The moderately informational brake thread....

There are an awful lot of people on various FB groups that seem to think that the 18Z set up is THE set up to have and i've watched Prawn lead many a horse to water, unfortunately these horses have promptly dive bombed into said water and drowned themselves; ignoring every piece of advice offered, makes me chuckle.

Also I feel it's time Prawn was given an 'oracle' badge, seeing as he is used as a proverbial font of all knowledge.

There's still a set of these on Ebay if anybody has an LCR setup and wants some really good track pads.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ferodo-FC...-Maserati-C2-208GTI-Leon-Volvo-/222521554342?
I offered him £140 so with the postage £148 for a set of Ferodo DS1.11 pads.
Apparently a very good track/race compound with a long life and kind to the discs.Hard to get any decent pad compounds for some calipers at reasonable prices.
Hopefully with the car going on a severe diet and some decent cooling from some TTRS brake ducts and ducting hoses these will do me for a bit.

As tuffty said, if only!

I have a very in depth and very detailed knowledge of a very small field of things directly relavent to my car and things I've done.

Outside of that remit I havn't a clue

Like this big turbo I've just bought, so much to learn still!

Thanks though :racer: , but my wife would request you don't feed my ego any more

After reading all the pages it seems like there's little info on rear brakes.

Who's actually done a 996 rear caliper upgrade on their s3? I can get a set of rear calipers here local since a guy was drink driving and binned it into a wall lol. Is the person still capable of supplying 330x25mm discs?

It's me again! lol The only rear upgrades off the top of my head are,

ECS Stage1 rears, originally 308mm?(I have a set), but it's now listed as a 306mm 2 piece disc!? Retains the original caliper, but spaced out.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-par...s-drilled-slotted-rotors-306x22/mk4tts1rvkxs/

Tarox also does a similar kit, but for a bit more money and 300mm 2 piece discs.

http://www.tarox.co.uk/product/tarox-brake-kit-audi-s3-8l-all-models-rear-disc-upgrade-kit-kmau0308/

Third alternative is using S4 brake discs redrilled to 5x100 and the original calipers spaced out again, I think @S3 Paul supplies this kit?

Don't see many members using upgraded rear calipers, but I have seen someone use a double caliper setup on the rears at a car show sometime ago.

Just a something I've seen in passing; For specific details try pm'ing the op of that thread, although the thread seems to have died in 2015

Few thoughts though

The hydraulic handbrake is nice bit engineering, but not sure if it'd pass a uk mot; wouldn't pass MSA scrutineering
Far safer to use cable brake caliper: eg wilwood mech spot

Setup on a 914

Pedal travel: mk.1 996 had a 25.4mm MC, which was upgraded to 27mm in later models to address the 'soft' pedal of the early cars ..

imo the cost of getting of custom carriers made, plus spot caliper or a hydro handbrake as in that thread is probably going to equal one of stock caliper+big disc setups

imho bigger rear calipers only required if planning on using a turning/cutting brake setup alongside some major weight redistrobution; and then with some more suitable calipers

Will the 18z calipers fit under the oem 17" s3 wheels in diameter?

No need 18" there was Simone who sells them in the for sale section I'm sure they said the 17z calipers would fit under 17" alloys

That sucks.

Anyone know where I can buy 2 piece rotors 5x100 / 320mm x 32mm? To fit my 993 turbo calipers.

The porsche oem ones are different bolt pattern and have a higher hat so they will abs not fit... no idea where to get the right sized hat ...

This kit is only 320mm? Seems small.

322 mm x 32 mm is correct size, not the largest but they have a great bite. From what I understand these was popular used some years back, even sold as a big brake kit on ECS before all these fancy 6 and 8 potters took over.

The kit I have on is old, pre 2011 from when the car was based in Germany and was at that time bought as a Movit big brake kit, searching on the web i find this picture from the Movit kit back then:

Anyways my calipers is binned and I am buying new Big red from porsche, the only thing is I have zero clue where to get the right disc hat like the one I have. The ones I have is corroded so I need new ones by next season probably.

If anyone know where I can buy a full custom disc like above, or if possible buy the stock disc like pic below, and get a machined billet hat like above and put that on the porsche disc thanks.

If it's for your S3, then LCR are easier to find and are a direct fit.

Yeah been looking into it 17z bad pedal travel 18z will need 18" wheels but the laces are on eBay for £400 and need refurbishing, refurbished 18z are 450-500 mmm... decisions decisions, stupid really buying brake calipers for a car that doesn't even drive haha

I got RS3 brembo calipers for £300

I have the chance to buy these !

LCR’s , now I’ve had 2 monumental refurb quotes (in my eyes anyway) !
Add pipes discs and pads and we’re looking at big money :(
It would be cheaper to buy new ready to go calipers if such a thing is available !
I was looking at Renault sport clio ones which I know have been done (£300 the pair new) but I can’t find the seller anymore :(
Has anyone successfully fitted anything from wilwood ? Looking at rally designs website there’s SO MUCH choice !!

