Ok my A3 indicator recently developed a life of their own,
indicate left, I get left indicator light come on, indicate right I get either left or a right lights come on. If I just hold the indicator lightly to the right (dont fully depress), the right indicator works fine.

So, indicator stalk issue, source replacement and set about changing...

I've youtubed this to death but cant find a video with the same configuration as mine...

.......In short, I've got the steering wheel off succesfully but cant figure out what I need to take off next get at the indicator stalk (which is still firmly attached!). See picture!

Yes the steering ecu needs removing as the stalk slides off towards you.
You need a small screwdriver, like those precision ones and feed it into that small square hole just below where you've removed the small screw. There is a locking tab in there about halfway down the ecu that holds the ecu up in the middle.
Once that unclips you can pull the ecu down a tad and remove the angle sensor

Thanks, that worked a treat (there are two clips, one around the back just behind the cable clip!).

Anyone reading this, precision screwdrivers were too short for me. Good old straightened wire coathanger did the trick nicely!

Normally comes off dead easy if you have an M12 spline bit?

Have exactly the same problem on my 2009 8p. Can’t believe the whole steering wheel has to come off to change this out!

Before I take everything off I’m going to get the new stalk, is 8P0953513A the common part number? Or does anyone know if there’s different variants?

for a 2009 youll want 8P0953513E.
the A version is for the older cars, the differences are the way the high beam stays on (where it clicks to keep high beam on, rather than just flash), and the images on the stalk look different.

Nice one, thank you!

I successfully changed this stalk out yesterday, thanks for this thread all!! Just one thing I can add is that finding both ECU retaining clips is a pain, the rear most one I gave up on, and I managed to do it by just releasing the front one, I managed to get it just low enough to clear the stalk connector.
