Autobild reports that Audi is anticipating the facelift of the A4 to MY 2019 because the outcome was not what Audi expected.
After purchased my Audi A3 8v in 2015, I was "angry and sad" with the facelift of 2016... Now I intended an upgrade for a A4 in 2018 but with this news, if true, I will keep my actual car until then.

My question for you is what do you think about this facelift...

I don't really know, it seems very quick to have a facelift to be honest. I'll be rather annoyed at having the S4 come in and then have a facelift the next year, especially if there is a new S4 engine with twin turbos! I'd be quite surprised at that part happening though to be honest, surely they won't have taken all the time to develop the new 3.0L V6T and then switch after a year of production?

If this is true it would be interesting to know what Audi's expectation was and why they feel they have not achieved it.

That too...

I'm wondering that too now that you've mentioned it. I wonder if it's just because the design isn't revolutionary, just a slight evolution I'd say. That said, if they did something ridiculous to the exterior to make it look more edgy I don't think that I'll be all that worried. If there's new technology and stuff then I might be a little more annoyed by the update.

On the B8/8.5 the face lift was 4 years 2008 -2012 & 2012-2016.
So 2019 would only be a year early as the B9 was launched in 2016?
I'm sure the S4 wouldn't be available until 2020.

Personally that would fit quite well for us as our B9 arrived May 2016 and so would be looking to replace either May 2019 or 2020, so a facelift B9 (or B9.5) around then is ideal.

I can understand why people ordering now for 2018 delivery being miffed, but guess there always are going to be standard specification changes from model year to model year - and a mild facelift variant 3-4 years after introduction would probably fit into that model cycle. A new car design is only ever going to be new for a finite amount of time, although 3-4 years for a revamp seems relatively short but not really in the way car makers need to keep people buying new cars year after year.

Some B9's were around late 2015 I think, so it's pretty much on schedule if its a late 2019 facelift.

It's all well and good deciding that they didn't sell enough, I'm just not entirely sure that it's all because of the looks. If it looked bad then I could understand it, but just because it doesn't look completely different than the previous generation? Don't know about that.

That's a fairly cool rendering but looks to be something closer to an RS model with the squared off arches and the more concave wheels.

Yes I wouldn't call it "Audi understandably would want to try something else with the facelift."

Completely agree, every version of the A4 from B5 to the B9 have all been more evolutionary rather than revolutionary in the looks department, you can see the progression but it's hardly like the designers throw away the rulebook each time and introduce something radical, they do tend to be fairly safe with what's supposed to be their volume seller in the company car stakes.

I'd go so far as to say that most non Audi fans / regular car buying public would struggle to see massive differences from B8.5 to B9 in the looks department, even though I'd guess every single panel is different.

Interior is much more noticeable a change for even your average Joe.

I would normally agree but Audi put a fair amount of effort into the 2nd gen V6T used in the 2015 B8.5s and then dropped it in favour of the B9's turbo V6T, so there is precedence.

These weren't a complete overhaul/different setup as compared to the ones that had been in the B8 S4's from the beginning though were they? I thought that it was more of a tweak than a complete overhaul? And there were no changes, as far as I'm aware, at the time the B8 was facelifted?

In my mind it's like introducing the B8 one year with the supercharged engine and then swapping to the new turbo engine when they facelift a year later? It feels like that much of a change to me.

All that said, maybe it's just a de-tuned version of the RS engine which they've already developed?

I think that Audi don't sell as much as they don't discount anywhere near as heavily as BMW.... could get 23-24% off a 340i... but depreciates v.quickly

Thats because the 3 sieries is due a completely new model next year. I could get a well specd 335d xdrive for a good chunk less than a 190tfsi stronic at the moment.

In Portugal Audi increased the price of B9 compared with previous generation and one year after it is difficult to see them on portuguese roads. Most cars of this segment in this country are companies cars and most of them are Mercedes and BMW, companies with more competitive prices and/or higher discounts. When A4 was launched my dealer said that at this price we won't sell a lot and he was not wrong one year after.
I also think Audi is more focused on technology instead of a revolutionary design. Time will tell but I think they will not overcome this situation with new version of the virtual cockpit or with new drivers assistant solutions...

Officially launched in the UK in November 2015.

