New model naming structure

Announced today all new Models will be designated and badged representing a particular output range as follows.

• 25 – 80kW (107bhp) and below
• 30 – 81-96kW (109-129bhp)
• 35 – 110-120kW (148-161bhp)
• 40 – 125-150kW (168-201bhp)
• 45 – 169-185kW (227-248bhp)
• 50 – 210-230kW (282-308bhp)
• 55 – 245-275kW (329-369bhp)

For example the badge on back would say 45 TFSI - denoting 227-248bhp.

S, RS and R8 cars will retain there names.

Where would the A4 218 fit into that then? Would it get a 40 or 45 badge?

It's all very strange and confusing when you are used to engine size but Audi have been using this scheme on Asian//Indian market cars for a while now

I thought as much, seems strange that after all the years of model naming we are now having to change to this confusing system seeing as no other manufacturers are as far as I understand...

I dunno - BMW badges bear no relation to engine size and just give an indication of the rank in the power/spec ladder

I mean, a 340i is a 3.0 petrol turbo as is the 335i, and a 330i is a 2 litre

I don't know anything really about Mercedes badging to comment

A relatively minor tweak which distinguishes the engine power output?

I've never been able to understand BMW's labelling and I don't think an ordinary punter understands them and the new Audi ones either..

Does seem like an odd step, I mean I can understand from a standardising across all territories point of view, but your average punter will take the 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and assume thats engine size (minus the decimal point) it's highly likely I'd go for badge delete next time around.

Also as someone else asked, in the new numbers and corresponding power outputs, there is nowhere for the B9 3.0TDI 218...? Strange.

I noticed this on cars in **** when I was watching YouTube reviews. They had a4 30 or a4 40 on them instead of TFSI etc. Seems stupid but looks like they're doing it on all their models.
