Hello People,

Why do Audi not fit the Auto Dimming Mirror to the passenger side? My S3 8P had both driver and passenger Auto Dimming Mirrors, but the 8v only has it fitted to the drivers side.

Cheers Dan

Probably because it's much further out your vision normally so doesn't bother you as much, unless you look at it.

Am I hinting a slight bit of sarcasm there, LOL. It's does bother me as when i'm on the motorway I get dazzled sometimes. Thinking of retro fitting one, can't be that hard..........

Do you want the bad news? It's back!

I had the same reaction when it was removed on the 8V but it's back on both sides on the facelift. They obviously had a quite a few complaints.

I don't think my facelift got auto-dimming mirrors on both sides. Audi here in Denmark also gives the description that it is only the drivere side mirror that is dimming.

Honestly I thought it was due to security reasons to make sure we can see the bikes, etc. when making right-turns.

Looking at the danish description now, they actually removed the text saying it is only the driver side. Looks like I need to go and have a test :)

I find it quite annoying lol, I've bought a passenger side dimming glass just need to find out where to plug into the door controller. Any help on that guys would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

You have bought passenger side glass and not driver's side for LHD vehicles haven't you?

Anyone help with the wiring of the dimming mirror on the passenger side? Would it be the same as the drivers side?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd help if I could.

But I can't.

So I won't.

Sorry :(

All these retro fitters on this forum and not one of them can give out any information lol.

All I'm asking is for the information to fit a dimming mirror to the passenger side.

It ain't on the passenger side of the face lift cars

Yes it is, was using mine a lot on the M6 and M42 this afternoon/evening.

EDIT: I think it may have been added on the MY18 rather than facelifts in general. Out of interest, do facelifts have the new "frameless" rear view mirror or is that just MY18 too?

Whoa are you sure?! That's bonkers!

Mine definitely has it both sides - I could immediately see the tell-tale border around the mirror on both sides. Sure enough, in motorway traffic in the dark today, all three mirrors were doing their dimming stuff.

Also really like the new frameless RVM, compared to the old one with the sensor below the glass. Presume the sensor is now behind the glass somewhere and you can no longer turn it off.

EDIT: The current brochure clearly states both sides and the original facelift brochure does also so it's not just an MY18 thing. If you specced dimming mirrors and the passenger side doesn't have it then I'd get onto Audi and claim that as a build fault.

I will double check tomorrow but doubt it

EDIT l don't have any border round both mirrors

So spoke to Audi Tyneside today, they said that 8V models from 2014-2016 do not have the anti dazzle mirror fitted to the passenger side for wht ever reason lol, but due to complaints the new ones do. LOL.

Surely it can not be hard to fit two wires for the dimming glass like the drivers side? I just require the correct information to do the retrofit correctly.

Cheers

Neither mirror has the border?

Sounds like you don't have dimming mirrors then. Did you spec it, or merely folding?

Yep, was both mirrors on the 8P, then they removed it from the passenger side on the 8V. I commented at the time that it was an incredibly stingy move by Audi and it seems others have complained about it too since they've added it back in on the facelift.

I will concede that the driver's side is the worst for dazzle from following vehicles but that doesn't mean the passenger side doesn't also suffer from it.

Collected mine on 9th December 2016 and I have both passenger and driver side auto dimming mirrors fitted from factory.

So it can be easily retrofitted then, don't understand why Audi Tyneside have given this information......
Just to clarify my mirrors were part of my factory order. Easy retrofit? Yup but costs a fair bit as the trade cost on heated auto dimming glass is £260+ per side.

Audi dealerships are full of shizz and are not interested in works like this. Most have no idea how to perform retrofits and will farm any works like this, for ordered but missing items etc, out to people like myself.

Interestingly, on the dealer retrofit issue, it seems that Audi still aren't fitting the Audi Beam lights at the factory - my dealer had to do it and gave me the old lights when I collected.

What aren't Audi fitting these on the production line?

Not sure on that one. Will have a look on the system to see if there is a note as to why the next time I am connected.

Recently there has been no ryhme or resean to both Audi and their dealerships procedures to be honest.

I already have the passenger dimming glass, looking at the mirror there is not green and black wire like the drivers side, as this has the dimming glass installed for the factory. So its the wiring in the door and mirror (passenger side) that's the issue. I'd obviously pay for the passenger door and mirrors looms. But can not find the person or information to carry it out. Thanks Dan

Currently I'm retrofitting a dimming mirror on the driver's side of my car, since my A3 8V doesn't have them on neither side, and maybe I can help a little. According to Audi electrical diagrams, the wiring and connector pinouts are the same on both sides. A pair of wires (green and blue) come from the interior mirror (8 pin connector, pins 4 and 5) and run through the A pilar trims down to the door disconnector ( 27 pin connector, pins 2 and 3), then through the internal door harness to connect to the door module (20 pin connector, pins 8 and 17). From the door module, the 16 pin connector uses two wires (now a black and a black/brown) connected to pins 2 and 6 through the mirror harness to connect to the mirror lens. The complexity of the task depends on what is already present or not in your current configuration.

You're welcome. I think the most complex part in this kind of retrofit is the fact that your mirror doesn't have the wirings for the auto-dim glass. In this case, you have to add a pair of wires to the existing wiring loom. It's possible to do that and I did it with my mirror successfully. But you'll have to remove the mirror from the car and disassemble it in order to gain total access to the loom. It has both ends sealed with tape and it also has a heat shrinkable sleeve on the mirror end. In order to allow the insertion of the adittional wires, you also have to remove two zip ties and a grommet from the loom, and release it from a turn around a pole located in the mirror base, locked with a tooth lock washer. The zip ties can be unlocked with a sharp point tool without cutting them so you can reuse. The grommet can be shifted away from the loom tubing by moving toward the 16-pin connector. Once the wiring loom is free from all of those constraints, you can pass the two wires for the mirror glass inside the tube, along with the existing wires.

On the 16-pin connector the wires should be connected to MQS 0.63 mm female terminals, inserted on slots 2 and 6. The repair cable part number corresponding to these terminals is 000979009E. On thee mirror side there should be a two-pin connector for the mirror glass, but I couldn't discover what connector type it is. In my case I connected the wires from the loom directly to the wires installed on the glass instead of using connectors. The only problem is that now I have to cut wires in case I have to replace the glass but I don't worry about it. Anyway, it's possible that you find some type of part number on the connector you have on the glass that helps you to identify what type of connector it is.

I think it's a good idea programming to do all that when you have plenty of time since you'll have to remove the door trim, remove the mirror, make the modifications and reinstall mirror and trim and it may take a whole day. All other connections and routing of wires are much simpler. In my car the wirings in the door wiring loom (connecting the control module to the door disconnector) were already present, even though my car didn't have any dimming mirror, so chances are that your car already have them present too. In this case, all you have to add is the the wiring connecting the interior mirror to the door disconnector, which is a 27-pin connector located close to the door hinges. You can access it by removing the bottom A-pilar trim. There should be a small square window through wich you can pull the existent wiring loom in order to gain access to the connector. The terminals to be used in this connector are type MCON 1.2 mm male, corresponding repair cable part number is 000979035E. Good luck!

Thanks for your help Rcord, finally got the wiring in the mirror fitted, luckily enough the wiring in the door and from the internal mirror was already fitted from the factory. So I only needed to fit the wiring on the passenger mirror.

Once again thanks for the help

Dan
