Start up judder, help!

To be honest I sold my 8P 2.0 TDI because of the same issue, but mine had puffs of blue smoke 10 sec after starting and weird metallic noises during that period, never got to the bottom of it.
Seems like there's a lot of causes for this judder on start up. I recently paid for a manual carbon scrape and it sorted the issue out it for a short period of time but now its back again.. feel like banging my head against a wall.. Can't think of anything else that could cause it apart from already mentioned on here?

Well, I have never gotten to the bottom of it, I've let the new owner have headaches with it.

Possible list of causes is long but here it goes:
  • Glow plug(s)
  • Injector(s)
  • Battery
  • Starter motor
  • Cracked cylinder head
  • Bad compression
  • Timing
  • Engine mounts
  • DMF
  • Gearbox (if clutch is not pressed when starting)

Add bad earthing to that list, that was my cause

Hi, did you manage to get to the bottom of this issue mate? I have the exact same problem starting the car, but otherwise drives absolutely fine...and it's very intermittent seems worse if the car has been sat for awhile before starting.

Mine has the exact same symptom of metallic noises when sat overnight and smoke. I'm more than convinced from my own research that it's the exhaust cam advanced timing causing this. I'll be adjusting the cams sometime this week and get back

This seems very likely, a very experienced mechanic asked me if I ever changed camshafts (which I did) and he said this could be the cause since I've put reinforced camshafts with the new cylinder head. It's worth a check for sure.

Not sure what you mean by metallic noises lads? I'm getting a little smoke from the exhaust and the violent juddering on start up from mine. Getting the DMF checked today.. (clutch press to start) I've noticed a knocking sound that can be felt through the bottom of the car while holding on biting point.. it's exaggerated when holding the clutch going up an incline/hill.

I would advise checking for axial play inside the gearbox as well as this can show the same symptoms as failing DMF, people change DMF and it continues happening = axial play inside gearbox.

Thanks I'll take a look at this also today.

probably injector leaks into combustion chamber, if you starting it and judder, turn it off and start again, should start normally.

A few things i noticed this morning as car took a few trys to start up...

1st attempt - judder
2nd attempt - automatic lights failure symbol appeared
3rd attempt - automatic lights symbol gone, car started but radio was off?

My car used to do this as well. Randomly throwing auto lights error when they were working properly.

Surely everything is pointing to this being electrical (more likely than not)? There may be other problems as well. The OP hasn't said that he's changed the (sounds very old) battery or even checked the terminal and earthing connections. This would be a good start.....Theres no point changing glow plugs yet until they are tested with enough power!

I do feel there may be more than one issue here

Had it looked at today, apparently its 99.9% the dual mass flywheel?

So ive looked back at my old paper work for the car and noticed i already have had the dmf done before so as per my last message the garage i went this morning must be talking rubbish?

how you could get done dmf then. automatic got torque converter not clutch itself (unless dsg that got dual clutch but still net dmf). can be also bolt from flywheel loose

I changed 2 DMFs in 2 years on old 2.0 TDI manual. And I've went with the most expensive DMFs, Sachs or LUK they were I think.

PS: DSG is a twin shaft twin clutch preselector automatic and does need a DMF to protect the transmission from too much sudden torque transfer.

sachs is provider of the oem parts, luk is cheaper and seen much more negative opinion about it.

Just found old bills, one was Sachs, the other one was LUK. LUK was more expensive though @700 Euros.
lol 2 years ago when I was looking for mine (manual) sachs was more expensive (like luk was 300£, sachs 400£) as well the old one (audi oem) was sachs as well. But as far as I looked after it in forums, opinions etc, in 90% sachs was better quality and more durable. however dunno about costs of automatic ones.
