S3 Sportback or M140i

An update for those that have commented or followed this short thread... so the decision was made... I'm off to the dark side and take delivery of my new BMW M140i tomorrow (on my birthday!) Feelings right now- nervous and excited! Got a good deal on a good spec car so couldn't say no...

I'm seriously looking at swapping wife's S3 for new m140i now. I haven't test driven it yet but have seen them, sat inside and have brother with 430i and mate with m4 who swear by BMW.

I prefer look of s3 sedan (which we have) and I think s3 interior slightly more appealing/more modern. Not looking at new s3 as find it underwhelming to drove (stock) I have stage 2 MK7R so I know all about the improvements tuning. Want more performance and more engaging drive stock.

As long as performance and drive are enjoyable will be ordering the m140i as can get deal where it's 10k AUD cheaper than we bought S3 sedan for.

140i is quicker than M2 in some comparisons! I had one pull out in front of me at a junction and it sounded great too.

TX.

Haha Audi forum indeed, for that I apologise! I'll get some photos up tomorrow! First impressions so far:
Great in-car tech
Engaging drive and feels steady so far (dry weather only so far)
Comfortable ride

So far so good... will put the pics up tomorrow!

If BMW would put an electric parking brake and digital display/speedometer on the 1 series, I'd be considering a move as I'm sick of Audi customer services... But I don't want to go back to manual handbrake and analogue speedometer

I just don't like the rear of the 1 series at all. I've tried to like it but I can't . 5 door is definitely better looking than the 3 door tho

If you want to, you could always still come to AITP. You may have to park in the big car parks with the others... but still

Glad you got sorted out. Am sure you'll love it. An happy birthday for tomorrow

I don't like the shape of the 1 series too, for me its a step down from my 8P A3. I've seen a lot of them in person and they look good in certain angles but awful in others.

I have a 135i which is basically a m140i and it's brilliant, excellent to drive fast, the noise is incredible, only issue is it's noisy at speed (I think due to the runshite tyres) and not much room in the back but I don't have many passengers anyway. For me I would go for the bm purely for the fact you get more than 4 cylinders but I'm sure that the s3 has its own credentials which makes it worthy.

Two things that I picked up on straight away!

I was really glad to get away from the electronic handbrake and back to a conventional one personally.

Speedo on the M2 is very poor. Especially when not lit. It's like going back to the 80s....I think the 140i is better?
But you have the option for a digital speedo on the OBC....although the font is quite small.

I am also learning the BMW/idrive way after years of VAG cars. I liken it to iTunes. Small fonts and complicated at first....but good once you persevere (I don't like iTunes btw).

Other main gripe is not mine, but some of the neighbours. Early morning cold start ups are very loud indeed!

My brother and his wife have just ordered a Golf GTD and most of the stuff it comes with I had to spec!
Just been pricing the new GTi up, two things that I'd order on the S3 at cost are on the GTi as standard: Folding mirrors and parking sensors. On a 3 year PCP with the same deposit the GTi came out at £30 less per month (after adding on the mirrors/sensors to the S3). Not a great difference but you also get the virtual dash, tinted rear windows and a few other little things free as well on the GTi.

Surely the performance of the S3 is well worth the extra over a GTI though?

I would say the golf GTI is a worthy alternative for people looking for a fast comfortable sporty hatchback other than the S3, the S3 is getting very expensive indeed for the standard equipment it offers, l also think given the new Road tax rates, you'll get a very nice spec GTI for less than £40k

Not doubting that. I just don't think they are comparable cars, the S3 is more than toys.

I agree the the extra performance is worth the £1 per day extra. But if anyone wanted the VC on the S3 which comes as standard on the GTi, it's an extra £1,395 which would bump the PCP price up another £40 on top of the £30, so £70 per month for similar spec is getting a lot! x12 = £840 per year. For me that difference would cover my insurance, tax and a service!

This is getting to be a bit of a habit...I agree with you again!!! :)

Fair points, may have to agree with you both on this one ;-)

The VW virtual cockpit has been heavily criticised so far, I thought they'd be like for like with the Audi set up but apparently not.

Your paying a lot for them 4 circles mate, that and perceived quality, brand snobbery is rife these days

Yeh I agree they are basically the same cars, especially the S3 v R. I struggle with the Golf interior though, especially the dash layout, just doesn't feel sporty.

I bet you a similar conversation goes on between golf GTI owners and Seat Cupra owners lol l saw a GTI Clubsport in white yesterday on a forecourt it looked stunning in white

Ha good point. There is a Clubsport on auto trader for just shy of £50k at the moment, owners are going to do well.

Just looking on the VW site again:

Red brake calipers free on the GTi, £325 on the S3.
Adaptive Cruise Control free on the GTi, £475 on the S3.
Virtual cockpit free on the GTi, £1,395 on the S3.
Tinted rear windows free on the GTi, £375 on the S3

So just those few things add up to = £2,570 extra on the S3, which would bump the PCP up by about £80 on top of the £30 extra for the options I'd already added = £110 per month! big difference for the same spec car.

After my recent dealings with Audi I may take a look at the GTi when it lands in the showroom!

Crazy isn't it, one has 20k on the clock and that's advertised for £45k. Collectors must be b v keen on them.

I'm surprised there's so much difference in cost. When I was looking for a new S3 I also looked at a golf R. The R was about £40-50 more a month due to its poor residuals. Even at the same monthly I'd take the S3 as I just can't get on with the interior.

Don't forget to add leather to the GTI that the S3 has as standard....! That would reduce the cost difference a bit as it's very expensive on the golf's. :)

My big problem with the Golf R, is there are loads of them about nowadays.
I honestly reckon I see more R models than any other.....certainly more popular round here than GTi/GtdGte.

Clubsport looks awesome and should be a far rarer sight on the road fully specced for less than £40k

Leathers on a GTI or R are around £2k extra. If you only want Virtual cockpit on an Audi S3, its a £450 option not £1395. £1395 is for Tech Pack Advanced which is the virtual cockpit, MMI Nav Plus, Audi Connect 36 month subscription, MMI Radio Plus and Audi Phone Box. Don't get mixed up with the GTI Clubsport 40 which you can get for £30k - £35k and the Clubsport S which is over £40k (and doesn't come with rear seats). They cost so much extra because they are limited edition, the MK6 GTI Edition 35 actually sells for more than the pre facelift MK7 GTI.

Just checked Performance golf pcps, they are gash and the interest rates are the exact same as the S3 Sportback, long term values are poor

To add my bit I too have purchased an M140i. Went for a nose after bad experience in audi dealership waiting around to be spoken to about an S3.......so went to BMW dealer for a look as the offers have been tempting. They had a cancelled order in the showroom in the colour I wanted with decent options. Bit of negotiating and got a little over £7k discount to bring payments to basic spec offer. Oh and got a very good part ex on my 13 yr old A3 too. Should of had it today but my passport expired 3 weeks ago so waiting for my photo id to come back as they won't release the car. Licence has been away as we moved last month.

There is no guarantee that BMW customer service will be any better than Audi's. My BMW experience new 2009 135i coupe was terrible. Got rid in early in late 2011 when I ordered a Scirocco.
