Hello Guys

FL S3 Saloon owner here, and "maybe" looking to upgrade to a 17 S4... whats most important to me is driving dynamics and fun factor, how is it compared to the S4?

Any first hand experiences?

Thanks!
JC

Interested in folks thoughts too as thinking of upsizing in future.... a plus for me in the Torsten diff 4wd vs Haldex and that behind but isn't the DSG gearbox now replaced with old Sokol auto? Mmmmm

Well a good spec S4 is around £50k easily but lf l where in the market for this size of car l would be looking at a S5 Sportback also, my other slight concern with the S4 etc is the lack of colour choices no Ara blue crystal yet.... etc best choice being Navarra

I drove the new S5, it didn't feel as quick as the S3 and then I looked at the specs... slower than the S3! The S4 is slower again!

The big seller if the interior, which is stunning but I don't think I could pay £10k more for less performance. It was very quiet, you hear the V6 with the windows up but with them down it isn't as loud as the S3 IMO.

Held the road very, very well.

To be honest, if I was looking for a bigger car, I'd also be considering a switch to the dark side - a C43 AMG.

S3 (8V) 4 door s-tronic:
0-60 mph 4.7 secs
Torque 380 Nm, 280 ft-lb

s4 (B9) 4 door auto:
0-60 mph 4.5 secs
Torque 500 Nm, 369 ft-lb

Compared to the previous model, that looked mean - especially the C63 :smilingimp:

Your too young for this type of car anyway lol as the S5 is more akin to the older driver in my opinion but if Ara blue was available on it plus them 20" rotors,l would seriously consider getting one

Hmm.. sure my source put the S4 at 4.8/9. The S3 is 4.6, in sportback form.

Oh well.

See I'd love an S4, but still too subtle. The RS is compulsory.

I'd have the new RS4 if it was V8.

Those are pre-facelift figures.
S3 0-60 - 4.5 sec for 3 door and 4.6 for 4/5 door.
400 NM torque.

Thought S4 was 4.7 seconds 0-60.

Yeah that's what I mean, should have mentioned the S3 too. Amazing cars, very sporty looking cars and expensive looking cars (all S series), but lack the RS body kits and although the RS isn't in your face either, it has that something else over a 'common' Audi.
The S3 is an S Line with big wheels and all the trimmings, after all and I stand by it.. great car and an all you can ever need car, but it lacks that pure evil feel you get from an RS.. haha. Just sitting in an RS, like that TT RS last week gives the feel of it being a serious car.

That's more like what I believed. The S3 is undoubtably quoted 4.6 for the sportback, roughly timed was around 4.5 on a launch (at 1000 miles, another 5000 on the clock now so need to try again).

In my had the S4 was 4.7, with the Avant closely behind at 4.9. I can remember driving the S5, getting in the S3 and thinking it was livelier and when I checked the figures the S3 was quicker.

The question is what would you rather throw around a back road when you fancy a bit of a hoon?

There are plenty where I live and the S3 fits the bill perfectly. I doubt I'd have the same fun in an S4 or S5.

No dsg and a huge premium over an S3 just doesn't make it appealing to me.

All very true but you can feel some attachment to the road through the S5's steering, you can't say the same about the S3's steering

I went from an 8P S3 to a B8 S4 - loved it but the fun factor just wasnt there

No being back in an 8V S3 has made it all fun again :)

If you wanted fun factor, wouldn't the S1 be the best? That's if you don't mind the sportback size and manual gearbox.
