I was just wondering what others' experience is with the engine start button. Mine seems quite temperamental. A lot of the time it takes two presses before the engine will start. I know sometimes there's a slight delay before the engine starts up, however it's not that, it just doesn't start up with one press a lot of the time.

The dealer said they couldn't find this when I told them sometime last year. Starting to annoy me more lately.

I have noticed this lately a few times. Not sure if it's just me not pressing right?

Ah really, I think we must be pressing it right because the MMI, etc comes on, just not the engine - well that's the case with mine.

No difference with mine and I can't see how it would change thus time of year, it should improve now its getting warmer with a diesel engine as your not waiting for the glowplugs, unless its the transition from winter diesel to summer fuel?

To be honest it's always been this way, I wouldn't say it's gotten worse lately, it's just annoying me more lately, which I think is because I've been using a Golf GTD recently that never fails on the first press!

Thanks for the feedback! It helps knowing others are working fine, I'll just have to book it in, it's always had some sort of electrical fault since day one, most were fixed by software, others were 'not found' haha.

Are your brake lights working OK? Wonder if you have a temperamental brake pedal?

Same here. Needle sweep and VC come on

I have exactly the same issue so you're not alone.

Despite pressing the button in the same way each day, approx twice a week the engine doesn't start.

You're definitely not alone. Same happens to me. It is rather annoying I must admit.

Same with mine too. You can tell when it's waiting to warm the glow plugs as you get a little message on the dash telling you it's starting the engine, however several times a week it just sits there without firing up the engine.

Bit odd!

Same here, it has always been like it. Some days one press is good, others two presses are needed.

Same with mine. It's seems to be hit and miss whether it needs one press or two of the Start Button. It's the same when turning off, sometimes the brake comes on automatically and others it doesn't.

Yep, same here, seems random. More often than not it works first time, perhaps 1 in 5 it needs a second prod. Brake pedal firmly depressed, can't work out why this happens....

No issue in mine so far. 3rd A4 I have had with the start button and never had an issue.

Mine is petrol and s-tronic.

I've found that mine is temperamental when giving it a short push. Seems a quick prod doesn't always start the engine, a longer press and hold and it starts perfect

I detect a bit of a theme developing here...
No issues on mine after 6 months...Petrol and S-Tronic.

Mine does this, I just put it down to the fact I might be shifting in the seat just at the point it looks to see if there's anyone sat down.
And mines a smoker too :chargrined:

Usually this happens to me if the clutch pedal has came up ever so slightly before I've hit the start button.

same on mine. one press worked pretty much all the time. this week two presses. no idea why. not really a big issue :)

It does not check for someone in the seat before starting, as I frequently reach In and start the car on dewy / frosty mornings and it's always started first press for me. And yeah that includes slightly contorting myself to put foot on brake pedal too!

For those with this issue do you find it outside temperature related?

Mine does it quite often. Never really thought twice about it just though it could have been my fault lifting off the break slightly or something. Only happens when I start the car for the first time that day so could be outside temp related like s.line suggested...

Mine is a tfsi s tronic and always fires up instantly. I had a tdi loaner for a week in January during a very cold spell and in the mornings it was always press and hold on the starter button. I put it down to the glow plugs.

I had an issue with my B8 diesel not starting that was related to a brake pedal connection.

Assume if its a diesel its also waiting for glow plugs?

might be temp related. needed two presses today in the morning and just one in the evening :)

I get this... my current tactic is to hold the start button until the car says press brake pedal, press the pedal with the button still held down and away it goes. If I press the start button a second time the car just switches off :)
