My S4 thread

I'm on Conti 3's and they've been great but starting to tramline really badly now at around 3-3.5 mil. Just coming up to 11000 miles.

Think I will replace them with the new Conti 6's given the recent reviews.

Thanks all for your thoughts. My car has the standard 18" wheels. I think certain tyres suit certain cars and wheels. I'm sticking with what works for me. :)

I'm a Michelin man (not exactly, although I did put on a bit over Xmas :)). My B5 was delivered with Pirellis which tramlined. I switched to Pilot Sports and thought them fantastic, so I stayed with them ever since (including PS2 and IIRC PS3). I was not too happy when my B8.5 was delivered with Pirelli P-Zeros, however they don't seem too bad, although I think I have occasionally sensed tramlining. Of course they are a fair bit wider so maybe that makes them better. I'll switch to Michelins when they need replacing. The trouble is that we can only choose tyres based on review and recommendation and then experience. So its difficult to switch brands once we find one that we like.

Mine are wearing at a similar rate to @scotty76's. I'm thinking of changing my forum name to Miss Daisy, before he does :).

It might be old news to most, but I've just discovered that you can view your digital dervice record when you login to 'my Audi'.

Although I've never had any letters from Audi, nor has it ever been mentioned on paperwork during service collection. it appears my car has been subject to a couple of recall notices:-

May 2015, campaign 69k5 - Airbag Control Unit
June 2016, 24co recall - ECM software update, Emissions.....hmm?

A quick google suggests nothing too onerous, but I aways specifically ask if there's any recalls or update everytime my car goes in.

@scotty76 @jdp1962 @Hear-Vier - After reading this thread I had a look at my old paperwork for my old B8 A4 2.0TFSI quattro (yes I still have it all lol)
http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/thread...fsi-quattro-s-line-saloon-sold-oct-14.225569/
I replaced all four Pirelli P-Zero's with just over 2mm left on at 9000 miles for this car
I'm not expecting to get any more outta the tyres on the S4 TBH

Just wondering how you lot drive to get so many miles outta your tyres as you do?

Whilst reading this great blog, I noticed that people wanted to supply there own oil.
I've just ordered 20 liters of Fuchs 5w30 , delivered for £96. On Opie oils, it's £96 for 9 liters.
The website is called "LRT LUBRICANTS ".

Brad.

Mine (Conti 3's) are absolutely shot on the S4 at 10500. Fronts are now on the wear markers so got a full set of Goodyear Asymmetric 3's going on today. Been doing a lot of reading and was going to go for the Conti 6's but the goodyears seem to come out very well in 'Road driving' tests.

Let's see how they get on.

I got 11k from my Conti 3s and was glad to get rid! That said, I had the exact same tyres on 19s on my previous A4 3.0 TDi and had no tramline issues and got 18k from them!

Apart from a few early issues and my paranoia over road noise, the Michelin Super sports I have on now are really good.

Don't get me started on P zeros, rubbish!

Nice slippers @Bristle Hound......Thought you'd have better legs tho!

That's new to me, very useful to know, thanks for mentioning it.

Just signed up to myAudi and I can see my digital service history but it makes no mention of the recalls, that I can see. The airbag one was mentioned and applied when I had my Jun'15 service but haven't heard of the latter. Perhaps released after my early Jun'16 service.

Incidentally, myAudi also shows a really snazzy picture of the car - it looks better than reality as the wheels fill the arches well and it looks like they are on spacers too. Same as the configurator showed - another sales trick I guess.

@Bristle Hound, Col, mate, all I can do is refer you to the musing of the late great LJK Setright. He said that when driving, your inputs may be quick, but they should never be sudden. :)

My car is used 99% of the time for commuting, I spend a fair amount of time in traffic. Earlier in this thread I posted my stats for the first 2 years which showed something like a 36mph average. I think a lack of back road hooning is what keeps my tyres going.

@jdp1962 - Not my fault, honest Jeff :D
I blame the driving instructors from my previous occupation
It was all about 'making progress' & 'vehicle sympathy' didn't really figure TBH. Hard to change 30 years of driving habits if I'm being honest
As the saying goes, you can't teach a old dog new tricks lol :laugh::laugh:

Quick coating update. Kamikaze ISM and this is wash number 2. The gloss and reflections are awesome.

And a quick shout out to @DeanoC. I never would have believed this is possible if he hadn't posted it. Mirror drips be gone!

OK so another quick coating update. Last wash revealed some water spotting which is a known issue on coatings. The main culprits were the horizontal surfaces, bonnet, boot and roof. A wash with Bilt Hamber Auto Wash followed by Carpro Spotless fixed the issues. I then followed up with Gyeon Cure which left this.

Last week coming to a stop at a set of traffic lights I had a warning come up on the DIS that said something like "Stop/Start error" and the EPC light came on. A restart of the car cleared the EPC light and stop/start has been working fine ever since. Part of me wonders if it just got itself confused as it was one of those situations where I came to a stop and the lights immediately changed to green so stop/start tried to engage but then I immediately set off again. I'm undecided on whether to book it in to Audi. I reckon they'll say no fault found and charge me for the diagnostic. Searching on the forum and on Google shows this happens sometimes. I'm inclined to wait and see if it happens again.

I have VCDS and I think you're not far from me @scotty76 ?

Thank you both @Dippy and @Keef for the offers of help. I may just stump up for the Carista dongle. I have an Android phone, is the official one the best one to get?

Never mind. Forgot there was a Carista sticky. Will get the official one as the others look to be lucky dip. :)

@scotty76, get Carista fired up and make it your very first job to disable stop/start.
Now that my car is producing more CO2 I really have to keep my stop/start enabled and do my bit to limit damage to the environment - especially since the diesel drivers are clearly doing far more damage than we were previously lead to believe...

Thanks for the suggestion. All scanned and no faults found so going with "got confused" as the diagnosis for now. My goodness there are a lot of bits on the detailed scan. The list went on for several pages!

So 3300 miles used 2mm of tread so say further 4mm before swapping would suggest a probable life of 9900 miles for the fronts.

1mm used on the rears would give 19800 miles for the rears (I doubt that somehow).

Funny looking back at this old post of mine. The rear tyres have now done over 18k miles so maybe I'll get close to this after all.

Mine has just done over 20,000 and I've still got around 4mm left on all four original tyres.

It's getting to service time of year so I decided to get quotes so I could see how many major organs need to go on EBay this year to pay for it. :D This year I'm due: oil change service, brake fluid change, MOT. As I've stated before I'm sticking with the dealer network whilst the warranty exists to avoid any wriggle room despite block exemption etc etc.

On with the quotes:
Newbury Audi - £327.40
Reading Audi - £401.12 (today's comedy entry)
Basingstoke Audi - £353.99

So left kidney and spleen it is!

As an aside someone has broken the boot floor handle spring mechanism. As I've only just noticed this it's either the tyre fitters or the dealers but as I don't know which I can't go back and shout at the offenders. :(

@scotty76 - I had my 2nd service at MDM Technik in Marlow for £318. No MOT but I did get the wheels rotated (although I'm not sure if this was actually priced). On that basis your dealer quotes don't look too bad, assuming that the cabin/pollen filter is included?