I have no experience if the wilwood calipers but I've been running the clio brembo calipers a while now and they work fantastic, combined with the LCR 323mm discs it's fantastic value for money.

The pad sweep is 100% bang on.
I studied dimensions etc and suspected it would work so I took the plunge and tried as it seemed nobody else had tried this combination?

It's shame your so far away from me otherwise you could have had a go in mine to see for yourself...

There “was “ a seller doing new silver ones for £129 each but he’s disappeared :(
Did you use the LCR mounts and machine some off and pack the radial bolt holes with alloy tube ?
I’d buy some today if I could find new silver ones

Yes mate, LCR mounts. I removed 1.5mm from the off-set and sleeved calipers with aluminium tube and then it all bolts up perfectly.

It's a pretty simple conversion and very good value for money.

Why do those need a refurb? These calipers very rarely go wrong.

Worst case you get a new set of dust seals and fit them yourself and off you go.

Seeing as this is a brake thread, I nah as well add my latest offering too :racer:

An enviable brake setup to say the least!

You are just showing off now.!!!

you can also use cayenne, q7, touareg 6 pots on the front. The 17zr/l's work better because of the piston sizes and adapters are £70 from lee (cnc-machinist from r32oc/jack-the-lad-uk on ebay. just got mine from him and could not be happier, really helpful guy and very very good product. work with r32 discs or 350x32 ecs'. My calipers are off for painting but will get pics when ive got them back.
And if you are after different adapters im sure lee would be up for a challange and cheaper than most :)

tom

Anyone got any experience with the 17Z calipers are they worth getting or am I better off shelling out for the 18z

17Z will have loads more travel. I posted the exact numbers further back. 18Z is already a fair bit more but I like a bit more modulation than the standard VAG "brake switch" anyway and find the 18Zs fine personally.

I also tried the 18z and it works ok, it's different than the stock but, the travel its not exaggerated...

Holy thread revival Batman!
I have a 2005 Audi A3 S-Line with 312 mm front disc setup. Would something like https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253610795645 fit? What are the options to move to a nicer brake setup without breaking the bank. Don't mind a used kit at all.
You’d be better off asking in the 8p section this thread is the 8l based. People there will be better clued up on which brake upgrades work and what you need adapter/spacer wise

Oops! I searched google to reach this thread, didn’t pay attention to the forum category. Apologies for that.

Here's some caliper piston size calculations. Thanks to @superkarl for measuring his TTRS calipers.

Stock S3 ATE's
54mm
2290.22mm2

18Z Cayenne/Touareg/Q7
30/34/38mm
706.86mm2
907.92mm2
1134.11mm2
Total 2748.89mm2
18.2044% larger than stock

TTRS
40/44mm
1256.64mm2
1520.53mm2
Total 2777.17mm2
1.0235% larger than 18Z
19.219% larger than stock

17Z Cayenne/Touareg/Q7

34/36/38mm
907.92
1017.88
1134.11
Total 3059.91mm2
9.6877% larger than TTRS
10.7086% larger than 18Z
28.7728% larger than stock

I'm not sure if my calculations were correct here. I've only accounted for 3 pistons for the 18z and 17z and 2 for the TTRS/RS3. I've recalculated with all the pistons and added in RS6 calipers...

Stock S3 ATE - 1 pot
54mm x 1 = 2290.22mm

18Z Cayenne/Touareg/Q7 - 6 pots
30/34/38mm
706.86mm² * 2 = 1413.726mm²
907.92mm² * 2 = 1815.84mm²
1134.11mm² * 2 = 2268.22mm²
Total 5497.78mm²
140.0547% larger than stock

TTRS/RS3 - 4 pots
40/44mm
1256.64mm² * 2 = 2513.28mm²
1520.53mm² * 2 = 3041.06mm²
Total 5554.34mm²
1.028779% larger than 18Z
142.5243% larger than stock

C5 RS6 - 8 pots
28/32mm
615.75mm² * 4 = 2463mm²
804.25mm² * 4 = 3217mm²
5680mm²
2.262375% larger than TTRS/RS3
3.31443% larger than 18Z
148.011% larger than stock

17Z Cayenne/Touareg/Q7 - 6 pots
34/36/38mm
907.92mm² * 2 = 1815.84mm²
1017.88mm² * 2 = 2035.76mm²
1134.11mm² * 2 = 2268.22mm²
Total 6119.82mm²
7.74331% larger than RS6
10.18087% larger than TTRS/RS3
11.31439% larger than 18Z
167.2154% larger than stock

Any thoughts @Prawn on the maths here? What are the size of the pistons on your new brakes?
