going to drop. The 2.0 tfsi is a cracking motor, just keep an eye on the oil level as they like to drink the stuff and change the cam follower when servicing, £30 part, and all will be fine. The tfsi will remap well too.

2008 to 2011 models with 2.0 petrols gobble Oil. Massive issue with them. Buy carefully. Injector issues with the 170 tdi. I would personally got for a 140 tdi or consider the 1.8tfsi petrol.

There was and issue with high oil usage but was it really a massive issue? We hear of the complaints here on the forum but we don't always hear the happy stories. My previous 1.8TFSI (09) didn't use any oil in the 3 months, 1k miles I owned it for.

@thesmileyone not to spend your money but would you consider a pre-facelift S3 - meets your spec and there is a couple of good mileage examples on Autotrader at the mo...

An issue ? It’s massive. It made watchdog and national news. Unless you buy a used approved from Audi or know he car has been fixed avoid it. Unless you have a spare 5 grand knocking around to fix it.
Not restricted to A3. A4 and 5 owners also affected.
You only kept your A3 for 3 months and 1k miles. Mine eat through a litre of oil every 1290 miles and got worse to the extent of a litre of oil with every tank of fuel. And that was a 1.8.

140 cr all the way. Unless you can afford a 2013 model petrol.

I am not an audi basher. I am on my 5th and still have two. Just need to be aware when buying as nothing worse than sinking your hard earned into a car to then find outs it’s a lemon.

Sorry, I didn’t appreciate how big an issue it was. I knew it made Watchdog but thought it was only certain engines across the A3 & A4.

No apology needed my friend. The OP just needs to have their eyes open. Of the engines mentioned the 140 has the least amount of flaws and will be cheapest to fix if it does suffer

have had my 2.0TFSI EA888 for 5 years. Absolutely loved it.

I know to avoid the 1.8T. I had one before and it was slow and used a lot of fuel. And they need new piston rings around 60k.

I didn't realise the 2.0T had issues? An expert elsewhere said

"B8 cars so A4, A5 & Q5 with the longitudinal 2.0T." are the only 2.0T' EA888 affected.

Yeah I have been looking at them. Everything is twice the amount.
Servicing
Tax
Insurance
etc.

Plus the original 8p1/2 is an old car now.

You're right a remapped cr140 is better than a 170 as a decent remap takes them to about 190bhp(not sure on torque figures).
But then remap a cr170 and a decent remap can take them upto 210bhp(again not sure on torque figures) so I don't really see the point you're trying to make there.
If you're worried about flat spots etc then any decent remapper/custom remapper won't have them so make sure you go somewhere with a good reputation.
With the 2 Diesel engines then go with whichever you prefer as there really isn't much difference in them, they're both guna have people reporting issues with them as that's just what happens with cars but there isn't anything major wrong with either of them.
Someone's comment about running costs is interesting though as I have a cr170 and my tax has just come through at £150 for the year so it seems a 140 is much cheaper in that respect.
I can't comment on the petrols as I've never owned one but i have read a lot of posts on here about them using a lot of oil.
Oh you also say cr 140 be's have a single tip exhaust, that is wrong or partly wrong as my cousin has just bought a 09 reg 140 black edition and it has twin exhaust tips and there are also a few on auto trader aswell.

What is on your list in-terms of priority? That is the question here. Performance, economy, etc..

Obvs, everyone want the moon on a stick, but ultimately what is going to be the deciding factor in whether you stick with the first choice you make or change for something else?

Diesels will very soon start to be phased so I'd be make the decision carefully. If you aren't going to be doing many miles and if economy isn't that important then the petrol is a clear choice. Sounds much better too. The 2.0 TFSI responds very well to a remap. But obviously as others have mentioned there are issues with the petrol engines unfortunately. The diesel CR engines seem to be a lot more reliable compared to their PD predecessors.

So do I. No oil consumption issues but there's been a few issues with the cam chain jumping a cog or two due to a weak chain tensioner. Buy a 2009 + A3 TFSI and allow about £800 to change the chain and tensioner. Map it and you'll have an S3 on a budget.

I actually would keep what you have, better the devil you know and save yer money.

As stated previously, you need to write your preferences. It's hard to compare 2.0 TFSI to 2.0 TDI.

140 TDI CR is the wise choice, 2.0 TFSI is choice by heart.

EA888 2.0 TFSI's seem pretty rare. Hows the engine note? Compared to an S3..

Same note I believe. Especially the quattros they have the same system.

They are rare. Only 5 for sale in the whole UK (3 door, manual, sub 70k).

I quite like the current car but its done 105,000 miles now and although looked after, things will start needing doing like brakes, door locks, all the **** i went through with my old car like wiper motors etc just down to component age and wear.

I have a 2011 2.0 TFSI which is actually the TSI engine on APR Stage 2. Not had any issues and I’m at 31k miles. Nice raspy note with the BCS downpipe.