Officially launched in the UK in November 2015.
And Avants arrived as demonstrators in January 2016

The UK models were press released in September 2015 and most saloon demos arrived in November though a quick search shows a saloon registered in early October.

If we assume usual pattern it will be announced around Sep 2019 (Frankfurt motor show) and we will get saloons just before the end of the year and avants in 2020 (so MY2020). Hoping for a plug-in hybrid.

I think and hope you are right but the news (if true) pointed for MY2019, therefore maybe it will be announced around Sep 2018 (Frankfurt motor show) and not 2019.

No it wasn't but there were a lot of "tweaks" if you look - the whole supercharger, timing chains, fuel injection, crankcase breather, oil filtering/cooling, vacuum and secondary air systems. Although most of it was done to meet EU6 emissions, it looks like enough work was done that I had expected it to be carried over to the B9 so was a bit surprised when it was announced with a new engine. I have been following the threads about the B9 orders going on hold, and clearly there is an issue with emissions and/or consumption specifications. It it turns out that the single turbo V6 isn't conforming as well as they want/need then I wouldn't be surprised as you if they decide that it would be easier to use a de-tuned biturbo instead.

If they do switch engines then hopefully the new one won't be as good as the old one so people will be looking for my version when it comes to me selling it. :tearsofjoy:

That's a cunning plan....

I'm just trying to find a potential silver lining but I don't know who would prefer my engine if there's a twin turbo unit out there...

That said, I saw today that the 3.0T and the 2.9TT engines from the S and RS models are now in the Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne S models respectively so maybe the engine development wasn't a total waste of money to the VAG group.

I understand the B9 S4 3.0 V6 T is to be the future basis for mild hybrid technology (48V elec system etc), thus its inclusion in the 2019 Porsche Cayenne make sense. With the elec compressor to spin before the turbo takes over + ancilliaries, incl. alternator for the 12v system + a/c compressor, taken off the crank and run electrically, should increase power by 50kw, but with very little increase in torque. Don't manufacturers have to commence mild/full hybrid vehicles in 2020 for Euro 6 emissions? Do not see how B9.5 (?) S4 ICE can have 2 turbos for 520nm, when B9 S4 has 500nm now with 1 turbo. Why would Audi de-tune 80nm??

As for the RS4, based on Mr. Winkelmann's disclosure that 2 x RS models will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, I believe the B9 RS4 will be one of them (track tested at the Ring months ago) & is likely to have 600kw from its 2.9 V6 Twin Turbo. So the 'next' RS4 would be likely in 2023. Accordingly, that should definitely be a mild/full hybrid ICE

When were the first deliveries? Early 2016?

3.5 ish years before a facelift is industry standard especially with the German big 3, it seems like a non story to me.

Timing about right, probably part of the reason for the good discounts/scrappage/low finance offers. The A4 seems to have the lowest pcp rate of the entire range at the moment. I'm still happy getting a hefty discount and £6k scrappage on my old B6 that I bought 18 months ago for £500 and has given me 14,000 trouble free miles @ 55mpg. Having said that I wouldn't risk going very far in her just now as all is not well but so long as we make the dealers on handover day I don't care - owes me nothing.

I don’t suppose either will add value but would think the matrix led’s are more desirable.

All looks like Dynamic Steering and Light and Vision Pack in UK is now discontinued. Will have to see what becomes standard for the UK MY2019 S4 - but looks like range options will be released in Wk. 27 (July 27th). Anyone think this could be a minor facelift or waaaay too early?

Way too early and the teaser mule pics would already be in the car mags... which there not. Next year would be my money.

makes me wonder if me getting my new car this year is a wise move, but expect that discounts will be good because of it ....

I suspect another issue with lower than expected sales for the A4 is the general decline of the saloon car segment. Buyers are increasingly shifting to cross-overs and 4wds. Jaguar, for example, is making more headway with the E-Pace and F-Pace than the XE. Good news for us, though, in looking for good deals on the A4.

Ford USA have taken a decision to stop selling saloons and hatchbacks, so no more Fusions, Fiesta's, Focus's and Fusions in that country after 2020, although the Mustang will remain. Seems like vans with windows, i.e.. x-overs. are being promoted by all manufacturers much to my dismay. Another thing inherited from the USA. However they'll always be a market for executive saloons..

Have to agree with the above. The exec saloons will always be a thing. The A4 has been around a long time. It stems from the Audi 80.
