As the title suggests really, I'm after an avant and I want to get as low a mileage as I can, but what are people's thoughts on a car with say 130k on the clock? Is this just going to give you problem after problem or are they fairly good? obviously service history is a good indicator of how it's been treated, I'm also a bit concerned with the auto box issues, please help!!!

What's your budget? I've just picked up a 59 plate a6 avant Le mans with only 38,500 miles on the clock, with full audi service history, and the Cambelt changed recently, and also the multitronic gearbox oil changed recently, I'd say don't rush and look for the right car within your budget, I was looking for a month and travelled from Leicestershire to Guildford for a car, it's well worth the travelling for the right car

Thanks for the reply, do you mind me asking what you paid for it? I'm quite willing to wait, like you say, for the right car to turn up.

Different engines have different problems at different ages, what sort of engine are you looking at?

With a higher mileage car it's even more important to be sure the car has a full service history, you need to check the service intervals for the various components (engine oil, cambelt, gearbox oil etc) and make sure these have been done at the right times. If an engine is looked after properly then it should have a long life.

I paid £11k for it, with its low mileage, full history, it also has about every extra going including bose and soft close doors, this is the only one I saw advertised with soft close doors in the 4 weeks I was looking

Just seen the pictures on your other post, lovely car, but a bit more than I have to spend unfortunately. I think I might be looking for a car that doesn't exist, if you know what I mean. Soft close doors, I didn't even know there was such a thing!! Ive been looking for ages with no joy, my patience is wearing a bit thin now to be honest, it might be a case of it's not meant to be, time to look at something else☹️

It's only about 8k max, and for that I'm concerned I'm just buying someone else's problems. That's why reluctantly I think I should lower my aim.

Mine's been in the shop for over a week now getting the rear end damage from a shunt sorted out. Currently cheating on her with a younger model, miss her though.

Thanks for that, nice cars especially the s line but not auto, which is one stipulation. It's like I said, I don't think it exists. I have certain boxes that need ticking but it always seems like you have to compromise somewhere so therefore it's not the car I want!! Aaaarrgghhh!!!

Compromise is not always a bad thing, I had my heart set on a C7 last time I went shopping, but by compromising and going for a C6 (no regrets btw) I was able to get everything else I wanted (3.0 V6 TDi, Quattro, adaptive cruise, side assist and power close doors to name but a few).

I know what you mean, I think it's my budget that's causing the problem, yours doesn't sound like an 8 grand car, I think I'll stick with the vw badge and get the spec I want with the money I've got.

As above compromise is key for the right car, but finding the right one is about patience and how far your willing to travel, I spent £60 on a train ticket and 3 hours on the train, 2 hours looking at and test driving the car and another 3 hours driving home from Guildford to Leicestershire, I spent 4 weeks looking every hour of every day to find one that I wanted with the right spec, what specifically are you looking for within your budget of £8k? Other than it needs to be an auto

You're right mine was more expensive but the principle is the same, if you can't have everything you want then you need to choose something to compromise on so that you can get everything else you want, if that thing is the badge from Audi to VW then that's not a bad thing to compromise on.

My old 2003 Passat has bi-xenons(factory fitted) heated half leather seats, and factory privacy glass in the back, that's all I really want. It's not much, but finding one with my budget always leads to something that's been to the moon and back! I give up!!

No xenons! 2 boxes unticked, see what I mean!! It's driving me nuts, it really is. It's got to the point that looking for one is just giving me a headache. Cheers though, I appreciate everyone's help.

I guess you need to have a look and see what you think.
I traveled a couple of hours to look at mine before I bought it, also had a video from the dealer emailed before I set off.

Looks quite nice actually, going to give them a call tomorrow, slightly the wrong side of 100k but not bad.

For nearly 70bhp less than the 3.0 I would have expected better mpg stats

Front wheel drive auto = multitronic if I'm correct? From what remember these are not as reliable as the tiptronic box in the Quattro models

I thought multitronic was only on the 2.0?
I could be wrong though, I only looked for a manual, so didn't take much notice of the autos :grinning:

Fuel consumption and VED are better on the facelift models.

I've read somewhere the tiptronic on the Quattro is a better box. It looks good so far.

The tiptronic is generally considered to be more reliable. That 3.0TDi is a nice looking car, and is stated as Full Service History, looks like a good option!

No xenons or privacy glass...
Ah just read no xenons, privacy glass isn't a big issue as it's something you can add yourself relatively cheap, I'm sure he will have no issues finding what he wants within budget, it's all about patience and waiting for the right one to come along
