How do I know if my gearbox is the box that needs the regular service intervals?

Iv tried calling Audi and I'm still waiting for them to call me back. It's has full Audi service history so I want to know if they will of already done it if it needed doing?

It's a 2012 A6 3.0 TDI quattro 245ps it has a flappy paddle gearbox as well as being able to be left in Auto and using the gearleaver to shift as well..

I'm hearing people saying 38k and people saying 40k and some people saying it doesn't need doing?

Confused!?

7 speed S-Tronic

Every 38,000 miles. Essential it’s done on time to avoid issues
Thanks I phoned Audi in the end and they advised me that it was a recommended extra that needed doing on top of the service that has been done already.

All booked in now for Thursday... Hoping all goes well..

Thanks anyway.

Interesting - does anyone know what the service interval is on the 8 speed ?

The same for the mtronic gearbox. I had a look into it just incase I had that box.

The Audi dealer I bought the car from said it's sealed "for life" ?

Not according to the Audi handbook...it says multi tronic gearbox 38k as well. Might be worth having a look for your self incase i mis understood.

I've just checked the handbook and it does say 38k.
Been reading this: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/service-s-tronic.288734/
I have the BiTDI which has a ZF box which is supposedly sealed. Confused now - going to contact Audi UK and see what they say.
Well I'm confused about your box but I certainly know what mine needs lol. Yours is a newer engine so I would of thought it also came with the s tronic box since that's meant to be the more sporty gearbox with better gear changes etc. People are describing the mtronic as a CVT which just keeps the rpm in the same place and adjusts the gearing via a belt. Surely they don't put a system like that in a biturbo 3.0.

Iv just had a look at your gearbox. Nothing like a m tronic box or a CVT. Something new and improved looking on YouTube videos.

I'd certainly check with Audi what type of service intervals you need for it. I don't think yours is a mtronic box.

The BiTDI is and was only fitted with the ZF 8 speed gearbox

The ZF gearbox according to Audi is 'sealed for life'

ZF (the manufacturer) actually recommend an oil change every 60,000 miles or so.

Be careful in that the oil is VERY expensive. Expect to pay north of £500 for the job.........

Wow lol. That's very expensive.

I spoke to ZF about our bitdi gearbox, they said 60 to 80 k depending on driving / towing when I said ours was on 105k they advised not to change the oil as they had done a couple in the past and it caused issues. Once we had missed the interval they said leave it .

Audi were clueless

That's crazy how it causes issues after missing the interval. You wouldn't think that would be the case.

Depends where you are, if you go on the ZF website they have details of their authorised service centers.

Sit down for the price though somewhere around £600. from what I remember.

I know it sounds crazy about it causing issues but it was a tech in their technical department. Sounded like he knew what he was on about. He also said he knew it didn`t sound logical but they had had 2 gearboxes fail after oil changes above 100k. When they investigated they said it was down to the platelets in the oil and something about the gearbox relearning with new oil that caused the damage.

I'm no gearbox expert but I know these gearboxes are very trick. There are some nice videos on how they work

Well this is the response from Audi UK:
Having spoken to our Technical Support Team they have advised me that the gearbox on you vehicle does not need a service or an oil change as it is a fully automatic gearbox. They have said the only time the gearbox oil would be changed is if a repair had to be done to the gearbox.
It's a fully automatic gearbox so doesn't need an oil change - who knew :tearsofjoy:

Wow good response. Everything could benefit from a service if it has oil in it.

Iv noticed a difference in mine after having my gearbox oil done.. smoother changes and I feel like I'm getting better mpg. It may be all in my head but Im glad I had it done.

My BiTDi is currently on 125k miles and shifts smoothly. I’m afraid to service it now, just incase in actually breaks something?! Lol

I had the same response from Audi, also queried the sports diff and first told I don’t have one as it RS6 only, then told like the box it’s sealed for life

I had the same questions about my BiTdi ZF8, phoned Audi and same response..."sealed for life". This is Rubbish.

Looking back through my service history I'm thankful a previous owner had an oil and filter change at 40k. I bought mine at 90k and had it done again pretty much straight away. The oil that came out was in dire need of changing! I shudder to think what the inside of ones that have been sealed for life are like inside.

Post 90k service it is even more silky smooth (which I thought near impossible) and the best part....a ZF software update meaning it handles the lower gear changes even better (had some over revving issues before causing turbo underboost) and also fixed the (apparently common) 2nd gear down shift jerk.

Service was expensive at nearly £450 but most of that is the oil at nearly £40 a litre. WELL WORTH IT and no regrets :)
